No Dia do Cantor, não podemos deixar de mencionar nosso Rei do Soul, que nos presenteou com várias canções marcadas pela potência vocal que era a marca registrada de Tim Maia. Qual música de sua discografia você gravaria com ele? Uma decisão bem difícil.

The Chimayó History Museum contains artifacts and photos from the early twentieth century that provide insights into life in a traditional Spanish-speaking community in northern New Mexico in the early twentieth century. With the sound of running water, a cottonwood ten feet in diameter, and trees laden with ripe apricots, it is located in an oasis in a dry land. Chimayó continues to be known for its weaving.

¡Una belleza de logo! El concepto que encierran estas dos palabras, Amada Comunidad, no hubiera calado sin una grafica acorde. Amado o amada como nombre es una palabra que se refiere a algo o a alguien que es apreciado y cercano a nuestros corazones. De allí el corazón que irradia tanto significado.
Amado o amada como adjetivo describe el sentimiento intenso que podemos tener sobre esa estimada cosa o persona. En la conferencia de ese año 2024, la Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) quiso concentrarse en dos cosas de nuestra región: en su geografía y en su espacio cultural.
Sagrados como la Roca Judaculla que los Cheroqui esculpieron y que es tan venerada. Así mismo, valoramos grandemente los vegetales en conserva producto de los jardines de nuestros abuelos.
La ASA se enorgullece de tener identidades distintas que son y que continuarán siendo parte de nuestra dinámica región: Negros, Nativos, Gente de Color y LGBTQ, entre otros. “Mantenemos unidas estas culturas que residen en estas montañas. Nos satisface tener una bella vista desde Water Rock K**b, después de haber hecho una caminata por esta montaña. Igualmente encontramos aspectos conflictivos que complican las cosas en estas montañas al ver cómo las industrias extractivas existentes han dejado su marca. Los Apalaches no son una región simple, como pueden ser otras regiones. Por ello nos preocupamos por las complicaciones que se puedan presentar dentro de ella”.
La verdad es que este maravilloso logo dice mucho sobre la apertura de las gentes de la Cordillera Apalache.

NC band Também () brings the musical stylings of Brazil to Boonerang!

Pianist and founding Também member Ingrid Nora Knight is a Boonie by heritage. A grad of Watauga High and an alum of App State, Knight has an educational background in jazz studies and piano performance, and worked as a teach and accompanist at ASU for a number of years, until life led her down the mountain to the NC Triangle. From there, she was part of forming Também in 2018.

Também infuses elements of Brazilian and American music traditions to create a multifaceted sound. Dreamy vocals, distinctive percussive syncopation, rich bass lines, and melodies carried on the keys and flute – all these elements come together for a true cultural experience. Audiences are transported to Rio de Janeiro – one minute relaxing to smooth bossa nova, the next up on their feet with high-energy samba.

“Também” is a Portuguese word that roughly translates to “as well.” Not only does this reflect the multiple musical influences of the group, but it speaks to an element of inclusion that is exemplified in the Boonerang spirit. In 2019, Também made its mark in the High Country with performances across Boone, Beech Mountain, and Valle Crucis and we think it’s time for a warm welcome back! Catch that “as well” attitude with Também at Boonerang in June!

🇪🇸El sueño de Yndiana Montes Fogelquist! Participar en un workshop sobre desarrollo sostenible y agricultura de primer nivel, muy pronto se hará realidad. Ella nos ha obsequiado este video tan sugestivo que hizo por iniciativa propia para promover dicho evento. “Siempre he admirado la manera en que el Departamento de Desarrollo Sostenible de Appalachian State University ha escogido su facultad y planificado sus acciones dentro y fuera de los confines universitarios. Que haya un convenio de esta magnitud entre dicho departamento y su homólogo en la Universidad de Ghana me parece maravilloso,” dijo entusiasmada. 🇺🇸The Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture Workshop will take place on Monday, May 22nd at the Valle Crucis Conference Center 11:45am-4:45pm, in partnership with Appalachian State University and the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Ghana. As part of the development of Appalachian State University's partnership with the University for Development Studies, Ghana, and funded through a U.S. Embassy University Partnerships' Initiative grant, six distinguished guests and partners from Ghana May 14th-24th. This workshop is part of co-curricular development central to the partnership in three core areas: food security and sustainable agriculture; conflict, development communication, and extractivism. Registration will begin at 11:45am in Johnson Hall and then lunch will be served at the Valle Crucis Conference Center cafeteria.
