The Supreme Court of India has issued new guidelines to prevent the disparaging portrayal of persons with disabilities in visual media and films. The guidelines emphasize that terms such as “cripple” and “spastic” have acquired devalued meanings in societal perceptions, and filmmakers must ensure accurate and respectful representations.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that persons with disabilities should neither be lampooned based on myths nor presented as "super cripples." The court highlighted the importance of avoiding stereotypes and ensuring that portrayals reflect the lived experiences of persons with disabilities. The decision came in response to a petition by social entrepreneur and disability rights activist Nipun Malhotra, who argued against disparaging references in the Hindi film "Aankh Micholi."

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦 "𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛 𝐃𝐢 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐚𝐳" 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

In line with the Supreme Court's guidelines, the film "Rabb Di Awaaz," released on 28th December 2023, stands as a groundbreaking initiative. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ojaswwee Sharma, it is India's first multi-inclusive Hindi feature film. The film received its CBFC Certification on 26th December 2023 and was later certified in special formats—Hindi Audio Description for the visually impaired and Indian Sign Language for the hearing impaired—on 7th February 2024.
One of the film's strongest merits is in its authentic portrayal of persons with disabilities, referred to as persons with special and greater abilities along with its accessibility to the audiences. Shiv Kumar Sharma stars in the leading role, supported by a meritorious cast, many of whom are actors with disabilities. "Rabb Di Awaaz" has been praised for its genuine and respectful representation, avoiding the extremes of caricature and exaggerated heroism. It showcases the true and meritorious potential of individuals with disabilities, presenting their lived experiences with dignity and depth.

"As a filmmaker, my goal with 'Rabb Di Awaaz' was to highlight the incredible abilities and stories of persons with disabilities, giving them the platform they deserve in mainstream cinema. This film is a testament to their strength, resilience, and talent. I believe that accurate and respectful representation in media can change societal perceptions and foster a more inclusive world. I am deeply honored by the positive reception the film has received and hope it inspires more inclusive storytelling in the industry. I welcome this step by the Supreme Court, but I would like to also thank CBFC for watching and certifying 'Rabb Di Awaaz' with a 'U' Certification."
The film has been seen by lacs in the six months since its release and has been screened at almost 50 venues across North India. We aim to reach even more audiences in the coming year.
The making and releasing of Rabb Di Awaaz is a step towards an Inclusive Cinema and Inclusive Bharat and the screening of the film at screening venues supported by educational institutions is a step towards Inclusive Education.

Legal Advisor and Disability activist Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma was recognized not only for his exceptional work on "Rabb Di Awaaz" but also for his efforts in raising awareness about disability in North India through the impactful Rotary Dinner in the Dark Project.

National Award-winning Film Director Shri Ojaswwee Sharma received this recognition on behalf of the film "Rabb Di Awaaz" - India's 1st multi-inclusive Hindi feature Film.

"Rabb Di Awaaz" has been hailed for its profound social impact, sparking important conversations and driving community action towards inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities. The film's poignant storytelling and powerful message have resonated deeply with audiences, highlighting the importance of empathy, understanding, and advocacy.

The District Governor of Rotary 3080 was notably impressed by the film during its screening on the 19th of May 2024 at the Institute for Children with Special Abilities, Dhalli, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

In his acceptance, Ojaswwee Sharma dedicated the award to the dedicated team, co-technicians, and co-actors who contributed to the film's success and expressed gratitude to Rotary District 3080 and Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik.

Actors Abhinav Sharma and Mohit Verma, Film Editor Bhasker Pandey and Cinematographer Sandeep Kumar were also present on the occasion.

कानूनी सलाहकार और दिव्यांगता कार्यकर्ता श्री शिव कुमार शर्मा को "रब्ब दी आवाज़" में उनके उत्कृष्ट कार्य के लिए ही नहीं, बल्कि नॉर्थ इंडिया में दिव्यांगता के प्रति जागरूकता बढ़ाने के लिए प्रभावशाली रोटरी डिनर इन द डार्क प्रोजेक्ट के माध्यम से उनके प्रयासों के लिए भी सम्मानित किया गया।

ओजस्वी शर्मा ने पुरस्कार स्वीकार करते हुए फिल्म की सफलता में योगदान देने वाली समर्पित टीम, सह-तकनीशियनों और सह-कलाकारों को यह पुरस्कार समर्पित किया तथा रोटरी डिस्ट्रिक्ट 3080 और रोटरी चंडीगढ़ शिवालिक के प्रति आभार व्यक्त किया।

India, June 21, 2024 – "Rabb Di Awaaz" – India's first multi-inclusive film – has completed its 25-week journey through film screenings and digital streaming, marking a significant milestone. The film, acclaimed for its entertaining and engaging narrative, focuses on inclusivity, mental health, and social issues, receiving positive feedback from audiences of all ages and groups across various platforms.

Viewed and experienced by audiences in nearly all states of India, neighboring countries, North America, Australia, Canada, and Dubai, the film's global reach continues to expand, with these regions among the most watched. As a step towards inclusive cinema, inclusive India, and promoting understanding of inclusive education and communication, "Rabb Di Awaaz" is establishing new benchmarks. Its growing impact is now evident in the society.
The film, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ojaswwee Sharma, is available with Hindi audio description and in Indian Sign Language. It has been experienced by thousands of visually and hearing-impaired viewers in India.

The producers aim to reach every segment of society.

Additional screenings have been scheduled across various regions in July and August, aiming to extend the inspirational narrative of the film to new audiences. Over 47 screenings have already been completed in urban and rural centers across North India.

Today, we commemorate the 4th anniversary of the release of "Admitted," - the film that has emerged as a pivotal documentary on transgender education and human rights in Modern Indian cinema. The iconic in estd in 1887 hosted the 47th special screening of - India's First Multi-Inclusive Hindi Feature Film on Sunday evening. This landmark event was graced by a diverse audience from across India, including notable leaders of various social development organizations, who had travelled to Shimla for the weekend.
Directed by the National Award-winning director Shri Ojaswwee Sharma, recipient of the Rajat Kamal from the President of India at the 68th National Film Awards, "Rabb Di Awaaz" has continued to captivate audiences with its heartfelt narrative and strong message. The film's star cast, including leading actors Shiv Kumar Sharma, Abhinav Sharma, Mohit Verma, Jagdeep Lamba, Varun Narang, and Sarvpriya Nirmohi, made a surprise appearance, delighting attendees with their presence.
On the occasion, Shri Ojaswwee Sharma expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Pankaj Lalit, Director of Language Art & Culture, Himachal Pradesh, for his support, wishes, and encouragement towards the film and its screenings in Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Pankaj Lalit also attended the screening of the film held at the Institute for Children with Special Abilities in Dhalli, Shimla, in May 2024.
Smt. Shyama Dogra, Former Chairperson of Permanent Lok Adalat, Chandigarh, and Former Chairperson of Himachal Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and Shri Saurabh Raj Sood, President-Elect of Rotary Club of Shimla, watched the film with the audience and shared their reflections on the impact of the film.
"Rabb Di Awaaz," tells the inspiring story of RJ Karan, whose life is profoundly changed after an unexpected interview with Shiv, a visually challenged individual. Set in the dynamic environment of a bustling radio station, the film explores the transformative journey of a once-popular RJ, promoting inclusivity and mental health awareness. It encourages viewers to embrace a more empathetic and inclusive perspective on life.
To date, "Rabb Di Awaaz" has been experienced by over half a million (5 lac+) viewers across various platforms, including in-person screenings at universities, colleges, schools, and community centres in 15 cities and villages across three states and two Union Territories. The film is accessible with Hindi and English subtitles, Hindi audio description for the visually impaired, and Indian Sign Language for the hearing impaired, ensuring it reaches a diverse audience.
"Rabb Di Awaaz" celebrates the milestones of Inclusive Cinema, Inclusive Bharat, and Inclusive Education.
The film has received numerous accolades, including the Best Film 2024 award from the Media Federation of India and the Public Relations Council of India for its pioneering role in inclusivity. This prestigious award was presented by Acharya Devvrat, Hon’ble Governor of Gujarat, India, who also served as the former Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, "Rabb Di Awaaz" was honored as the Best Film on Disability 2024 at the World Film Festival Cannes Online Edition.
As "Rabb Di Awaaz" approaches its 25-week milestone, the Silver Jubilee celebrations have commenced, marking 50 screenings this June 2024. This film continues to inspire and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of inclusivity and mental health.

शिमला, 10 जून, 2024 – शिमला में 1887 में स्थापित प्रतिष्ठित गेयटी थिएटर ने रविवार शाम को भारत की पहली बहु-समावेशी हिंदी फीचर फिल्म "रब्ब दी आवाज़" की 47वीं विशेष स्क्रीनिंग की मेजबानी की। इस ऐतिहासिक कार्यक्रम में भारत भर से विविध दर्शकों ने भाग लिया, जिसमें विभिन्न सामाजिक विकास संगठनों के उल्लेखनीय प्रतिनिधि भी शामिल थे, जो सप्ताहांत के लिए शिमला आए थे।
