These senior staff members have deep institutional knowledge of the Archive’s history and goals; they built the organizational structures, collections, and community outreach that allowed it to grow and thrive. We are deeply concerned that these firings represent a deviation from the Academy’s stated mission “to recognize and uphold excellence in the motion picture arts and sciences, inspire imagination, and connect the world through the medium of motion pictures.”

We have a Poverty Row double feature release of King of the Zombies and Miss V From Moscow coming January 2025! I thought it would be nice to recognize some actors whose faces you may recognize, but might not know much about.

Mantan Moreland was energy and life on screen! Sadly, because of the characters he portrayed, he was criticized later in life and not given the credit he deserves for opening the door for other African American actors in Hollywood at a different time in our history.

IMDB TRIVIA: He was the in-house comic relief artist for poverty-row Monogram Pictures. Most audiences will remember him best for his recurring role as Birmingham Brown in Monogram's "Charlie Chan" series. Unlike other studios' treatment of their black performers, however, Monogram considered him of such importance to them that his name always appeared high on the cast list of his films.
