CRYPTO INVESTMENT SCAMS
We continue to receive complaints about crypto investment scams and people can lose lots of money to this type of scam. In November 2023 Lloyds Bank Group reported that "the average amount lost by each victim of a crypto investment scam is £10,741". Lloyds Bank found that the most common age range for crypto scam victims is 25 to 34 and investors typically make an average of three payments before they realise they have been scammed.
Please remember the advice from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
"You should be prepared to lose all the money you invest in crypto. But if you do decide to invest, it’s important to do your own thorough research. You can read more about crypto and investing in crypto from InvestSmart."
To learn more about InvestSmart, how crypto scams work and how to protect yourself read the FCA guide.

ACTION FRAUD WARNING - WHATS APP SCAM
Action Fraud says this scam "often begins when a member of the group receives a WhatsApp audio call from the fraudster, pretending or claiming to be another member of the group."
The aim of the scam appears to be a takeover of the victim's
WhatsApp account to enable the scammer to access the victim’s contacts, who will then be messaged asking them to transfer money urgently as they are in desperate need of help.
A WhatsApp spokesperson told Action Fraud
“All personal messages sent on WhatsApp are protected by end-to-end encryption, but we can all play a role in keeping our accounts safe.
We recommend that all users set up two-step verification for added security and advise people never to share their six-digit PIN code with others, not even with friends or family.
If you receive a suspicious message (even if you think you know who it’s from), calling or requesting a voice-note is the fastest and simplest way to check that someone is who they say they are.”
According to Action Fraud the top three most frequently targeted group chat types are Islamic religious groups, Christian religious groups and work chats."

New Scam Alert from Middlesbrough Trading Standards

CAR WARRANTY SCAM
We got details of this scam from a Facebook message sent to us, so many thanks to the consumer who told us about it. He was called by a fraudster who told him that there was an issue with his car warranty. This was a surprise to the consumer as he doesn't currently own a car. The caller didn't provide a business name but the telephone number used was 01295 804266.
The caller did ask the consumer for his vehicle registration number, which is a red flag if they are calling to discuss a problem with an existing car warranty as they should have this information.
As the consumer did not continue with the call we don't know what information the scammer was after but it probably would include some personal and financial information which the scammers could then use to defraud the intended victim.
Remember if you are cold called about a warranty for a car or mobile phone or house appliance the caller is asking you to enter into an insurance contract. Businesses who arrange and provide insurance must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). So if you get a call like this don't agree to any payment until you have the name of the business and have checked they are FCA approved.
