I always thought with all of Aspen's open space and wealth, the town should be one big outdoor sculpture park, right?

Aspen Rituals
Amidst the clinking of forks and knives the other night, suddenly the room emptied--as just about everyone jolted outdoors on the deck to watch the drama: the sky flaming orange, after a day of rain and clouds.

That’s a ritual at West End Social, the new restaurant at the Aspen Meadows, with some the best views in Aspen.

And some of the most sophisticated delicious dishes in town. Kudos to Chef Rachel Saxton who sources the best Colorado products and ingredients from local farmers and foragers, offering shareable plates of homemade potato chips and crispy shoe string fries to entrees of Colorado lamb…….

One of my favorite views ——from my recent family visit to Chicago. Looking out the window from what could be one of the best Club floors on the planet, at what is now one of my favorite hotels, the Langham. In a landmark riverfront location, the hotel occupies the ground through 13th floors of the I.B.M. Building, now AMA Plaza, the sleek, black 1973 skyscraper that was one of Mies van der Rohe’’s last projects. And the river walk was right outside my door, with lovely gardens, docks for boat cruises, and outdoor restaurants...

A tour de force...last week visited impressive retrospective celebrating in 100 images the enormous talent and career of American icon--pre-eminent fashion photographer and famous photographic portraitist--Richard Avedon--on the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Interesting to see which image was selected as a favorite by boldfaced names, from Elton John to Cindy Crawford to Spike Lee +. Many of the these notables invited to help curate the show – particularly those from the fashion world – ended up selecting images of themselves. Like Tom Ford, looking gregarious and confident (As did Hilary Clinton--a smiling portrait I had never see before)

Avedon created monumental--life-size or larger--prints, making for a bold encounter between viewer and art. He was also monumental for his range –from the powerful and famous to unknown everyday persons; from heads of state to celebrities to artists, musicians, writers, super models, and even a beekeeper.

I've seen shows over the years. But this range in one space was 💯 ....

I still love newsstands, a dying breed in New York City: imagine, there were once more than 1,500 sidewalk stands in the five boroughs of New York City during the 1950s, but only 300—or fewer— remain today. And the magazines on sale in this photograph? Gone...

If you love photography, and New York City-- or both--don't miss the Met's New York Album, selections from a one-of-a-kind unbound album of photographs of New York City, created by one of my artist heroes, American photographer Berenice Abbott (1898–1991). (Thru September 4)

Abbott captured New York in small, black-and-white images--with 266 on view-- a “kind of photographic sketchbook"

Fascinating too are photographs included in the exhibit from The Met collection of Paris streets by Eugène Atget, whose archive Abbott purchased and promoted; views of New York by her contemporaries Walker Evans and Margaret Bourke-White; and selections from Abbott’s grand documentary project, Changing New York (1935–39)

O’Keeffe wanted to paint nakedness: “I couldn’t get what I wanted any other way, so I’ve been painting myself —no clothes—It was lots of fun,” the artist wrote to Alfred Stieglitz in July 1917, about these watercolors where she is both artist and model--sort of a selfie....

The show provides a glimpse of the artist’s materials and compositional choices, while inviting the viewer to slow down and really look….

Yesterday afternoon at The New Museum, new exhibit of works by Wangechi Mutu, a Kenyan-born American multi -media artist...known for her otherworldly works combining mythical and folkloric narratives with sociohistorical nods, and leitmotifs like masked women and snake-like tendrils... complex collages that make the eye and mind travel...eye grabbing sculptures that intertwine human and animal, female and male... so much to see and think about in this exhibit ...

Great visit to Luma Westbau this morning. Did an interesting walk with artist Julien Creuzet through his new exhibition, opening tonight. The ideas were conceived during the artist's residency at Luma Arles (France).

The exhibit really engaged me--my mind, my senses--with how it combines sculpture, sound, filmmaking, language, poetry, mythology, movement and performance...inspired by Afro-Carribean and Creole influences---the artist wants you to experience a genuine encounter with his art...

In December Creuzet was selected to represent France at the 2024 Venice Art Biennale. Looking forward...

The term art brut — literally “raw art,” coined by the French artist Jean Dubuffet in the 1940s —refers to works by often isolated individuals who created their distinctive art primarily for themselves; persons usually on the margins of mainstream culture and society; persons who have experienced trauma, or been diagnosed with mental illness.... such pathos behind much of the imagery...such amazing stories... such amazing images....
