On a Tuli horse safari in Botswana to look at the flooding Motloutse river, a tiny zebra foal came trotting up the bank. It must have fallen in the river upstream and had been washed down stream. Miraculously, it had managed to pull itself out of the water onto the bank. Bewildered, soaked and dazed, it walked right up to the horse riders and horses, as it seemed to hear the hoof beats of the horses climbing over the rocks. We can only imagine, it thought it had heard its' mother? The zebra foal came with the ride, and walked amongst the horses. It constantly looked to one horse for a lead. But once reaching the bottom and other side of the rocks, the zebra started to trot off in the wrong direction!! Although the riders tried to lead the foal in the right direction, towards its parents, it cantered off. There were some tense moments whether the foal and parents would join up. Have you ever seen a swallow fallen to the ground, its wings seemingly abandoned? Your heart sinks, doesn’t it? You think it’s sick, injured, perhaps doomed. Your instinct tells you to stay away, not to touch, not to get involved. But you stop for a moment. You observe it better.
Maybe it’s not sick at all. Maybe it just needs a little help. Help that you, with one simple movement, can provide.
Swallows, these acrobats of the sky, are not made to take off from flat surfaces. Their small legs don’t give them the necessary momentum, and their long, elegant wings hit the ground. Imagine a plane trying to take off from the grass, without a runway.
If you see a swallow in this situation, don’t panic. Don’t ignore it. Don’t leave it to the dangers that lurk at ground level – cats, cars, curious children.
Approach carefully. Speak softly, so as not to scare her. Bend down and pick her up gently in your hands. Feel her small, vibrating body, her pulse quickening with fear.
Now, the crucial step. Raise your arms slowly, giving her a launching pad. Don't throw her! You're just lifting her up, giving her the opportunity to feel the wind beneath her wings again.
You'll see the magic. In an instant, her wings will open wide, her agile figure will project into the air, and she will soar towards the sky that is her home. A short, contented chirp, perhaps, will be lost in the distance.
You have become the hero of a small life. You have offered a chance. You have contributed to the fragile balance of nature.
The next time you see a swallow on the ground, remember this story. Don't be afraid to intervene. Don't be afraid to help. Sometimes, a small helping hand can make a huge difference. It can save a life.
And who knows, maybe your gesture will inspire others to look more closely at the world around them, to notice the beauty and vulnerability of small creatures, and to lend a helping hand when needed. Because, after all, aren't we all a bit like swallows, sometimes needing a little nudge to take flight again.

💔 Absolutely heartbreaking beyond words. Evil to its' core. The animal agriculture industrial complex should be burned at the stake. One day, the soul of humanity will realize the atrocities committed upon innocent and defenseless sentient beings to satiate the appetite of the ego were the most barbaric and evil crimes of all time. Pray the day of justice will come not a day too soon and the 'human' species wakes up from the stupor of indoctrination and cognitive dissonance. This is a karmic cycle that cannot be broken without moral conscience.

It is critical that an oversight committee be appointed for the welfare of animals. There are far too many that are killed while rescues have offered to save them and far too many that are never even seen and killed without conscience or reason. It is reprehensible that sentient innocent beings are treated with such callous disregard for their lives. It is unconscionable. It is imperative that an oversight committee be appointed without further delay.

Breeders of dogs used in sledding have freely admitted that “surplus” dogs are killed. They may be killed if they aren’t fast or fit enough for competition or if they don’t meet certain aesthetic standards. Dogs who finish the race but are no longer useful to the industry may be shot, drowned, or abandoned to starve.

A PETA eyewitness worked at two dog kennels owned by former Iditarod champions and found widespread neglect and suffering there. Dogs were denied veterinary care for painful injuries; kept constantly chained in the bitter cold with only dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels for “shelter” and forced to run even when they were exhausted and dehydrated.

While only a few hundred dogs raised for the race will ultimately be deemed fit enough to compete, many more will be kept tethered and chained for most of their lives, or mercilessly killed.

It’s been reported that in the first Iditarod race, at least 15 dogs died—and the body count has continued to pile up since then.
