Central Texas has lots of baby critters leaving the nest right about now. Depending on where you live, there may be bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, red and gray foxes, birds and owls, rats, tree, ground, and rock squirrels, deer, feral hogs, opossums, raccoons, ringtails, rabbits, feral cats, nutria, armadillos, snakes, skunks and badgers, turtles, and bats. What do you do now? Your instinct may be to help. But, what is the right way to handle them and when could your actions be dangerous to the baby or you?
NEVER, never, never give food or water to baby wildlife you find. Baby critters require a special diet to develop properly. You should absolutely consider making fresh water available for healthy animals during hot summer months. Just don’t try to force them to drink. They could choke and die.
