Both the NSW and the Commonwealth government are using the Doherty Institute's modelling to judge the appropriateness of restrictions after vaccination targets. While I don't agree with the more pro-lockdown view of the article, the analysis of the modelling is instructive.

Gladys acknowledged, however, that “If you read the Doherty Institute report, that is based on the premise of 30 to 40 cases in relation to all the things you can do”.

Considering we are at over 400 cases per day, unless cases drop to that 30-40 daily number, the restrictions and lockdowns are here to stay.

"If this spread threatened the health system, state governments would have to impose restrictions such as lockdowns to get it under control, as the plan acknowledges. In fact, the Doherty modelling says in this scenario, lockdowns would need to be in place for 20 to 40 per cent of the time, depending on the age profile of the vaccinated population."

Unless case numbers go down, we will be in this position for a while..

The national cabinet should not be pulling a trigger too early and consign Australia to even more lockdowns and a higher number of COVID-19 deaths.

🔴🔴Lockdowns until December? Ida is right that citizens have lost their rights during this pandemic.

I understand the people who argue that lockdowns are necessary to fight COVID-19 i.e. that the problem justifies these measures. It seems like a logical argument to make. While there is a debate regarding how serious the actual disease is, particularly the Delta variant, the problem with this argument is that historically, every time a government has taken civil rights away from citizens, there has been a 'good' reason.

McGowan (WA) Premier has recently said that lockdowns will continue even after the targeted vaccination rate has been achieved to pursue a zero-Covid approach. There is no reason to suggest continued lockdowns won't happen in other states. There may even be continued restrictions or other lockdowns in the future for other reasons, like 'reducing emissions.'

As Milton Friedman said, "there is nothing more permanent than a temporary government program."

If the virus is here to stay, which it likely is, given that vaccines don't fully prevent you from catching or spreading the virus, it would seem lockdowns are here to stay too.

There are those who don't understand why I, and many others, protested in the city several weeks ago against lockdowns. It may be seen as selfish and childish.

However, I think in 2022 or 2023, when the vaccination target has been reached, and you find yourself locked in your house with no end to lockdown in sight, it may become clearer.

You will look back on the events of 2020/21 and wonder how the government so easily was able to assume control of your movement, your speech and your work status etc. By then, while it won't be too late, it will be a much harder battle to fight when our civil rights have already been conceded to the government and health bureaucrats.

Time will tell. I'm hoping that I'm wrong and that in November, at least in NSW, everything will be open and we can move on with our lives as normal and live with the level of COVID in the community.

I would ask you not to take your freedom lightly. Freedom is an anomaly in the historical scheme of things, and it's a miracle that we had nations in the west that were founded on limiting the power of governments, rather than limiting the power of citizens. Maybe the miracle can't last forever, but its at least worth fighting for now.

It would be utterly unbearable.
