Our Story

In 2018, a group of Georgetown University seniors created The Blaxa. The Blaxa is an online news outlet for people of color on Georgetown’s campus to express their perspectives and narratives. Our primary goal is to not only inform people of what’s going on in our communities, but keep them up to date with the latest events and cultural happenings. We invite all to read our stories and view our work.

Since the admission of the first Black undergraduate student in 1950, Georgetown’s Black student population has grown to 7 percent of the student body. While this growth indicates a departure from Georgetown’s homogenous beginnings, Georgetown is still not an affirming space for Black students. Once enrolled at Georgetown, Black students face the realities of existing on a campus that is 56 percent white. Navigating spaces not built with your needs in mind is a challenge that every Black Georgetown student faces.

We have been forced to continuously carve out spaces for personal healing, exploration, growth, acceptance, community, and love. However, as is typical with this type of work, creating life-affirming spaces within white institutions is never and will never be done until every student feels their voice is adequately and equally represented. As such we, a collective of Black Georgetown students, have gathered to create a new Black newspaper at Georgetown University.
