Here’s an unexpected treat: newly-unearthed recordings (circa 2010) from Cleveland’s own MACHINE GO BOOM, “from the vaults” as they say, five blown-out bangers put to tape at Paul Mac’s Zombie Proof Studios (and you KNOW all the good stuff that came outta that joint), with Mikey Machine & Co taking one last swing for the fences just as the band was, as Mikey recalls, “running out of steam,” and with Zombie Proof itself closing up shop before these songs could get their finishing touches, they’d sit on a shelf for nigh fourteen years before Just Because Records caught wind of them and, well, there you have it: the tightest, most jam-packed 7” you’ll hear all year!
It's called Your Skin’s Been Peeling Off. “I was seeing that these songs all had this weird thing in common,” Mikey says, his fixation at the time on all things body horror, diving down internet rabbit holes on leprosy colonies and other grim histories. Fitting that this disc is coming out around Hallowe’en, yeah. . . . Put on that costume and relive the barbed whimsy that set your heart and limbs afire at MGB shows 20-some years ago. Mikey’s signature hybrid of Superchunk and DEVO still thrills, grisly satire cheerfully belted out over in-the-red drums & guitar and Carrie B’s keyboard bursts.
But what’s this? “Lost My Nerve” lightly sways to a piano riff worthy of a Great Pumpkin reboot. I lost my nerve a long time ago / I had a hard time letting it go . . .
Topping off the set is a tune written on the spot during that 2010 session, “Yes Katie, the Magic is Gone.” I sing this song ’cause that’s all gone. . . a delightful send-off (and kiss-off!) to this 7”, to the band itself, and yes, to Katie, wherever she may be . . .
Deadstock Machine Go Boom: bliss for the taking in the year 2023 . . .
