The 4th of July was just a start for Baldwin City! The celebrations have only begun! Today we stopped in to Baldwin City Made to pick up our wardrobe for tomorrow! They have a fun variety of shirts & bandanas for the whole family! Stop in before 4pm today OR visit their booth near the Kid's Zone at the event tomorrow!

The super anticipated Baldwin City's Independence Day Celebration 2024 is TOMORROW! The Baldwin City Recreation Commission is currently busting their butts to set up this spectacular event! Pack up the whole family and head down to the Baldwin City Golf Course, starting at 4:30pm! There will be locals vendors, food trucks, music, bounce houses, cool drinks and FIREWORKS!!!

Meet Marta Jardon, Writer & Historian

What do you do for The Maple + Weekly?
"I write monthly articles about local history. Preserving and sharing local history is very important to me, and I spend a lot of time doing it. I volunteer in The Kansas Room at the Baldwin City Public Library which contains a lot of information about local history. It is a great place to check out items and learn about Baldwin, the surrounding area, and research genealogy.

Tell us about you and what you want the community to know.
I am a member of the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society of Douglas County which is located here in Baldwin. Our group preserves, protects and shares the history of Southern Douglas County and the Santa Fe Trail through the county. I manage the group's website which contains historical information - check it out at www.santafetraildouglas.org!

I am also one of the coordinators of the new "Our Local History" Series which is a joint program between the library and the historical society bringing information about the past to the public.

Baldwin is such a fabulous place to live! I enjoy seeing so many friends around town and meeting new people."

What is your favorite thing about writing for The Maple + Weekly?

"Hearing people's comments about the articles I have written. The "long-time Baldwinites" appreciate that the history is being passed along. The "newer to town" folks are so interested in hearing what happened in the past. Both groups are glad the information is being preserved. I am so thankful that The Maple + Weekly allows me to share these stories - and challenges me to keep looking into the history of our area."

Did you know?

As the foundation for Baker University began in Palmyra, the townsite would be quickly named “Baldwin City” after John Baldwin, who was a main benefactor to the university. One legend says the town was named after Baldwin as a bribe for more money for the building of a school and also as a thank you for all of the money he gave to establishing Baker University.

John Baldwin also has a college bearing his name in Berea, Ohio, where he was originally from. A charter for Baker University said it was to be built in Baldwin City, not Palmyra. Baldwin City was then established and for a short time coexisted with Palmyra before eventually absorbing the small townsite.
