Visitors to the Cathedral will note our ongoing restoration work, which includes the cleaning and conservation of the Guastavino tile on the great domed ceiling of the Crossing. Work has just begun on deinstalling scaffolding throughout the Crossing. We anticipate this deinstallation should be complete by the end of November.

Many thanks for your patience and understanding as this work continues to unfold! For more info on Cathedral conservation work, visit our blog at stjohndivine.org/news.

Getty presents Memnon read by the Classical Theatre of Harlem, an online live play-reading taking place via Zoom on Monday, October 24, 2022, at 8:00 pm ET. RSVP for free at https://getty.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SBxmF5_hQ-6sgJWp4eEb2g

Memnon tells the story of the besieged city of Troy which, in its darkest hour, calls on a powerful Ethiopian king to help repel the Greeks. This Homeric episode, once a staple of the ancient Greek and Roman epic tradition, had been forgotten—until now. Memnon is written by Will Power and directed by The Classical Theatre of Harlem's Associate Artistic Director Carl Cofield.

WHY IS MEMNON AN IMPORTANT TALE TO TELL, ESPECIALLY AT THIS MOMENT?
There is a pantheon of classic stories that are widely known and retold. Memnon has somehow flown under the radar, never receiving an artistic investigation despite his incredible relevance and the epic scope of his story. Memnon is an ancient artifact, a treasure that fits right into our current global reckoning in relation to art, race, and equity, and will become an essential part of the conversation about how myths shape our collective narratives.

THE CAST INCLUDES:
Carson Elrod (Achilles), Joel de la Fuente (Priam and Nestor),Tim Nicolai (Polydamas and Antilochus), Britney Nicole Simpson (Helen), Donathan Walters (Memnon).

The Classical Theatre of Harlems programs are supported, in part, by the Doctorow Foundation, Bay and Paul Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Lucille Lortel Foundation, Doctorow Foundation, UMEZ, the Ford Foundation, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
