Muskellunge’s final release was chosen to be in the MN library system, meaning you can listen with your library card.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the public library system, I think it’s the most undervalued and stunningly gracious system in the US.

Anyways, yeh, big feelings and special thanks to Jeff Radford for his work with this, and for checking back a few times when I missed his messages.

Mysterious new song + video coming soon from Ice Palace !

This is the cover image for the new Ice Palace single, “There is this Mystery.” The photo is of Janelle and I on a trip to the Badlands in 1995(?). She put her old manual camera on a rock, turned on the timer, and we took an old-school selfie. It became one of our favorite photos. I bought the straw cowboy hat at Wall Drug. It was that kind of trip. Fun. Memorable. Buffalo. 1995. Broke, pre-internet, and no cell phone.

I contacted Jason Knox because I had a new idea that I would like to hear an Ice Palace song with a full string section. This had never been done before, and years ago I would’ve never thought I would want to hear one of my songs that way, but people change, and what I once would have thought sounded weird, now sounded interesting. Jason is in a project with Casey Virock called Carousel Swan, and I remembered liking the string sounds in their recordings so I reached out to Jason about working with me.

Cut to the chase - Jason ended up altering that Badlands photo I sent him and I immediately thought it was perfect as a cover to a single, took the basic tracks of Allison LaBonne and I singing the song Mystery and completely changed the tune, and then, also made a video for the song from footage we sent him.

This is a culmination of phone conversations, emails, and real no-contact creativity. Minneapolis, Michigan, and Portland. I know it would be cooler if Greece and Berlin were in this mix, but it’s still pretty damn cool that we made this all happen.

What happened?.........A song and a video that didn’t previously exist. The songs are like eggs that could’ve been stones. Every song is.

Play your guitars, your keyboards, your tambourines, or if you’re into that kind of thing, play the bongos naked like you’re Mathew McConaughey. Your old camera, your sketchpad, that old T.V. antenna could someday become a theremin…..all of it, art, and something to make something new. I think that’s my, and Ice Palace’s declaration to the world. It’s never over until you can’t do anything anymore. Until I’m in a hospital bed with the line a solid sine wave of nothing I’m going to make something.

This is a much bigger declaration than is what is needed for saying, “I contacted a guy and what came out of it was even better than I thought it might be.”

But,......that’s what’s magic about it.
