A couple of pics from our drum session with Alex Izzo for the forthcoming FEAR THE DEAN EP.

Alex has a pretty interesting setup! Drummers will surely pick up a few cool things like his suspended crashes, 70s style kick drum, his rack tom is actually a 14x14 floor tom, dude’s got a bongo in there too. But my favourite piece is his Steven Tyler inspired cowbell 👌🏻

The day wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t snap a photo for Alex’s Modern Drummer Magazine cover pic 💥

Freq Shop is the perfect place to track drums. We built our live room, drum collection and mic locker for it! It also doesn’t hurt when your engineer has been behind the drums themselves for 30+ years.

We did a huge drum R&D day yesterday at Freq Shop We went through and tested a lot of our gear, troubleshooted stuff and experimented a lot with drum sounds.

We brought in a new toy called the bot a device that helps you tune drums by measuring the frequency at each lug.

Man I was skeptical. I’ve tried so many gadgets over the years but dude…. This things rules! It surpassed my expectations by a mile!

Drums are TOUGH but this tool makes it so EASY to tune a drum perfectly. PERFECTLY… dude… dude… don’t sleep on it. As you can tell I’m pretty blown away.

Producers, engineers, drummers… Thank me later 🤘🏼

The incomporable Mario Telaro joined us at Freq Shop this week to lay down some drum tracks for some remote sessions for artists in a few corners of the world. Mario is an incredible player and only ever needs 1 or 2 takes so we had plenty of time left over to let him rip up the drum kit!

Here is one of the drum solos he dazzled us with for his solo project THE CHEMICAL SYNDICATE

Enjoy watching a master of their craft in their element!!

Recording the monstrous owned by mr.

We’ve recorded a lot of drums, but honestly the Birch/Bubinga kits are quite possibly the easiest and best sounding drums I’ve had under the mics ever. The drum shell does all the work. Fat, punchy, controlled and super beefy… Damn shame they discontinued these amazing drums..

Can’t wait to get a set of Tama B/B’s under the mics again.

Drum sesh! Let’s go! 🔫

Every time i put up mics to record drums I always save 1 input to try something wacky, something new, something different. Maybe it’s the mic placement, or the effect chain… I like to experiment and try new things!

Got some new ideas! Let’s hear it… I’m getting tired of the old 57 in a shoe trick 🤣🤣🤣

Spent the day with re-amping guitars for their upcoming release. We got some BIG tones from these little amps 💪

Nothing fancy here, just the tried, tested and true combo of a Shure SM57 with a Sennheiser MD421 on each amp, with the added bonus of a pair of room mics.

Notice we didn’t use a stereo pair for rooms, but rather we opted to blend a dark AEA R84 ribbon mic with a bright RODE NT1A condenser mic. (Each guitar part will collapse to mono so this is a tone blending technique).

We sent each guitar performance through all these amps! So each part sounds thick and HUUUUGE!!!

Mic preamps are soooo important… but what do they do??

Microphone preamps are used to bring a microphone signal UP to Line Level (line level is the standard operating level for all equipment in the audio world)… getting your signal to line level is important so that signals can move cleanly from gear to gear and no noise is being added to your audio.

When a microphone gets connected to a preamp, the preamp becomes an extension of the microphone. A good mic preamp will make a microphone sound good. A great preamp will make a microphone sound great and an incredible preamp will make your microphone sound incredible.

What does that say about your microphone 🤨

Your microphone will only sound as good as the preamp it is feeding. So having at least one great mic preamp is pretty important or else you’re not getting the best from your microphone.

It’s like when you read ‘All you need is an ’. That can be true… if it’s connected to a great mic pre 🏆

At freq shop we’re blessed with 34 awesome mic preamps and they all bring something special to the table.

Here’s a killer tip for you!

Deciding when and how to use a click track can be difficult. It’s an art in itself. Some songs need that steady poised feel that a click track provides. Sometimes playing freely is necessary to create that unmistakeable human feel!

But what happens when you need a little bit of both worlds?

Using an external hardware metronome routed into my DAW and fed to the musicians' headphones, I can ‘play’ the click freely like an instrument. Bringing it in and out in specific sections.

Before discovering this trick i'd simply record the song in sections… What a buzzkill… urgh… I feel that the music has got to flow and chopping the performance up like that is often unnatural and counter productive to getting that magic through the speakers.

Check out the metronome. Not without its quirks… Nut still it is by far the best metronome on the market.

Try this trick 🙌🏼

It’s all about versatility.

We designed our control room to be comfortable for large bands, groups and ensembles. We wanted the perfect drum room while remaining versatile enough for other applications like strings, choirs and lead vocals. The room has a ‘medium’ decay and tone. Warm and smooth and with a cozy and inspiring vibe.

Over the years we’ve worked diligently on the acoustic treatment of this room, taming that nasty 3K harshness while keeping the room open and natural. It sounds as warm as it looks! Panels and irregular surfaces cover the room evenly yet sparingly. 30% of the room has been covered in panels.

We keep a whole bunch of moveable panels, baffles and packing blankets on hand whenever we need to control things further 💪🏼

Perfect for all applications and just awesome to be in. Come check out Freq Shop for yourself

Freq shop is home to a multitude of spaces with different sounds and tones.

We built a booth / dead space for all those situation where we need a tight and intimate sound - dry & with very little sustain and ambience.

Our booth is perfect for vocals, cabinets, and we’ve even squeezed a drummer into the booth on a handful of occasions.

Versatility is key in a recording studio and ever got you covered ✌🏼

Over the years I’ve grown more and more fond of working in headphones.

I do the bulk of my work in speakers but I’ve learned through experience that spending some time in headphones is critical for me to deliver my best work.

I love my open back Sennheiser HD-650’s. They sound spectacular and since they are open backed I can wear them all day long and carry on conversation easily while I work without taking them off. They’ve also got a very very long cable on them so I can do my regular dance around the room while artists perform. Lol.

I have also become quite fond of my Beats By Dr. Dre ear buds. Compact, great frequency extension and detail. Of course the low end is really big. Really awesome when I’m on the go!

Ultimately any headphones can be useful and like speakers, as long as you spend time getting to know them any model can work a treat!

Some things are just nicer in pairs. Like our custom made 1176 limiters.

A great choice for a 1st compressor, there is nothing these bad boys don’t sound 👌🏻 on.

Bass, vocals, guitars, piano, drums (close and far)… YES YES YES

But my favourite trick will sharpen up your close drum mics sharper than Wayne Gretsky’s ice skates!

You want the Slowest attack with the fastest release and dial it in till you’re getting 2-3 db of gain reduction. Be careful because too much limiting will not be good… 🔪 🔪 🔪

Try this trick on your kick and snare. Thank me later 🤘🏼

A little bit more about our control room? Sure!

Honing in on great sonics in our control room has been a priority since we built the studio. Every year making incremental refinements to the acoustics and monitoring. Adjustments to speaker positioning, height and distance from walls can impact the listening environment. Ditto for the listening position! Don’t forget about that!

On the hardware side we’ve worked our way through a handful of speakers, amplifiers and monitoring controllers in search of better sonics. Our Focal Twin6be’s and Yamaha Ns10s are a perfect compliment that are both excellent tracking and mixing speakers 🤘🏼

We’re very happy with the progress we’ve made over the years in order to build a trustworthy Control room! Now it’s your turn to come have a listen 👂

Welcome to Freq Shop’s control room!

A room we designed for awesome sonics housed within a cocoon of comfort! But the most important feature for us was to have plenty of space for artists and large bands.

We are very happy with what we’ve achieved and continue to refine the space with frequent acoustic adjustments. Our gear list is also always in a state transition as we aim to equip ourselves with the most useful and great sounding kit.

But… you’ll need to stand inside Freq Shop to really FEEL it! Let me tell you… it feels instantly comfortable, creatively stimulating and sounds superb!

We don’t usually pair a guitar amp with a bass amp when tracking BASS, but maybe should do it more often 😂

We recently recorded three new songs for and this was our bass setup…

Avalon u5 DI
Line 6 Bass Amp
Greenwood Guitar Amp
Sans Amp Pedal

The DI captures a clean signal that gets further processed ITB with an amp sim (we used an Ampeg SVT), the bass amp captures the low end and the guitar amp is all midrange.

Midrange is vital to a great bass sound that cuts in a rock mix and our trusty Greenwood Amp came to the rescue!!!

We got some serious bass tones and couldn’t be happier!!!

Freq Shop recently collaborated with five yards sessions for a string of live performance recordings. Our first release features the talented NAÏMA FRANK 🔥🔥🔥

Her music offers a nice blend of pop, soul, r&b and hip hop. Suffice it to say, Naima absolutely owned these performances. We recorded 5 songs in all and had a blast in the process.

We packed up our mobile rig and did some location recording for the shoot. The visuals are minty!!! Shot by Charleswood Films and mixed by Derek Orsi.
