WHY?

MISINFORMATION is the new normal. A fleeting look at most family and friends group chats on WhatsApp is enough to tell you that every day is April Fool's Day. Fake news is venomous and as you might be aware, the amount of fake information going rounds have increased exponentially, be in Whatsapp, Twitter, etc. In an effort to restrain this, Fake Facts is an initiative to rectify the malicious propaganda, infotainment, opinion. The content aimed at is both, political and apolitical in nature.

Fake news and sophisticated disinformation campaigns are especially problematic in democratic systems, and there is growing debate on how to address these issues without undermining the benefits of digital media. In order to maintain an open, democratic system, it is important that government, business, and consumers work together to solve these problems.

One of the best ways for the public to protect themselves from this network of sophisticated lies is to become aware. Individual people can do this by following a diversity of people and perspectives. Relying upon a small number of like-minded news sources limits the range of material available to people and increases the odds they may fall victim to hoaxes or false rumors. This method is not entirely fool-proof, but it increases the odds of hearing well-balanced and diverse viewpoints. Further, in the online world, readers and viewers should be skeptical about news sources. In the rush to encourage clicks, many online outlets resort to misleading or sensationalised headlines.

In the humdrum of life, it is understandable not to be vigilant all the time and it becomes tough, with the pace everybody is consuming information, to discern between right and wrong. For this, two helpline numbers have been set-up. If you, want any clarifications on a particular piece of information or any Whatsapp forwards that you receive, please do e-mail at [email protected].
