Matt Dibble Prelude & Fugue on B flat
On 14th July, Divine Art Recordings will release a very special album. It’s renowned pianist Freddy Kempf’s recording of our dearly beloved and much-missed friend Matt Dibble’s last composing project, his 24 Preludes and Fugues.
Here’s the video of one of those pieces here, recorded by Freddy in York last year, off Matt’s Prelude and Fugue on F sharp from the album.
JS Bach put the ‘Prelude and Fugue’ form on the map, but, unsurprisingly, Matt’s contributions to this part of the musical repertoire do not follow the rules imposed on 18th-century counterpoint.
Matt’s musical heroes were Wagner, Prince, Beck, the jazz trumpeters Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler. But ‘Prelude and Fugue’ seems to have been a place where Matt brought together and integrated various parts of his musical lexicon, in a way that he did not attempt elsewhere.
It’s an astonishing album, made all the more poignant – and bittersweet to hear – by the fact that Matt isn’t around to celebrate its release himself.
The album is out on 14th June and can be pre-saved here: listn.fm/mattdibble

Matt Dibble: Prelude on B-flat - Freddy Kempf
A short snippet from Friday's first track release from Freddy Kempf's new album of Matt Dibble's 24 Preludes and Fugues. Available for pre-order now: listn.fm/mattdibble
The album, out 14 June, is a very special collaboration between renowned pianist Freddy Kempf, and composer and multi-instrumental performer Matt Dibble. The two never met, due to Matt’s untimely death in 2021.
Matt was a prolific composer and virtuoso clarinettist, saxophonist, pianist and vocalist, working across genres and traditions ranging from classical, through jazz and free improvisation, to pop, klezmer and folk music. The music in this recording exhibits his learning in all these styles. It was one of Matt’s last wishes that Freddy would record this music.
This snipped from the fruits of that posthumous collaboration, the Prelude and Fugue on (not in - Matt was clear on that!) Bb.
Look out for this first track on Apple Music's #AppleClassical App and more this Friday.
Fantastic unboxing from composer Greg Caffrey of his new album, #Environments! Out everywhere this Friday!
Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the too-soon passing of composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist Matt Dibble. Next month, 14 June, we are honoured to release the recording of his final work: 24 Preludes and Fugues, performed by pianist Freddy Kempf.

From producer @jonhargreaves105:
Today marks three years since Matt Dibble passed - a true friend to many, and a ferocious musical talent.
Amazingly, he competed a six-year project - a full set of Preludes and Fugues - just weeks before he died. It brings some comfort to be announcing the release of the set, performed beautifully by @freddy_kempf on an amazing double album @divineartrecordingsgroup

EGUNGUN features premiere recordings of Aguirre’s ground-breaking percussion sextets, a singular body of work which conjures up the composer’s mystical-religious universe.
