“[…] The most recent political burial being prepared is the one for the five United National Congress members of Parliament (the UNC five) connected to the slate of candidates led by Rushton Paray MP.
“[…] The UNC five were restrained in their criticisms and did not descend into much personal abuse of UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar. After their defeat they tried to humble themselves. Despite all this, political ex*****on likely awaits them.
“By contrast, in the United Kingdom, Kemi Badenoch, the recent winner of the leadership contest in the opposition Conservative Party, has included her main rival in her shadow cabinet…”

Another big pappy resigned last week but of course that was in foreign. As with lame duck US President Joe Biden, that big pappy too was pushed from within. The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who was the leader of 85 million Anglicans worldwide, had to resign because an investigation found....

“[…] A core reason for our autocratic tendency is that our Rentier economy has all the revenue going through our government for disbursement to the rest of us. The prime minister becomes an emperor.

“Decisions about political leadership are hinged on the ability to regain or maintain control of the energy revenues accruing to the state, not on a vision for the future.

“Rentier State theory derived from a study of the Gulf cases speaks to the creation of an ‘oil social compact’, in which business abandons direct political involvement for state mediated profits (Crystal 1990). ‘We will keep quiet; you can share the rewards with us’ is the agreement…”

The autocratic nature of our politics is most memorably captured in the sordid 1962 episode featuring Dr Patrick Solomon, minister of Home Affairs in the People’s National Movement (PNM) government—with responsibility for the police service. His stepson was arrested and incarcerated for throwing...

“[…] In a rather surprising judgment delivered on 6 November 2024, between the Estate Police Association (EPA) and the Central Bank, the Special Tribunal of the Industrial Court awarded the precepted security personnel at the Central Bank a 6 per cent increase for the period 2015 to 2017.
“What is strange and questionable about this judgment is that the Central Bank had offered the workers a 9 per cent increase…”

The Industrial Court Special Tribunal delivered a judgment on 18 February 2022, and ruled that it would be too expensive for the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) to pay any increased salaries at this time. As such, the workers T&TEC were not awarded any salary increases for the per...

“[…] Colin Murray suggests that if St Benedict’s College [are] found guilty of breaching the rules, the punishment should not impact this year’s competition. Instead, the college should start the next season with a nine-point deficit.
“[…] A decision to penalize next year’s team effectively shifts the consequences onto a group of students who had no involvement in this year’s infractions. This raises ethical concerns about fairness and accountability…”

The following Letter to the Editor about the registration debacle involving St Benedict’s College and TTFA vice-president Colin Murray’s view on the matter was submitted to Wired868 by Anthony Lee Kim:

“[…] Today, Derrel Garcia settled St Benedict’s College’s South Zone Intercol semifinal contest inside the first 45 minutes of play, with a first half hattrick as the “La Romaine Lions” mauled second tier outfit, Pleasantville Secondary, 6-0 at the Mahaica Sporting Complex.
“Garcia, the St Benedict’s captain and forward has 22 goals from 11 appearances this season—an astonishing return of two items per match.
“Next Friday, it will be the turn of Naparima College to try and stop him. ‘Naps’ secured their own pathway to the South final via kicks from the penalty mark against fierce rivals, Presentation College (San Fernando)…”

Derrel “Zoom Zoom” Garcia continues to write the story of the 2024 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) season with almost every move. Today, Garcia settled St Benedict’s College’s South Zone Intercol semifinal contest inside the first 45 minutes of play, with a first half hattrick as th...

“[…] I think my creativity as well as my goal scoring ability makes me standout. It gives me something unique, that a lot of other players might not have.
“[…] My ambition is to one day play in the Champions League—that is a big goal for me. I also want to play more for my country…”

Fatima College star Caden Trestrail was the highest scoring midfielder in the 2024 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division competition with 12 goals—and the second most prolific player in the competition behind St Benedict’s College captain Derrel Garcia (17 goals).
The 16-year-old ace took time out from his National Intercol campaign to talk one-on-one with Wired868 intern Denicia Baptiste:

“Fatima College are still alive in the 2024 Coca Cola National Intercol competition, but they were pushed to the brink by Malick Secondary in a seven-goal thriller at Diego Martin Complex today.

“[…] St Benedict’s College, with the threat of expulsion in the air, must try to prepare as normal for a South Zone Intercol semifinal clash with Pleasantville Secondary tomorrow at the Mahaica Sporting Complex.
“SSFL president Merere Gonzales suggested that the Disciplinary Committee, which is headed by East Zone president Adesh Dwarika and includes Kurt Harry and Laurence Seepersad, felt it still lacked enough information to render a verdict.
“[…] The downside is that, having cast a shadow over the 2024 Premier Division competition, the Derrel Garcia affair now looks to also bring the Intercol competition into disrepute…”

Wired868 considers the cost of inaction in relation to the Derrel Garcia issue; and the different approaches taken by St Benedict’s College and Naparima College in relation to two Spain-based national youth players

What is the fate of St Benedict’s College—in relation to the registration of captain and star attacker Derrel “Zoom Zoom” Garcia? It is arguably the single most important matter on the pending tray of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) executive committee. Yet, the Disciplinary Com...

“[…] San Juan North Secondary, the most dominant east Trinidad team of the Premier Division era, walloped second tier outfit El Dorado Secondary 5-0 to advance to a remarkable seventh straight zonal Intercol final.
“[…] Trinity College East, who are still in danger of relegation from the top flight, kept their Intercol run going with a second successive penalty shootout triumph.

“[…] Elsewhere in Tobago, there was a late change to the semifinal line-up with Bishop’s High School replacing Mason Hill Secondary via the protest room.
“Mason Hill Secondary defeated Bishop’s 4-1 last Thursday in a clash between two Championship Division outfits. However, the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Disciplinary Committee accepted Bishop’s protest that Mason Hall attacker Rickeldi Williams, who scored a hattrick, was actually an illegal player…”

“[…] We, too, face the same challenge [as the United States]: are our politicians above the law? Do and will we excuse them because they are our felons? Would we throw out all sense of decency to win an election and to rub the noses of our opposition into the earth?
“[…] A perpetual question for me was the quality of education. I am aware of the pitched battles over the teaching of slavery, but it appears that critical thinking was also not taught.
“Uneducated people, low wages, and high inflation form an explosive combination. What would the sense be if you worked hard, followed the American dream, and had to stay in your parents’ home because you could not afford to do otherwise?
“Guys like Donald Trump are waiting to pounce and will offer you anything. Your lack of critical thinking power makes you a sitting duck…”

“[…] This year, 2024, is not a year of a general election unless the current Prime Minister (the PM) and Political Leader of the People’s National Movement (the PNM), as he is entitled to do, calls it ahead of the mandatory time to do so.
“It is curious therefore that he seeks to explain the abrupt cancellation of the PNM convention and internal election scheduled for 17 November, by reference to a “PNM tradition” not to have an internal election “in any year of a general election”.

“[…] Has it has slipped out perhaps that the PM had been or is seriously considering making this a year of a general election by calling it early? […]”

“[…] In our anger at poor performances, we invoke the memory of the formidable teams during the eras of Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards. But we invoke them as whips on the backs of the contemporary players.
“It is what I call casual cruelty; the kind that is common in the way we raise our children. We take those teams from the glory days and we make them out to be perfection incarnate.
“[…] When we persuade ourselves that we have to sanitize the lives of our heroes, we are actually saying we are ashamed of them, that we have to clean them up to make them respectable. It is a dishonest and revisionist way of recording our histories, unworthy of our heritage…”

In one of his final interviews, at the end of the tour of England in 1963, Frank Worrell laid out his plans for the future to Ian Wooldridge. I quoted some of it in my biography, Son of Grace, where he refers to the background of hostility he had faced. “You may be surprised to …

“[…] From the sixties, until his death in 1967, Frank Worrell was more of an icon as a West Indian leader, whose qualities of grace and wisdom framed him as the ideal representative of a society still constructing its identity.
“Yet, for much of his career he was plagued by insecurities—haunted by traumas and embittered by inequities within the social structures that dominated regional life.
“To understand his complexity, one had to dig deep into the forces that shaped him: the childhood years that are often overlooked as significant foundations in the development of the adult…”

There’s an immediate challenge in compiling a biography of someone who was a legend during his lifetime. Inevitably, myths spring up—so that even if you can separate fact from fiction, it is almost sacrilege to bring balance to the scrutiny because people prefer to hold on to their folklores. Fr...

“[…] What they (Cricket West Indies) have given Alzarri Joseph is a couple days of rest [and] a slap on the wrist… This was coming for a long while… He has obvious problems with his anger and aggression.

The following is a Letter to the Editor by veteran cricket commentator Joseph “Reds” Perreira on the Cricket West Indies’ two match suspension of fast bowler Alzarri Joseph for indiscipline:
