Being in love with travel for most of his life, Zachary “Maui” Jones, has spent the last 17 years exploring the world and capturing it behind his camera lens. In the 6th grade, Zach finally accomplished his goal, taking his first trip to England with his aunt and cousin. Throughout his teenage years of traveling, Zach learned to immerse himself in different places and communities, which ultimately

upon graduating from Oakland Friend School, led him to study Global Environmental Studies at Clark University. As long as I can remember wildlife has always captivated me. Some of my earlier memories are belly crowning along the earth watching insects in the soil clinging to trees or sitting on the edge of waterways watching water striders, fish, and frogs. As I’ve gotten older I find that that wonder has never really left me and whenever I get a chance (whether I captured it or not) I try to steal a moment connecting to the lives that surround me. Seeing the diversity of living beings on our planet captivates us as humans and often reminds us of how insignificant we are or empowers our inner demons to try to exert our power over them.

In December 2023, I embarked on a 3-week adventure to Bali and the surrounding islands. In Vlog 58, I traveled from mainland Bali to three small islands just off the coast. Nusa Penida is the most well-known, accompanied by Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, but I chose to stay on the smaller and lesser-known islands. I went to the islands based on a friend's recommendation to obtain my PADI Advanced Open Water Certificate. While there, I explored the islands both on land and in the underwater world below.

In December 2023, I went on a 3-week adventure to Bali and the surrounding islands. In Vlog 56 I met up with a friend, Nida, and we visited the town of Ubud, Bali to stay at the Eat Pray Love House. On our Last full day Nida and I split up so that she can attend water purification ceremonies and palm reading and I can head off to the hills around Ubud to explore some waterfalls and learn to cook some Balinese cuisine in a local cooking class.

In Vlog 53, I finish a work trip in Colorado and finally have some free time to explore. If you are new to the channel, I make time to seek out new and exciting experiences whenever possible. Time is our most valuable asset, so it's important not to let work consume us completely. Even on a work trip, it's essential to find time to get out and explore. In Part II of the vlog, I finished the conference and went out to explore several locations such as Lily Lake, Sprague Lake, Forest Canyon Overlook, and the Summit Alpine Visitor Center. Once I finished my time in the mountains, I headed back to Boulder to finish out the trip.

Well, this is my first time posting on LWTG about the house that I bought back in 2021. At the time that I bought it, I was excited, but a bit apprehensive. I wasn’t sure how being a homeowner would affect my ability to travel, but it was extremely important to me to own a house and property in the community/ area I grew up in. After about two years and change I can honestly say that thus far, it has been a great decision. It has been amazing to be able to have a home base, have a place to host family, friends, and community, and add My first property and another income source to my portfolio.

During the darkness, everything feels amplified, the same but foreign all at once. Nighttime photography has never been my forte but slowly but surely I am working to feel more comfortable with the medium.

📍 Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
The horseshoe crab is near and dear to my heart. As a young boy, for almost 20 years my family would head to Provincetown, Cape Cod as our yearly family vacation. As children, we would blow up inflatable boats and head out onto Provincetown Bay and Free dive collecting hermit crabs, sand dollars, and horseshoe crabs. My cousins and I would spend hours upon hours on the beach creating grandiose tales of villages and kingdoms ruled by these sea creatures. In 2017 my cousin (basically brother) passed away at the age of 22 and in remembrance, I got a horseshoe crab tattoo on my right shoulder. It’s a small way to keep his sorry alive but no matter where I go in the world on my journey I can keep him and the horseshoe crabs by my side.

📍 Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati( Water Palace) Ubud, Bali
While visiting Ubud my friend and I decided to stop in to visit the Water Palace. In order to enter the grounds, you have to wear special clothing and garb in order to respect the temple. Not gonna lie the outfit was a whole vibe, and definitely the energy I’m trying to bring into the New Year.

The Water Palace is a Hindu temple dedicated to the water god Sarasvati. She is also the goddess of knowledge, music., Wealth, art, and wisdom. She is one of the three goddesses of the Tridevi (Trinity of supreme divinity) accompanied by Lakshmi and Parvati.

In 2017-2018, I had the opportunity to travel to Taipei, Taiwan with my friend Richie. Our trip marked the beginning of my 60-day journey around the world and also coincided with the New Year celebrations. As we explored the city, we made a stop at Longshan Temple to offer a Buddhist incense prayer for the well-being of our families. The temple is unique because it combines elements of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, making it a place of worship for people of all faiths.

When I was visiting Taipei City on my 60-day around-the-world trip (Check out my YouTube channel to see full videos) my friend Richie and I decided to head up into the hills behind the city to visit some of the Tea Shops. On that day it was misty and raining and after wandering the winding road for a bit Richie and I decided to pop into a tea shop that caught our eye. This led to an amazing class learning about bringing tea leaves from fields to the table and how to prepare and pour them properly. and his brother led us in the lesson and shared with us the history of his family tea company. It turned out to be a great afternoon with and his friends taking us to a local deserts shop afterward.

When traveling through Portugal back in 2016, I stopped in the town of Lagos on the way to Sagres. Although I didn't get to spend a lot of time exploring the town, I had the opportunity to explore the amazing coastline and hidden beaches. Portugal in general has some of the most magical cliffs and caves along the shoreline that are limestone shaped by the sea.

The ocean and water have always been a very special place for me. It has been a place of calm, fear, excitement the known and unknown. Naturally, this has led to me explore the water in many different ways but one that has always been special is surfing. I don’t nearly get out enough to do it but on my trip to Siargao my friend Richie and I were lucky enough to be taught and connect with some amazing locals. Our main instructor was Loloy who at the time was ranked number 8 in the Philippines. Loy has such amazing relationships with surfing and the water surf with a ton of power. It was a great experience and very challenging because the break we were surfing was very different than the beach break I was used to. Outside of the water we were also able to learn a lot about surfing and the Island from Ikit Agudo (Number 1 female Filipina surfer at the time) & Alex Pineda who both worked at the Buddha Siargao hotel. The first image I captured (2018) is a famous surf location that has been well-known amongst the surf community but has experienced a lot of changes due to the island being built up for tourism. The last 3 are are some quick portraits. I feel very grateful I was able to meet such an amazing group of people on my travels and learn from them in and out of the water. Pictures like this are import to me because they capture a moment of a bunch of kids coming together by chance

📍Dayon Hostel, Coron, Philippines
I often get asked about my solo travel and when I am on my journey if I get nervous. My answer almost always is no, because when you are traveling you start to realize that all the people around you are potential friends you haven’t met yet. In 2017 & 2018 my friend Richie and I spent a month each year traveling around the Philippines (2 months total). This trip taught Richie and me a lot about ourselves but also a lot about friendship. Richie and I are both pretty extroverted people so we make friends quite easily along the way but there are people you meet that you connect with that you know are going to be a part of your life longer than just a trip. John and his brother have worked extremely hard and opened a gray hostel Dayon Hostel on the island of Coron in the Philippines 🇵🇭. By chance Richie and I found it when we were looking for a place to stay. Some of my best memories in the Philippines are exploring this amazing island exploring the dirt roads of the island traveling to remote beaches with only locals as our company or exploring the amazing snorkel & dive locations around the island. But one of the things that took it to the next level was the amazing home base we had. John and his family are an amazing group of people and I’m extremely lucky to call him a friend. If you are ever visiting the island of Coron you should consider staying at Dayon Hostel. (John I know you said to hold off on posting this, but it’s 5 years I think it’s time to let this banger out of the bag and let folks into the gun 💪🏾show)

Back in 2018, I did a trip that I called Around the World in 60 days. On this trip, I flew out of Newark Airport and landed back again at JFK Airport in New York. On this trip, I started celebrating New Year in Taiwan, Traveled the Philippines for about a month (Boracay, Cebu, Coron, Siargao Island, Dumaguete), Trek Nepali Mountain ranges with friends from college ( Kathmandu, Chitawan, Pokhara), Party in the Netherlands with a friend who was a local DJ I meet in 2016 in Vietnam, Explore Germany with local friends I meet in Thailand & Vietnam (Berlin, Stuttgart, Hamburg), and lastly end the trip partying with some of the lads in Portsmouth, UK for the Uni reunion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I captured this image on a lazy day after surfing in Siargao. This is a local taco shake that was pretty popular among locals and tourists alike. I loved the rustic nature of the building and the bright colors that pop out against the fading plaster and tin roof of the building. Some of my favorite images I captured along my travels are these random moments that I can freeze in time. When I look back at these images It transports me back to that meal, the smell, the view, the friends, and the emotions I was feeling at that time in my life. Some folks like to debate whether time travel is real, but I can tell you firsthand that I have been lucky enough to be doing it since 2004.

📍Great Sand Dune National Park, Colorado, USA
I have to say my visit to the Great Sand Dunes was a wild experience. At the time I was traveling the USA Covid living in the back of a Dodge Ram 1500 with a Micro camper built on the back. When we arrived at the Sand Dunes the weather was beautiful and there was a solid amount of the people adventuring in the dunes. As we started our hike to the top of the dunes a massive storm blew over the mountains forcing almost everyone off of the dunes. Denise (my girlfriend at the time) stayed committed to a very difficult hike due to the wind speeds and rain that was whipping the sand up to the point it hurt to walk. After over 1 hr hike we made it to the top and the skies opened up with beautiful weather, the wild flower opening up in full bloom, and the Sand Dunes totally to ourselves.

In Vlog 45, I returned to Bangkok from Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon). I visited Niras Cultural Hostel to exchange some of my stuff (which they kindly stored for me) before heading to the airport to travel north to Chiang Mai and Pai. On my first night, I stayed in Chiang Mai and went out with some people from Stamps Hostel. The next day, I rented a scooter and rode to Pai to meet my friend Sophia (whom I met at Niras Cultural Hostel, as seen in the "48 hours in Bangkok" video). After arriving I go with some folks from the hostel I was staying at to catch a sunset at the Pai Canyon, From there we head into town to grab dinner at the Pai Night Market. The next day our crew went to explore the greater Pai valley. On our adventure we ended up stopping at Mo Pang Waterfall to try out an epic rock waterslide, Yun Lai Viewing Point, Thai Pai Hot Springs, and ended the day's adventure at Chedi Phra That Mae Yen วัดพระธาตุแม่เย็น (White Buddha Temple) for sunset. Lastly, it isn't a night in Pai without stopping at the night market for some local eats and a few drinks at the Pai Jazz House.
