I remember talking to my 10-year-old self and holding her hand and saying, “I’m here for you. I got you. You’re safe with me.”

I think she was afraid, diminished. And there was this…this inner light that really wanted to shine and never really had the permission to, except…when I was competing.

I think now she’s just like this bright little hopeful, curious being who just wants to shine her light.”

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sense-of-self/id1742905024

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share the first episode of Sense of Self with you all. In this episode, we have the privilege of featuring the incredible journey of Akemi Look, an actor, producer, and writer based in Los Angeles.

Akemi is of Japanese and Chinese descent and an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse. She is a former member of the USA National Team in Rhythmic Gymnastics. Akemi’s story is one of resilience, healing, and self-discovery, and here are some takeaways from our conversation:

Finding Your Voice: Akemi shared how she discovered her voice during a press conference, expressing deep grief and rage. This moment was transformative, but it was also followed by a tragic accident that silenced her physically.

Healing and Self-Reflection: Akemi’s journey of healing involved facing her past traumas, including childhood sexual abuse. Through therapy, self-reflection, and intentional healing practices, she was able to process her pain and reclaim her sense of self-worth. This highlights the importance of taking the time to heal and prioritize our mental and emotional well-being.

Support and Resilience: Throughout her journey, Akemi found support from close friends, her husband, and even her family, who eventually came around to understanding and supporting her. This underscores the importance of having a strong support system and the resilience to keep moving forward, even in the face of challenges.

I hope you tune in to this episode to hear Akemi’s inspiring story and gain valuable insights into the power of healing, self-discovery, and resilience. You can listen to the full episode on our website.

Get to know our host!

Dr. Gowri Aragam is a rising voice in the field of psychiatry, dedicated to exploring the intersection of identity, self-narrative, and mental well-being. As a young Indian-American woman, a psychiatrist, and a new mother she understands the complexities of navigating multiple worlds and the profound impact this can have on one's sense of self.

Growing up, Dr. Aragam witnessed firsthand the harsh limitations and judgments imposed on South Asian women by the men around them and it ignited a passion within her to uplift and empower women through compassionate, culturally attuned mental health care.
As co-founder of the Stanford Brainstorm Lab for Mental Health Innovation, the world's first academic lab dedicated to collaborative mental health tech innovation, Dr. Aragam was at the forefront of developing person-centered digital solutions. Her team worked closely with companies like Pinterest to create the "compassionate search" feature, providing anxiety, depression, and self-harm resources to users in 23 countries.

Dr. Aragam's mission extends beyond innovation—she strives to make every patient and person feel truly seen and understood. Whether in her clinical work, tech collaborations, or emerging media ventures, she remains dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and shattering stigmas that have long silenced people, especially women of color.

Currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF, Dr. Aragam brings her empathetic, trailblazing spirit to the Women's Health Center and Primary Care. Her unique background, honed through a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at UCSF and residency at Mass General Hospital/McLean, allows her to provide holistic, innovative care that honors each woman's lived experience.
In her latest venture, Dr. Aragam invites listeners to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery, validation, and empowerment. Her aspiration is that "Sense of Self" becomes a catalyst for individual and community change and encourages people to embrace their authentic selves unapologetically.
