The COP 15 Wetlands Conference has roared into life in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe with delegates expressing the important role wetlands play in sustaining ecological health, biodiversity, and climate resilience. COP 15 is being held under the theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future”, and the conference will spotlight the value of wetlands and create new avenues for collaborative conservation to protect and restore the wetland ecosystems. Data from the Ramsar Convention Secretariat shows that wetlands cover just 6% of the Earth’s surface, yet 37% have been lost since 1971, while freshwater species populations have declined by 84% since 1970.

The 16 June student uprising epitomizes the role played by the young people in the struggle to unshackle southern Africa from colonial rule and apartheid. The youth were at the forefront in the struggle for independence in all countries in southern Africa.

On 16 June 1976, more than 20 000 Soweto school children staged a peaceful protest against the imposition of Afrikaans as the language of instruction for black pupils and against the discrimination they suffered under the inferior “Bantu education” curriculum.

The courage of the Soweto students in June 1976 is today commemorated by a national holiday in South Africa, Youth Day, which honours all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against apartheid and Bantu education.
