Whoever’s bought timber from the local merchant knows that it rarely comes nice and straight so how do carpenters get around that? Here I am using a surface plane to take out the inconsistencies in the timber ready to be thicknessed for door construction … The 2 halves of the top plate either side of the blades are in alignment with each other and once I’ve decided which way the timber is bowing I make sure that the timber is placed on the machine with the outside of the curve facing up. You will notice the blades lack of contact with the timber in the middle of the first pass and then continuous contact on the second indicating that I’m straightening that face of the timber. As with everything it is about actually starting that is the hardest part so I hope this is inspiring to someone to make themself something simple from basic materials and with easy to access tools. I will be doing more videos from now on and will try to incorporate a wider range of skills including traditional jointing, bow making and timber framing/cabin building depending how far down the rabbit hole people want to go.

Have you got a restoration project on where your sanding discs just clog up with the layers of build up from years of poor maintenance? My go to tool for this is the back of a chisel held upright or at a slight angle and then pulled towards you, done correctly you will remove that top sticky horrible layer typical on wooden work surfaces until you create a very thin wood ribbon… then it’s ready to sand. Cutting some spalted beech today to make some funky legs for a little piece of furniture. dewalttoolsuk 54 volt chainsaw is a great tool for in and around the workshop where noise and fumes want to be kept to a minimum. Remember to wear safety equipment when using chainsaws unlike me in this video, even the battery ones.

Sundays are best spent assembling reclaimed wood furniture. This soon to be bathroom unit is made entirely of reclaimed wood. The end panels were taken out of an old cottage close to my workshop, the frame is made of old floor joists with the big nails left in and the worktop wil be made out of recycled pews from an old church 👍
