This Saturday(August 10th), we’re having our 2 nd annual Chicago girls street portraits. Last year was a great time and we had a really beautiful turnout. We are teaming up again with , the talented , , and to take free portraits of Chicago girls ❤️.

We’ll be outside at 4248 S King Drive (right near the green line train) from 11:00 am- 2:00 pm, celebrating the 95th Bud Billiken Parade. We also partnered with our good friends over at @ for giveaways. Pull up, take a photo and you’ll be able to get a free airbrushed hat or tee. Love yall!

This Fall I am also teaching 201 Black sexuality studies. We will be watching and discussing the brilliant show P Valley babbbyy. In this class we’ll be exploring the liberatory possibilities of Black sexuality (and beyond). I hope to make proud. So excited for re re re re re reeeeee opening. Register y’all!

“We built this brick by brick!” It’s the process for meeee. Shoutout to the Candy Lady team. We did that! It’s something about the process of building together that makes the outcome so sacred, so much more profound. It’s those little acts of trust and showing up that strengthens the vision. The consistency to persist through adversity gives you insight to see that the devil be on dummy but can never out smart you. It’s the love from your mother that activates, comforts and carries. The sharing of creative brilliance, authentic partnership and care from the King of Chicago , that motivates, affirms, and remembers (the little details are even more significant). The initiative, zeal, sight and talent of .mouz to capture the beauty in my family, and the oh so beautiful: , .m29, , , . Anddd, not only did .m29 share her presence she shared her family’s labor in preparing for what they only had my word for. It’s a college that provides resources to experience the incredible .kayyyy creativity and witness their steadfast approaches for making things tangible. It’s a department chair and squad that shows up with more things, more love, more ideas, more insight, and more protection to just do you beyond yourself. And by extension it’s family that demonstrates how to build a solid large scale foundation that will hold all your ideas and make it easy to actualize your tributes. We all were the Candy Lady. And it was because of and love and commitment to Black girls we were able to share our first public engaged installation celebrating Black women’s contributions to the culture. I’m still in the clouds. So just know it’s up and beyond anything we ever thought we already knew.

We give The Candy her flowers. She’s the unsung hero whose spot on the Mount Rushmore of neighborhood legends should be reserved. For she’s the one who showed us that with some imagination and curation, one could transform a home into a mini makeshift storefront. The Candy Lady sold drinks, chips, cookies, nachos & cheese, frooties, chews, and sour pickles while also providing a space for kids to be kids, liberated and independent as they purchased sweet selections (our Toys R Us without toys!). She’s the entrepreneurial spirit who depending on the time of day was a mother, camp counselor, math teacher, peacemaker, and community leader.

A day of fun on a typical summer afternoon wasn’t complete without a visit to the Candy Lady. Those visits introduced us to unforgettable memories that still bring smiles to our faces whenever we look back to move forward. For us, the Candy Lady’s house served as both a place of business and fun and very instrumental in strenghting the bonds of friendships, brotherhoods, and sisterhoods. We pay tribute to the Candy Lady as a symbol of inspiration and commitment to service and development of our Black youth. We are deeply grateful for Candy Ladies who gifted us with their presence and hearts.

New directions.

Meet Dr. Sheri Lewis, another new Assistant Professor in our Department. As some of you may know, she is currently teaching AAAS 200 (Black Feminisms: past, present, and future).

“AAAS activates and excites me.” “It’s clear and intentional, with care as a priority…It’s REAL,” she says. “We’re not just faces.”

Dr. Lewis has been a Black Girlhood scholar and advocate for some time now. That is to say, she’s not new to this, but true to this. 😎

She is currently working on her MELT magazine () and has helped organize , which is dedicated to celebrating young Black girls in all their essence.

“Keep going.” Sheri is inspired by her students. Moreover, she finds motivation in her lively and communal hometown (Chicago) where she carries its culture into her research and teaching style.

Dr. Lewis has an open-door policy and has created a safe space for students to work in her office. She says, “I’m always here, just pull up on me” (North Kedzie Rm 213A)”
