The Polouse Goat Guild will again host the Goat Academy. This is the 9th annual Academy, so they've got it down and running pretty smooth. I'm adding another class schedule as they've added a class and deleted one. This is probably the most comprehensive, hands on educational opportunity you'll see in our area. There are 6 veterinarian instructors included in the educators. This year the all day Academy will be followed by an all meat breeds, breedstock sale. This is a pretty unique offering and shouldn't be missed. If you want to see some side by side comparisons, here's the opportunity of a lifetime! Boer, Kiko, Myotonic, Spanish, Savannah, all in the same barn. If you want to sign up for the sale, go to their web site and fill out the consignment papers. Get them in. Pay on paypal if you'd like, and just email them the receipt to show you paid. Make it a full day and go to the Academy then return home with some new breedstock. If you're interested in selling, get your consignment forms in soon as space is limited. The animals will be housed in the barns all day during the Academy, allowing people to swing by and look at the goats, talk with owners, and get registered for the sale. Latah county fairgrounds, Moscow, ID. May 18th.

There's an excellent article written by Susan Kerr, once our extension agent and a great resource for information. Susan is also a vet so her answers can be remarkably accurate. The article is called "How to Starve Animals with a Full Stomach".

Western Small Farmer

When I first started this page I intended it to be a contact place for a magazine publication. Now, I’ve decided to make it a mentor site while I re-examine the idea of another magazine. I’ve been involved with small farming for many years now and I see a lot of people just starting out. This can be a confusing and challenging time in any small farmers life, and making the right decisions can influence your farm for years to come. I’d like to make sure that people have the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback from someone who’s already made every mistake possible. Have a small farm question? Ask away. If I don’t know the answer I can usually introduce you to someone who does. That said, most of my expertise is raising goats and fowl. I have a lot of training and research in farm management, advertising, promotion, event planning, and presentations. Hope you find something you like.
