DAMN°magazine A magazine on contemporary culture. www.damnmagazine.net Well that’s the general idea anyway.

DAMn° is an independent publication with an open-minded view on the interchangeable worlds of design, architecture and art. Exploring the blurred boundaries of creative forms and expressions, it is about people, products and places, tradition and originality, improvisation and inventiveness. The support of contributors from across the world offers a diverse and expansive mix of inquisitive and wil

ful stories - creative responses to contemporary culture with a distinctive visual and textual attitude. DAMn°’s starting point is where most magazines stop, bringing editorial content beyond hype or conventional academic debate. Unafraid to link the personal and the political, the economic and the emotional, the stylistic and the social, DAMn° juxtaposes beauty and decay with an approach that is both thoughtful and playful.

1. Sarah Smolders: A Space Begins, With Speaking at M Leuven .leuven / 15 March 2024 - 1 September 2024 / Leuven, BE

Sarah Smolders A Space Begins, With Speaking at M Leuven combines for the first time a new spatial intervention with residues from past site-specific exhibitions. Smolders uses those residues as her own spatial alphabet to read and scale M-spaces.

2. Alias at M Leuven .leuven / 15 March 2024 - 1 September 2024 / Leuven, BE

The group show Alias at M Leuven explores the theme of fictional artistry. The exhibition assembles some 80 works from national and international public and private collections to highlight this recent phenomenon in art history. Piece by piece, the works illustrate the strategies that contemporary artists use to merge fiction and reality.

zaterdag 20.04.2024
@ HET ARSENAAL
Brusselsesteenweg 602 - 9050 Gent

85.000 stenen maken uit afval van de Gentenaar? Hoe zot wijs is dat! Design Museum Gent doet the Right DING.

DAMN Magazine invites you to the COLLECTIBLE - the international fair dedicated to 21st century collectible design. It will open for its 7th edition in the Vanderborght Building, Brussels from 7 to 10 March 2024.

👉 The exhibition, celebrating 20 Years of DAMN, "Les Tabourtes du Terroir" will be presented during the fair.

Collectible is one of the most important design platforms globally for both established and emerging galleries, and design studios. With a heavy emphasis on materiality as a language to express a vision, the work presented explores the link between conceptualization and realization, where ideas manifest into tangible forms.

Every issue we ask one of our writers to read us the article they wrote. You can find it on our DAMN°magazine Soundcloud. Listen to the FULL piece on Dam Lan by Iona Lowe

Welcome to the real-life technicolour universe of Dan Lam. Her painted polyurethane foam sculptures, many of them donning spikes, take the form of blobs that appear to drip and dribble and clump and coalesce, in a sort of melted-candy jamboree — their intensely cheery palette outrightly defying their peculiarity. Are you suitably perplexed?

There is arguably nothing more important in a space than the lighting. For the product section of the printed version of DAMN°86 we have selected 33 objects linked to the concept of light in some form. We feature the best floor, suspension and table lamps by iconic brands such as Flos Flos, Artemide, Vibia, &Tradition, but also candles and candle holders designed by the likes of Lola Montes Schnabel, or commissioned by non-profit House of Today and made by Lebanese designers in collaboration with artisans. You will also find fireplaces by Metalfire and luminous objects that are transparent, iridescent, let the light filter through or reflect it. They are not all products in the strictest sense, but also research projects from design schools and practices. It’s a curation that doesn't focus necessarily on what's new, but what's genuinely innovative and high-quality. Online we share a brief sneak peak of what we selected:

FRAGILE lamp from Marset

On the last pages of every issue of DAMN° we bring you a selection of products in digestible bite-sized bits curated by our Research & Realities editors. These objects have caught their eyes with an original design, an innovative material and/or a fascinating story. In the we focused on the theme of Light as something that defines colour, shine, transparency, and mood. Let us shed a light on one of the pieces from our selection:

Fascinated by timeless design, Jaume Ramírez was interested in creating an archetypal table lamp in which the lampshade distributes light in all directions. The result is a mix of geometric shapes. A cone and a sphere are arranged to hold a cylinder that emits ambient light from below.

Design Museum Gent is organising a fringe programme ‘Do The Right DING’ on the occasion of the production of the ‘Gent Waste Brick for DING’ by BC materials that will take place at the Arsenaal in Gent, an inspiring old railway site. Together with the Design Museum Gent I invited some 15 designers and artists to come to the site for a few days to work and experiment with the (waste) material of the ‘Gent Waste Brick for DING’.
Designers are asked to create an object/project/concept with the material. By doing so, the Design Museum Ghent wants to stimulate ‘experimentation’ and thus investigate whether the material can be used for other applications. The results - objects or studies - are exhibited in the atelier on the site.

OPENING SATURDAY 20/04, from 12am onwards, lectures start at 4pm, vernissage at 7.30 pm

Participating artists, designers & collectives:
Yoel Pytowski, Hamza Abu Ayyash, Thomas Noceto + Cinzia Romanin, Liesbeth Henderickx, Bram Vanderbeke, Conrad Willems, Anne Ausloos + Jeroen van Westen, Elias Van Orshaegen, Joe Sterck, Sharon Van Overmeiren, Lochness Gent, Aurélien Veyrat, Aequo design, Tom Schoonhoven, Hugo Peels
