It’s hard to describe what goes into making an album, in a world that is dominated by singles, & a saturated music market in which so much is available, but for those of us who create major pieces of recorded work, here is a place to stop and pause, and reflect on the hand built aspect of what we’ve accomplished. They are released as finished songs. But, what goes into it? Often a song arrives in the studio, unfinished or undefined in certain ways. Then there is the matter of building a sound, with players whom we choose, based on what we’re hearing, intuitively, emotionally, and with some nod towards the formulaic. Some decisions are made due to budget constraints, but more often than not, we are only looking to add an instrument, or voice, as the song calls for it. This is what a producer is on top of; It’s what I do, and what I love to do.
I have waited so long for this album to be released, with patience, and even a jaded resignation, knowing that its reach will only go as far as we can tap into channels that will help the music find its way, to listeners, who might like it, be moved by it, or changed by it. I can hardly express how important this project was, to me, personally, and to my daughter, Freya. She initiated it, and I felt incredibly honored, from the start, to be called to lead the production team. She had been sitting on a lot of creativity, for a long period of time, and this project came as a revelation to me, and an opportunity I could never pass up. Kudos to her, for finding the linkage. You don’t always know what you can do, and how you can collaborate, until you try. This takes courage.
We were honored to work with many fine musicians during this effort. “Delicate Elements” had inspired support from Lutalo Jones, Jeff Berlin, Ray Paczkowski, Patrick Ross, Val McCallum, Bow Thayer, Abby Jenne, and Zoe Lenker. We are forever grateful.
