Europe might not be the first place you'd associate with large wild cats, but its diverse landscapes—forests, mountains, and islands—are home to various felines that have adapted to coexist with humans. The Iberian lynx, the continent's largest cat, lives in Spain, where we track the lives of a male and female as they communicate through scent marks and eventually mate, raising their young in an abandoned barn. In the Canary Islands, domestic cats turn wild during mating season; we follow a red female who leaves her harbor-view home to find mates, only to encounter a volcanic eruption on her journey back. Additionally, the European wildcat, once common but now diminished due to hunting and habitat loss, survives in the forests of eastern France. A female wildcat raises her three kittens, relying on instinct rather than training to develop their hunting skills, while conservation efforts aim to reduce hybridization with domestic cats.

Cliff swallows in Nebraska have shorter wings, female turtles in Chesapeake Bay are growing larger, and two finch species in the Galapagos are merging into one. Urban peregrine falcons are adapting to hunt at night due to city lights. These changes highlight how human impact has shifted evolution. Desert creatures endure extreme heat and arid conditions, relying on speed for survival, with tiger beetles sprinting at the equivalent of 500 miles per hour, caracals leaping six feet to catch weaverbirds, and the fastest chameleon hunting on the desert floor. Meanwhile, beneath the seemingly peaceful black lagoon lies a murky world of twisted mangrove roots and seagrass beds, where predators like the spear-armed mantis shrimp, lightning-fast eels, and bull sharks create a frenzy. In the dark underworld of forests, danger lurks everywhere: Africa's largest cobra is outpaced by the giant bullfrog, big brown bats use sonar to swiftly capture wax moths, and the world's second-fastest cat springs ten feet into the air for its prey. When death strikes in these realms, it does so at lightning speed.

At the start of November in Madagascar, the island’s lizards and lemurs have a busy day. On the central mountains and in the east coast rainforests, the rainy season is well under way. Ring-tailed lemurs, indri, and bamboo lemurs travel to find a seasonal supply of fruit and fresh leaves. Numerous species of chameleon feast on bugs that are also plentiful at this time. But on the arid western and southern coasts the rainy season is slow to get going. Finding daily water and avoiding predators like the fosa at the drinking holes is the priority here.

Elephants in the wild are constantly on the move. They have roaming corridors that can extend for thousands of kilometers and are part of the family legacy. But as human populations have grown, our species has built cities, villages, farms and conservancies, which have cut off some of the elephant's traditional corridors.

In this episode we'll look at the work that Lewa is doing to try and restore some of that territory to the elephants from Mt, Kenya to Samburu National Park. On the flip side, we'll see how Lewa has created an elephant exclusion zone to try and restore a damaged ecosystem. Both jobs require monitoring their movements by use of radio tracking collars to better understand their needs and to see if they're returning to their natural corridors.
