🎱📈CNZ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS STATS REVIEW 🎱📈

With the results from this year’s CNZ National Championships being an exact replica of what we witnessed in Invercargill at the CNZ South Islands earlier this year, it would be easy to simply copy and paste what I wrote back in June. However, that would simply not do justice to what we’re currently witnessing in New Zealand 8 Ball Pool at the moment...

👬 PAIRS👬

Adam Lilley’s victory in the National Pairs sees him moving up to equal 8th overall with his 7th CNZ title. Adam has also joined an elite group of players to have won 3 CNZ titles in the same calendar year which includes Phyl Wilkinson, Simon Singleton, Matt McInnes and Mitch Ingram. Phyl remains the only player to have won 4 in a year.

As we’ve previously discussed, with Adam still being in his mid-twenties, he is by far the youngest player in the Top 20. When you consider that Phyl didn’t win his first CNZ title until the age of 31 and Simon the age of 33, it’s scary to think how many Adam could win in his career. All the talk during the next couple of years will no doubt centre around WHEN Simon will catch and beat Phyl’s 19 CNZ titles and obtain the GOAT title, but it’s arguably Adam who has the best chance of setting the all-time record CNZ title haul. With both Adam and Simon competing in both the North and South Islands, no doubt they would have been delighted that the remit to prevent players competing in both Island events failed to pass at the AGM.

Speaking of remits, Adam’s playing partner and regular shark rack user, Bret De Faria, would have been disappointed at the decision to ban shark racks from future CNZ tournaments. Interestingly the vote count was a dead heat twice, before a recount saw the ban enforced by just two votes. With such a close vote I would expect to see the shark rack debate resurface and voted upon at a future AGM. On the flip side though, Bret spoke passionately about switching the Pairs format to scotch which was then subsequently voted in favor of. Interestingly, the last time scotch was used at a CNZ Nationals was at New Plymouth in 2013, when Bret won the title with his brother, Thomas De Faria.

Bret moves up to 14th overall with his 6th CNZ title. Bret remains only the 2nd player in the top 20 whose titles have all come from Pairs, the other being Graham Cole.

Bret continues to fly the silver fern as the only New Zealand-born player to have a won an Open CNZ title since Dan Bowen won the Singles at the 2022 South Islands. Aside from Bret every other Open CNZ title has been won by English-born players (Simon Singleton, Adam Lilley, Steve Denton & Bayden Jackson).

Adam and Bret have become only the fourth pairing to have won multiple CNZ National Pairs titles, although they have some way to go to match the 5 National Pairs titles collected by Phyl Wilkinson and Matt McInnes.

Adam and Bret have become the first pairing to have won back-to-back Island and Nationals Pairs, with victory in both the 2023 and 2024 editions of those tournaments. Phyl Wilkinson achieved a similar feat across 2012 and 2014 (partnered with both Matt McInnes and Chris Morgan), but did not do so in consecutive years.

In what is surely the longest unbeaten run in major CNZ Pairs history, the last time Adam and Bret were beaten in a major CNZ Pairs event was the quarter finals of the 2022 CNZ National Pairs against Ite Talosaga and George Brooking.

Whilst Simon and Bayden will highly likely overtake Phyl and Matty’s record of 6 CNZ Pair’s titles in the foreseeable future, Adam & Bret are only one title behind so expect to witness a fascinating battle to become the CNZ Pairs GOATs during the next few years.

🧍‍♂️SINGLES🧍‍♂️

CNZ title number 13 for The Postman sees Simon Singleton move to within 6 titles overall of Phyl Wilkinson. In the past two years Simon has won a staggering 6 CNZ titles, matching the record 6 that Phyl won across 2014 and 2015.

Simon has also joined an exclusive group of just 9 players that have won multiple CNZ National Singles Championships.

As Simon himself discussed on his own Facebook post, we have now reached an incredible level of consistency at the top with Simon and Adam between them having won all 6 Open CNZ titles this year.

From a quantitative perspective we have now reached a period of dominance similar to Des Blair circa 1995 – 2005 and Phyl Wilkinson circa 2005 – 2015. From a qualitative perspective, in my opinion, through a combination of pitting themselves against the best in Australia during the Pockets Pro Series, as well as taking on the world’s best at the World Championships, Adam and Simon have taken the quality of New Zealand pool to a level we have not yet witnessed before. If they’re on opposite sides of the draw there’s a good chance that they will both reach the final. Considering that Adam also won the National Snooker title as well this year gives you an idea as to how talented are current top 8 Ball cueists are.

UPDATED CNZ WOMEN’S AND MASTER’S TITLE RANKING LISTS 🎱🏆

WOMEN’S 👩

Jojo Coleman and Camelia Cook are the biggest risers in the Women’s title rankings this year, with Jojo moving into outright 6th place after taking home two CNZ titles this year, and Camelia moving into equal 7th place after winning three titles.

Camelia becomes only the third woman to have won 3 CNZ titles in a calendar year, the first being Aileen Barnes in both 1995 and 1996, as well as Keri Low in 2005.

Jojo and Camelia’s defence of the Women’s National Pairs title that they also won in 2023 follows on from Jojo’s back-to-back victories in 2019 and 2021 (there was no event in 2020 due to COVID) that she won in partnership with Zarrie Wood.

Jojo is now up to 4th overall for Women’s National Pairs titles after winning her fourth, and Camelia is up to 3rd overall after winning her fifth. The GOATS of Women’s National Pair’s titles remain Sharon Wikaira King and Rita Toamau-Rangiuia who have won the event six times together.

Camelia becomes the 11th woman to have won multiple National Singles title following on from her National Singles in 2022. Denise Wilkinson remains the National Singles GOAT having won the event six times previously.

MASTERS 🧓

Brent Wells becomes only the 15th player to have won multiple titles at the Masters with victory in the Pairs and was just won match away from winning a third in the Singles.

Brent’s partner in the Pairs, Craig Steinmetz, and his opponent in the Singles, George Elvin, are both first time Masters title holders.

CNZ SOUTH ISLANDS REVIEW 🏔️

Similarly to last week’s North Islands, the South Island results have also had a significant impact upon the CNZ title rankings. Let’s get down to business...

LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN ⚡

Following up on his fantastic North Island Singles victory, Adam Lilley’s victory in the South Island Pairs sees him move up to equal 13th overall alongside the late great Stan Maffey, with his 6th CNZ title.

His partner, Bret De Faria, is a new entry into the top 20 with his 5th CNZ title. Bret is only the 2nd player in the top 20 whose titles have all come from Pairs, the other being Graham Cole.

Bret remains the only New Zealand-born player to have a won an Open CNZ title since Dan Bowen won the Singles at the 2022 South Islands. Aside from Bret, every other Open CNZ title has been won by an English-born player.

Adam and Bret have become only the 2nd pairing to defend a South Island Pairs title. Paul Bartlett and Stan Maffey have previously achieved that feat twice, in 1993 & 1994 as well as 1996 & 1997.

SIMON SAYS 🫡

Simon Singleton’s hill-hill victory over Ryan King, following on from last year’s hill-hill win against Brendan Ng, deserves to be remembered as one of the all-time great CNZ finals. Ryan, who was arguably the most improved player of 2023 after his victory in the Pockets Challenger Series as well as the Superleague North Islands, really didn’t do anything wrong in an extremely high-quality match and will no doubt secure his maiden CNZ title shortly.

But to the victor belong the spoils, and Simon’s 12th CNZ title means he moves one ahead of Des Blair into outright 2nd place overall and is now only 7 titles behind Phyl Wilkinson.

Simon becomes only the 3rd player to have defended their South Island Singles titles after Glen Coutts in 1999 & 2000, as well as Adam Marlow who won three years in a row between 2010 & 2012.

📈 CNZ TITLE RANKINGS UPDATE
This year’s CNZ North Island Championships have had a major impact upon the overall CNZ title rankings, so let’s delve into the results in more detail!

📮 THE POSTMAN KEEPS ON DELIVERING
After his Pairs win, Simon Singleton has now won his 11th CNZ title, taking him up to joint 2nd with the 4-time National Champion, Des Blair. Simon now sits only 8 titles behind the GOAT, Phyl Wilkinson. Can Phyl hold onto the GOAT title or will Simon surpass what previously seemed an unsurpassable total of 19 titles? At Simon’s current rate, I’m going predict that Simon catches Phyl by 2027.

Simon’s shock first 4-0 round loss in the Singles to Deon Rawlings would have no doubt brought back memories/nightmares of his loss to Greg Inglis in the first round of the 2019 CNZ National Singles.

🎯 SHOTMAKING
Simon’s pairs partner, Bayden Jackson, moves up to 8th overall with his 7th CNZ title.

Incredibly Simon and Bayden have now won the North Island Pairs for the past three years that they have competed together, with wins in 2021, 2023 and 2024 (Simon and Bayden did not compete together in 2022 with Simon overseas for the World Cup of Pool). The record for consecutive years of North Island Pairs titles belongs to John Humphries and Ray Sayed who won it in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Bayden and Simon are now just one CNZ Pairs title behind the GOAT partnership of Matt McInnes and Phyl Wilkinson. Can Bayden and Simon draw level at the CNZ Nationals in October?

⚡ LIGHTNING KEEPS STRIKING
Adam Lilley’s victory in the Singles sees him move into the Top 20 overall, at 14th equal.

At the age of just 25, Adam is by far the youngest player in the Top 20 (Simon Singleton is the next youngest at aged 41) and Adam probably still hasn’t peaked as a player yet. For context, Phyl Wilkinson didn’t win his first CNZ title until the age of 31 and Simon the age of 33, so Adam has a great head start on both of those.

Adam has also joined an elite group of just three other players that have won both the North and South Island Singles, alongside Brent Wells, Des Blair and Simon Singleton. Similarly, he has also joined an elite group of just two other players who have won both Island Singles and the National Singles, alongside Des Blair and Simon Singleton.

⭐ A STAR IS BORN
We must also mention the runner-up to Adam Lilley in the Singles, 15-year-old Riley James from Waikanae! An incredible accomplishment from someone so young who has only recently started entering pool tournaments, having previously focused more on snooker.

In the past few months Riley has made it to five finals, including the Levin Easter Classic where he lost to Bret De Faria, as well as the Fielding Open where he defeated Brent Wells. Expect to see Riley start collecting CNZ titles for fun in the next few years!

🫖 BLOODY POMS
Whilst the dominance from our English-born players has been clearly evident in Superleague since its inception 10 years ago, that dominance has now really come to the fore in CNZ as well. During the past five CNZ Open tournaments (so out of a potential 15 title holders) Bret De Faria is the only non-English-born player to have taken home a title. All of the other remaining titles have been swept up by Simon Singleton, Bayden Jackson, Adam Lilley and Steve Denton.

You would need to return to the North and South Islands from 2022 before you return to Kiwi dominance, when Des Wilcox and Dan Bowen respectively took home the Singles titles.

⬇️ SOUTH ISLAND PREDICTIONS
After a disappointing North Island Singles campaign, I’m expecting Simon Singleton to take out the Singles, and Adam Lilley and Bret De Faria to defend their South Island Pairs crown from last year.

A big thanks to everyone who tuned into the livestream over the weekend!

There's always a lot going on behind the scenes at these events so in particular thanks to Jim Marriner for sorting out the ultra fast WiFi connection, Patrick J O'Donnell for answering my queries and facilitating the stream with the host club, as well as Bret John De Faria for providing me with a bed for three nights.

But I'll let our champion Healey White have the final word. A humble guy on and off the table who spoke with class after his victory over Camelia Cook.
