Let's clear this up: HR are employees, not robots. 🤖 ❌

They don't have a magic button for every problem. They don't have all the answers instantly. And they definitely don't switch off their humanity when they walk through the office door.

They are colleagues who:
➡️Juggle multiple conflicting priorities.
➡️Have to deliver difficult news.
➡️Advocate for staff while balancing business needs.
➡️Get overwhelmed, stressed, and need support, too.

Let's treat them with the same respect and patience we expect for ourselves. They are partners in building a better workplace, for everyone.

It's easy to get caught in the cycle of what's next: the next promotion, the next big project, the next role. But today, I'm pausing to appreciate the one I have now.

I'm grateful for the challenges that push me to grow, the colleagues who collaborate and inspire, and the stability that allows me to build a life.

With so much talent in the market, I'm reminded that the opportunity I have today is one that many skilled and passionate professionals are striving for. It's a privilege to be here.

This isn't about settling; it's about appreciating the foundation you're building on. A little gratitude can fuel the journey ahead.

What are you grateful for in your current role?

Understanding Family Responsibility Leave in Zambia

📢 Did You Know? Under Zambian labour law, employees are entitled to Family Responsibility Leave to attend to critical family matters. Here’s what you need to know:

✅ Eligibility: Employees who have worked for at least 6 months with the same employer are entitled to 5 working days of paid family responsibility leave per year.

✅ Permissible Reasons:
- Serious illness of an immediate family member (spouse, child, parent, or sibling).
- Death of an immediate family member (additional bereavement leave may apply).
- Other urgent family matters requiring the employee’s presence.

✅ Documentation: Employers may request reasonable proof (e.g., medical certificate or death notice) depending on the situation.

✅ Unused Leave: Family responsibility leave is not cumulative—if unused, it does not carry over to the next year.

🔍 Why This Matters:
- Supports work-life balance and employee well-being.
- Ensures compliance with the Employment Code Act No. 3 of 2019 (Zambia).
- Fosters a compassionate workplace culture.

💡 For Employers: Review your leave policies to ensure alignment with Zambian labour laws.
💡 For Employees: Know your rights and communicate with HR when the need arises.

Let's Talk About Termination vs. Dismissal: What's the Difference?
Understanding employment terms is super important for everyone—whether you're hiring or being hired. Two terms that often get mixed up are Termination and Dismissal. Though they both signal the end of a job, they have different meanings and implications. Let’s break it down!
🔹 Termination
Termination is a neutral term that simply means an employment contract has ended. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
✔ When both the employer and employee agree to part ways
✔ If the role is no longer needed (redundancy)
✔ At the end of a fixed-term contract
✔ When an employee decides to leave (resignation)
It's important to note that termination isn’t always a bad thing—it can be a natural step in one’s career journey.
🔹 Dismissal
On the other hand, dismissal carries a more negative connotation. It usually occurs for reasons like:
❌ Consistently poor performance, even after warnings
❌ Misconduct that goes against company policy
❌ Serious issues (gross misconduct), like theft or harassment, which can lead to immediate termination
Dismissals often come after a formal disciplinary process, and they can affect your future job opportunities.
Key Takeaway:
Not every termination is a dismissal! Termination is the broader term, while dismissal specifically refers to a negative termination.
📌 For Employers: It's crucial to follow fair processes to protect yourself legally.
📌 For Employees: Know your rights—if you believe you’ve been unfairly dismissed, you have options to contest it.
Have you ever felt confused by these terms? We’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts! Let’s chat in the comments below! 👇
