TALC.. the Talking And Laughing Company.. blue-eyed soul heroes, yacht rock vagabonds, The Doobies meet The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band.. In the early 2000s, session players and musical geniuses and came together to form what started out as a tongue in cheek take on the music of Zapp, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates and co, performing in seedy late night working men’s clubs and joined on stage by fellow squires for hire with such pseudonyms as Bobby Fame, Noir Le Blanche and, who could forget, Simply J**z.
On hearing their first demo, the tale of a forbidden human-computer love between woman and machine, in the shape of the original version of Modern Sleepover (with thanks to ) we knew we had do share their shamelessly juvenile yet sophisticated musical joy with the world, and before long, the song was released on 10-inches of wax, and was getting props from the likes of and
The debut album, Sit Down Think, dropped in 2006, and was followed by the publican’s concept album, Licenced Premises Lifestyle, two years later. In between, as part of the set up for their sophomore LP, Talc dropped the second part of the love story between computer and owner - Modern Sleepover Part 2 - subtitled Robot’s Return.
Many years later the track was picked up by none other than for his DJ Kicks compilation, and that kick started another wave of popularity for this sadly now defunct soft rock outfit. We still managed to squeeze more Talc joy out on Wah Wah 45s though, just a couple of years ago, with previously Japan-only track De Gui Ding being released on 12-inches of wax alongside reworks from and both parts of the Modern Sleepover story.
