Hamas reject latest hostage deal proposal

Away from Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Hamas has rejected the latest proposal for a deal to return Israeli hostages.

A statement from the prime minister's office said that Israel will continue to pursue its objectives in Gaza "with full force".

It said the rejection of the proposals showed that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, did not want a deal and was trying to exploit tensions with Iran and bring about a regional escalation of the conflict.

More than 300 drones and missiles fired on Israel by Iran - IDF spokesman

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari has just given an update after the attack on Israel by Iran.

He said more than 300 drones and missiles were fired by Iran overnight, 99% of which were intercepted.

He said the Nevatim Air Base was struck but its "capabilities were not blunted".

No fatalities were reported but a 10-year-old girl was injured by shrapnel, Mr Hagari said. 

He continued to say that the situation is still unfolding and aircraft are patrolling the skies. 

"Iran pushed the Middle East towards escalation. We will do whatever is necessary," Mr Hagari said.

The launches of drones and missiles also didn't just come from Iran, Mr Hagari added, but also Iraq and Yemen. 

He said in recent hours "dozens of rockets" were launched from Lebanon into northern Israel, and in response the IDF struck a number of military structures in Lebanon.

Former footballer Joe Thompson has revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time.

The midfielder, who came through Manchester United's youth academy, has revealed he has stage four Hodgkin lymphoma, which has spread to his lungs.

Thompson was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 and recovered - before the cancer returned four years later.

BREAKING: Court denies Nnamdi Kanu bail, gives fresh order

The Federal High Court siting in Abuja has refused to grant bail to the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The court, however, ordered accelerated hearing of the case involved in the embattled IPOB leader over his terrorism-related charges.

Kanu, who was brought to the court on Tuesday, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021.

Chaos in senate as they argue over alleged N500m received by senior Senators, N3trn Budget padding

Things got pretty chaotic in the Senate on Tuesday as the Point of Order raised by Senator Olamilekan Adeola, who chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, turned into a heated exchange when Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe from Cross River North escalated the situation.

Senator Olamilekan Adeola, who represents APC Ogun West, raised a point of order in response to an allegation made by Senator Abdul Ningi, who is from PDP Bauchi Central and also the former Senate Deputy Leader and Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.

Ningi had raised concerns about a possible N3 trillion budget padding in the N28.7 trillion 2024 Appropriation Act.

According to him, the budget passed by the National Assembly for the 2024 fiscal year is N25 trillion, but the one being implemented by the Presidency is N28.7 trillion.

The senators were divided on the matter, and they took turns expressing their views on the Senate floor. But here’s where it gets even more interesting: Senator Jarigbe, who is from the PDP, revealed that some senators allegedly received N500 million each, but he claimed that he didn’t receive any of it.

“All of us are culpable. Some so-called Senior Senators here got 500M Naira each from the 2024 Budget, I am a ranking Senator and I didn’t get anything. No Senator has a right to accuse Senator Ningi,” Jarigbe said.

Meanwhile, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio tried to restore calmness on the floor.

Recall that in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (Hausa Service) on Saturday, Senator Ningi said that the budget being implemented by the Presidency is N28.7tn, whereas the one approved by the National Assembly for the 2024 fiscal year is N25tn.

In the interview, Senator Ningi was cited as saying, “For the first time in Nigerian history, today we are operating two different budgets. One budget was approved by the National Assembly and signed by President Bola Tinubu and the one was implemented by the presidency.”

He stated, “The one approved by us is ₦25trn while the one operating by the Government is ₦28tn.

Nasarawa Senator, Abubakar Sodang is dead

A chieftain of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, Senator Abubakar Danso Sodangi is dead.

DAILY POST learnt that the former senator, who represented Nasarawa West for 12 years in the Nigerian Senate, breathed his last on Sunday at the age of 70.

Sodangi served as the Chairman of the Campaign Council for the re-election of Governor Abdullahi Sule in 2023.

The circumstances surrounding his passing are sketchy as of the time of this report.

Akpabio’s remarks at Wigwe’s burial were childish and unnecessary – PDP chieftain

Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has criticized the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for launching a political attack on Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State during the burial of Herbert Wigwe, the late CEO of Access Bank Holdings, his wife, Chizoba, and their first son, chizzy

Governor Fubara, in his tribute, questioned the political struggles and asked, “What’s all these struggles about? You want to kill, bury, what’s it all about?”

In response, Akpabio mentioned his 2006 bid to become deputy governor, emphasizing that the office had no money, and he wanted it despite that.

Ugochinyere described Akpabio’s remarks as childish and unnecessary, questioning why the Senate President would turn a moment of mourning into a political jamboree.

The lawmaker urged the Senate President to be mindful of his statements and avoid turning solemn occasions into political attacks.

He said: “The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio should stop meddling in opposition politics.

“Last month, Akpabio, at a function in the Tai Local Government area of the state, asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, to look for someone from Ogoni extraction to succeed state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, in 2027.

“Today, he’s responding to a remark by the Governor that has nothing to do with him. The opposition is urging the Senate president to be mindful of his utterances.
