Once upon a time, in the ancient land of Egypt, there lived a queen named Cleopatra, renowned through history for her beauty and intelligence. Yet, beneath her celebrated exterior lay a dark and ruthless ambition. Cleopatra's younger half-sister, Arsinoe, was a forgotten princess who might have become the reigning queen of Egypt had she not been caught in a deadly family feud.

Arsinoe’s claim to the throne was strong, and in a different world, Cleopatra’s name might have been lost to history. This shadowy chapter of Cleopatra's life vanished from memory until the 1920s when scientists unearthed a 2,000-year-old chamber in Ephesus, a vast Roman city in modern-day Turkey. There, they discovered the skeleton of a 16-year-old girl, believed to be Arsinoe. This young woman, of Greek and African descent, had been murdered for daring to challenge her powerful sister and Julius Caesar himself.

Cleopatra ascended the throne during a tumultuous time. Egypt, though ancient and storied, had long since passed its golden age. The royal family, including Cleopatra, traced their lineage back to Alexander the Great’s conquest. Cleopatra’s father, Ptolemy XII, left the throne to his eldest children, Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. The siblings had different mothers, further complicating the royal dynamics. Cleopatra’s mother was the deceased Queen Cleopatra V, while Arsinoe and Ptolemy XIII's mother was an unidentified Egyptian woman.

The royal siblings were divided not just by their mothers but by their stance on the looming Roman Empire. Cleopatra believed in allying with Rome and its leader, Julius Caesar. Her brother Ptolemy XIII, supported by Arsinoe, favored resisting Roman influence. This disagreement sparked a bitter and violent family feud.

Banished by her brother, Cleopatra sought Caesar's help. She knew her father had been a friend to Caesar, who had stipulated that Rome should mediate in succession disputes. Cleopatra famously smuggled herself into Caesar’s quarters, hidden in a bed sack. Her bold move captivated Caesar, and together they planned her return to power.

When Caesar arrived in Egypt in 48 BC, he intended to mediate. Instead, he was besieged in Alexandria, setting the stage for a dramatic conflict. Cleopatra's brother, incensed by her alliance with Caesar, led a revolt. Amidst the chaos, Cleopatra and Caesar took refuge in the palace. Caesar, desperate, set fire to the ships in Alexandria’s harbor, diverting the Egyptian forces.

In the ensuing battle, Cleopatra’s sister Arsinoe escaped and was declared queen by the Egyptian army. She led a fierce resistance against Caesar and Cleopatra, temporarily turning the tide. However, internal strife weakened her forces, and Caesar's reinforcements from Syria eventually crushed the rebellion. Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile, and Arsinoe was captured.

Cleopatra’s victory was complete, but Arsinoe’s fate was sealed. Brought to Rome as a captive, Arsinoe was paraded in Caesar’s triumph. The Roman crowd, moved by her youth, spared her life, but she was exiled to Ephesus. There, she lived in the sanctuary of the Temple of Artemis, believing herself safe.

Cleopatra, however, saw Arsinoe as a lingering threat. Her new ally, Mark Antony, needed Egypt's resources and Cleopatra’s influence. She persuaded him to have Arsinoe killed. One night, Antony's men dragged Arsinoe from the temple and murdered her on the steps, sending shockwaves through the Roman world.

Arsinoe’s death removed the last obstacle to Cleopatra’s rule, but it also marked the beginning of the end for the Ptolemaic dynasty. Cleopatra’s union with Caesar had produced a son, Caesarion, whose existence threatened Rome’s stability. After Caesar’s assassination, Cleopatra aligned with Antony, but their forces were defeated by Octavian, Caesar’s heir.

With Egypt under Roman control, Cleopatra took her own life, ensuring no rivals remained. Yet, her efforts to erase Arsinoe from history failed. The discovery of Arsinoe’s skeleton revealed the mixed heritage of the Ptolemaic line and hinted at a complex, multi-ethnic ancestry.

As we reflect on this tale of power, betrayal, and ambition, we ponder the what-ifs of history. What kind of world would it be if Arsinoe had triumphed over Cleopatra and Caesar? This story of Cleopatra and Arsinoe unveils a rich tapestry of alliances and rivalries that shaped one of history’s most legendary periods. So, who would you choose to rule ancient Egypt—Cleopatra or Arsinoe?
