Policy and Procedures Statement
The purpose of the Sidney M. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship Competition is to promote and reward excellence in instrumental and vocal collaboration by students at The University of Texas at Austin. In doing so, the interests and accomplishments of the late UT alumnus Sidney M. Wright, benefactor of this Endowed Presidential Scholarship, will be honored in perpetuity. The Sidney M. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship, determined through an Accompanying Competition, shall be independent of all other financial awards, and is not subject to any other restrictions than those stated in this document. Therefore, the awarding of this Scholarship shall not prejudice the awarding of any other scholarships, fellowships, teaching assistantships, waivers and the like. Requirements associated with other scholarships shall not apply to the winner or winners of the Sidney M. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship. Scholarship recipients shall be determined by a yearly Competition at The University of Texas at Austin, held during the school year. This special Scholarship Competition should be advertised as a recruitment incentive to prospective students interested in collaborative work. However, due to the specialized nature of a competition involving collaborators and extensive rehearsal, it is determined that the Scholarship Competition is intended for students who are already in residence at The University of Texas. This applies to the pianists and their vocal and instrumental partners. The Advisory Board shall choose three judges for the final round, and one judge for a preliminary round, should that round be necessary. The Advisory Board requires that all contestants refrain from coaching any of the competition material with any of the judges. Every attempt will be made to select judges who have no direct contact with any UT students studying piano performance, vocal or instrumental collaboration. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship recipient of $3000. Other awards and honorable mentions may be awarded. Should the Winner of the Competition, for any reason, not be able to accept either semester's portion of the Endowed Scholarship, the money will be awarded to the next person in line as determined by the judges. Should the Endowed Scholarship be relinquished by the winner(s) for any reason, that decision must be permanent, and the money cannot be held in "escrow" for a subsequent time. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship Competition Winner or Winners (first or second prize) may not enter the Competition again. The Competition entrants must be taking courses and making normal progress toward a degree in music at The University of Texas at Austin at the time of the Competition and the following semester in order to qualify for the Scholarships offered by the Competition. For the purposes of the Sidney M. Wright Endowed Presidential Scholarship Competition, the minimum numbers of hours required for enrollment as a condition of "residence" will be 9 hours for undergraduate students and 6 hours for graduate students. If a student is getting other financial aid, he or she will have to abide by appropriate course-load requirements. All Competition entrants and collaborators must be prepared to show proof of their academic status to the Scholarship Competition Administrator prior to the Competition. The Winners will be expected to follow the stated academic status guidelines of the Competition in order for the Scholarships to be issued. The winners of scholarships awarded through the Sidney Wright Presidential Scholarship Competition will not need to fulfill an imposed ensemble requirement beyond his or her normal degree requirement (School of Music Student Awards Committee Scholarships carry their own requirements). A copy of this document will be posted outside the studio of the Scholarship Competition Administrator and will be provided to each applicant and each judge. This document will also be provided to the Office of the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, the Director of the School of Music, and the Chairman of the Student Awards Committee of the School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin.
