If you could’ve been a fly on the wall 90 years ago tonight, you would’ve witnessed the start of Ella Fitzgerald’s amazing career. The jazz singer from Newport News wowed audiences, winning the amateur night contest at Harlem's Apollo Theater in 1934.

At just 17 years old, the competition launched Fitzgerald into stardom. Just five years later, Fitzgerald recorded “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” which sold 1 million copies, hit number one, and stayed on the pop charts for 17 weeks. The recording skyrocketed her career, and she ultimately produced more than 200 albums.

Did you stay up to watch the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight? Well, you might be curious to know more about Kid Norfolk—a boxer from Virginia.

Born in Belmont in 1893, William Ward (who went by “Kid Norfolk”) became one of the best heavyweights in the sport. He rose to fame in the 1910s, and in 1920, uttered one of the best lines in boxing history. Norfolk went up against John Lester Johnson, an opponent previously disqualified for “foul tactics” against the Virginian.

Before the match started Johnson said, "Hello, Willie." Norfolk responded: "Hey, man. You don't mean, 'Hello.' You mean, 'Goodbye.'" Norfolk knocked Johnson out in the first round, according to a story in the September 2000 issue of Boxing Digest.

In 1998, Rita Hester was murdered in Allston—a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Soon after, a candlelight vigil was held, with hundreds of people from the area attending.

Rita was two days from turning 35 years old when she was killed. She was part of the local rock and roll scene, had a cat, and loved to cook. Her killer was never found.

A year later, motivated by newspaper reporting that misrepresented Rita's gender and life, a small group of concerned people started the Transgender Day of Remembrance—which has continued to be recognized annually on Nov. 20 to honor the memory of trans people who lost their lives due to anti-trans bigotry and violence.

Research shows that trans people are significantly more at risk to face violence; this year, more than 350 transgender people globally have been killed due to transphobia.

WOW—that’s the only word that seems appropriate for the NCAA women’s basketball game last week between the Virginia Cavaliers and the Radford Highlanders. The Cavaliers pulled out the win, with more than double the points over the Highlanders (83-41).

Sophomore guard Kymora Johnson scored the most points in the game, securing 17 for the Cavaliers. It was a full-circle moment, as Johnson hails from Charlottesville, where the University of Virginia team is located. Prior to college, Johnson attended St. Anne's-Belfield, a private boarding day school in Charlottesville.
