REISSUE OF THE WEEK: Windy & Carl - ‘Consciousness’

One of the best from the Michigan ambient duo returns to vinyl for the first time since 2001.

Reissued for the first time, we’ve revisited ‘Consciousness’ from our previous Album of the Year winners (for 2012’s ‘We Will Always Be’). Loaded with relaxed instrumentals made up of billowing guitar chords and layers of drones, the group’s fifth LP balances subtle tracks with more immediate psychedelic numbers.

There are some real gems in here, particularly the near-thirteen-minute title track, and the genius ‘Balance (Trembling)’ where they manage to mimic the sounds of rotating helicopter blades.

REISSUE OF THE WEEK: Roy Montgomery - ‘Temple IV’

Kranky bring Roy Montgomery’s cult classic work to vinyl for the first time, complete with two bonus tracks.

Often considered as the musician’s masterpiece, ‘Temple IV’ is a gentle, minimalist, near-ambient work of psychedelia and post-rock. Loaded with spacious atmosphere and heavy repetition, we hear mantra-like refrains built on budget guitars steadily ascend with subtle elements.

Michael Jones and Turk Dietrich make a welcome return as Belong.

Thirteen years after their low-key classic ‘Common Era’, Belong are back with their third LP.

‘Realistic IX’ hears heavily effects-laden guitars melt together into a haze of shoegaze textured bliss, complete with submerged vocals all working harmoniously. There’s a wonderful decayed quality on display- as though your favourite dream-pop record had been left outside for years, getting sun bleached and warped by the elements.

Like the firm shop favourites ‘October Language’ and ‘Common Era’, we can see ourselves getting lost in this for years to come. The LP and CD drops this August via Kranky, and their brand-new single ‘Souvenir’ is streaming now.

Windy & Carl's 2001 work is returning to vinyl for the first time since it was initially released.

We’re big fans of W&C here, evidenced in us naming their ‘We Will Always Be’ as our Album of the Year in 2012. 'Consciousness' is a subtle, slow-burning ambient work with occasional glimpses of space rock psychedelia and contrasting shades of light, airy pop tones and looping dark drones. It features career-best material, notably the sun-dappled, gorgeous, near-thirteen minute title track, and the strange yet addictive ‘Balance (Trembling)’ which seems to mirror the choppy sounds of a revolving helicopter blade.
