To promote our CALAMITY AWARENESS AND PREPAREDNESS FOR AN EVER READY COMMUNITY Advocacy Program by using social media as our weapon to create a Calamity Resilient Community Through Activity Continuity Management among social media users. We would like to share some ways and action about Flood preparedness...
What is flood?
It is a natural event or occurrence where a piece of land (or area) that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged. Flood, a common phenomenon that our country faces. A sudden rise of sea level that results in huge water overflow. A revenge made by Mother Nature to human’s selfish acts and violations. A disaster which serves as the key for some illnesses to harm us. A disaster that may ruin not just our houses and necessities but also our lives and morality. Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Flooding often occurs following a hurricane, thawing snow, or several days of sustained rain. Flash floods occur suddenly, due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area. When floods happen in an area that people live, the watt the water carries along objects like cars, houses, bridges, many heavy objects, and even people.
Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines, triggering heavy rains that cause widespread flooding and landslides, particularly in East Samar and Leyte provinces.
Know the Difference!
A flood/flash flood WATCH means a flood or flash flood is possible.
A flood/flash flood WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon. TAKE IMMEDIATE PRECAUTIONS!
How can we avoid them?
1. Introduce better flood warning system
2. Modify homes and businesses to help them withstand floods
3. Construct buildings above flood levels
4. Tackle climate change
5. Increase spending on flood and defenses
6. Protect wetlands and introduce plant trees strategically
7. Restore rivers
8. Introduce water storage area
9. Avoid walking or driving
10. Do not drive over bridges
11. Just 6 inches moving water can knock you down and one foot of moving water can sweep our vehicle away
12. Move immediately to higher ground
13. If floodwaters rise around your car but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move out to higher ground
14. Do not leave the car and enter moving water
15. Avoid camping along streams, rivers, and creeks
16. Be aware of areas where flood waters have receded for debris
17. Flood waters often erode roads and walkways
18. Don’t attempt to drive through areas that are still flooded
19. Avoid standing water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines
