Ginkgo Journal Bridging the gap between eastern and western culture. The leaf of the Ginkgo was a symbol of friendship to whom he dedicated the poem to.

Ginkgo comes from Ginkgo Biloba, a tree known for its unique fan-shaped leaves that turn golden yellow in the fall. It is also the title of a poem written by Goethe, published in his work 'West–östlicher Divan (West-Eastern Diwan),’ which was inspired by the Persian poet Hafez. Goethe’s inspiration to write ‘Ginkgo Biloba' is the impetus of this journal to catalogue people, places, and stories that are bridging the gap between eastern and western culture.

The history of Kaga Yuzen dyeing dates back 500 years, to when Umezome (plain dyeing) was the distinctive dyeing technique of the Kaga district. Kaga Yuzen uses five basic colors, know to them as Kaga-gosai: indigo, crimson, ocher, dark green and royal purple, and the designs depict beautiful elements of nature such as flowers, birds and landscapes.

This kimono in particular focuses on Japanese maple leaves (Momiji) gently floating across water in beautiful shades of purple, lavender and green.

Kunihiko Yuyama (湯山邦彦) is an anime director who has been involved with many of the products of the Pokémon anime. He is also an illustrator for the TCG.

Yuyama is one of the founding members of OLM, the animation studio that produces the Pokémon anime. He began his career in the 1970s as an in-between artist on the original Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers in North America). Other than Pokémon, his most noteworthy work is likely the original Magical Princess Minky Momo series, on which he worked with original Pokémon anime head writer Takeshi Shudō.

Junior Parker’s 1971 album ‘You Don’t Have to be Black to Love the Blues,’ designed by Daniel Cooper-Bey of the Groove Merchant label, features a young Asian boy about to bite down a watermelon. This album cover was inspired by the popular Levy’s Jewish Rye Bread ad campaign from the 1960’s ‘You Don’t Have to be Jewish to Love Levy’s,’ created by Doyle Dane Berbach. The Levy’s ad featured a cast of non-Jewish people biting down and enjoying a sandwich on rye bread.

For day 9 we are featuring the queen of contemporary City Pop and AOR, 一十三十一 (Hitomitoi). Even though she debuted in 2004, she came to international popularity with her 2012 neo-City Pop album City Dive, featuring her hit Dive. The song we are featuring today,Catch Me in the Snow, comes from her 2014 album ‘Snowbank Social Club.’ Snowbank Social Club is a concept album revolving around themes of winter in Japan, with her extended music video taking place at a ski resort.

As of recent Hitomitoi has worked closely with Kashif, Dorian and LUVRAW, who have helped define her sound. She has worked with the cult favorite band Ryusenkei on the soundtrack to the 2020 Japanese drama タリオ 復讐代行の2人 (Revenge Agents Duo).

For Day 2 we are featuring Sweet Rumors by Remedios, from the classic romance film Love Letter (1995). The film is about Hiroko Watanabe, played by singer and actress Miho Nakayama, and her journey on finding closure after her fiancé Itsuki Fujii tragically died in a mountain climbing accident. On the two-year anniversary of her fiancé’s death Hiroko decides to write a letter to where Itsuki used to live, and surprisingly gets a response.

The film was a hit in Japan upon release and also became widely popular in South Korea, where it was one of the first Japanese films to be shown in Korea since World War II.

The soundtrack, composed by Reimy Horikawa but better known as Remedios, created a beautiful and nostalgic soundtrack about someone remembering and also finding closure in a loved one that has passed away too soon. Sweet Rumors is one of the soundtrack’s iconic songs and used in the trailers.
