How to make a Maca Smoothie

Maca has a long history of use as a nourishing food. It is one of the few edible crops that thrive at high elevation in the Andes. The tuber is rich in protein, fiber, essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins (B2, C and niacin), and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, selenium, and boron). The fresh hypocotyls (the radish like root) are sometimes pit cooked. Usually they are broiled and mashed and then added to milk to make a nourishing porridge. In addition, the powdered root is used as a flour for breads or cakes. It is also fermented to make a low-alcohol beverage known as chichi de maca.

Maca Smoothie

1 frozen banana
8 ounces milk or nut/grain milk (almond, cashew, soy, coconut or oat)
1-2 teaspoons maca powder (you can also replace this with ashwagandha or shatavari powder)
1-3 dried dates (chopped and frozen) or 2 teaspoons lucuma powder
1/4-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ounces nut butter (cashew, almond, sunflower, or peanut)

Put all ingredients except the nut butter in a blender; blend until smooth. Add the nut butter and blend until fully incorporated.

The answer to this week's Herbal Trivia question is Oak Bark (Quercus spp.). "One of our strongest vegetable astringents is derived from the bark of this common deciduous tree."

Oak bark is one of the strongest vegetable astringents (it contains 15-20% tannins) and is best used topically for
capillary bleeding, hemorrhoids, bruises, nosebleeds (epistaxis) - as a nasal do**he, oozing ulcers, and for periodontal disease and aphthous stomatitis (as a mouthwash).

It can be used as a sitz bath for episiotomies, re**al fissures, or hemorrhoids. Use it with Calendula flowers and Lavender essential oil.

It can be used acutely for internal conditions such as diarrhea, dysentery (combine it with carminatives such as Ginger, Cardamom, or Cinnamon), or gastric bleeding (use it with Tienqi, Yarrow and Plantain leaf/root). In animal studies, Oak Bark extract significantly reduced gastric bleeding and ethanol-induced stomach lesions.
