To promote our CALAMITY AWARENESS AND PREPAREDNESS FOR AN EVER READY COMMUNITY Advocacy Program by using social media as our weapon to create a Calamity Resilient Community Through Activity Continuity Management among social media users. We would like to share some ways and action about Flood preparedness...

What is flood?

It is a natural event or occurrence where a piece of land (or area) that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged. Flood, a common phenomenon that our country faces. A sudden rise of sea level that results in huge water overflow. A revenge made by Mother Nature to human’s selfish acts and violations. A disaster which serves as the key for some illnesses to harm us. A disaster that may ruin not just our houses and necessities but also our lives and morality. Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Flooding often occurs following a hurricane, thawing snow, or several days of sustained rain. Flash floods occur suddenly, due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area. When floods happen in an area that people live, the watt the water carries along objects like cars, houses, bridges, many heavy objects, and even people.

Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines, triggering heavy rains that cause widespread flooding and landslides, particularly in East Samar and Leyte provinces.

Know the Difference!
A flood/flash flood WATCH means a flood or flash flood is possible.
A flood/flash flood WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon. TAKE IMMEDIATE PRECAUTIONS!

How can we avoid them?
1. Introduce better flood warning system
2. Modify homes and businesses to help them withstand floods
3. Construct buildings above flood levels
4. Tackle climate change
5. Increase spending on flood and defenses
6. Protect wetlands and introduce plant trees strategically
7. Restore rivers
8. Introduce water storage area
9. Avoid walking or driving
10. Do not drive over bridges
11. Just 6 inches moving water can knock you down and one foot of moving water can sweep our vehicle away
12. Move immediately to higher ground
13. If floodwaters rise around your car but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move out to higher ground
14. Do not leave the car and enter moving water
15. Avoid camping along streams, rivers, and creeks
16. Be aware of areas where flood waters have receded for debris
17. Flood waters often erode roads and walkways
18. Don’t attempt to drive through areas that are still flooded
19. Avoid standing water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines

To promote our DISASTER INFORMATION FOR COMMUNITY WIDE AWARENESS Advocacy Program in using social media as an instrument of building earthquake resilience through community strengthening and consciousness among social media netizens. We would like to share some knowledge about Earthquake preparedness....

Can you think of something more dangerous than earthquake? It seems that all other kinds of disasters are no less hazardous, but earthquake…Earthquake is merciless; it takes away everything standing on its way, including people’s lives.
Nobody knows when a earthquake would occur. It is something that is least expected by all of us, You may escape other kinds of other calamity but if earthquake occurs, there is no way out. It is necessary for all of us for the sake of our own lives along with our families, neighborhoods to carry out all the prevention methods we can think of in order to escape the dangerous moment that earthquake would gave to us.
‘YOU fall to the ground, unable to keep standing. You hear a booming sound. You hear screams from people inside their homes. You hear breaking glasses. Telephone and power poles sway violently. Then the power goes off. In front of you, the village road is heaving, as if you are riding waves. The strong ground shaking goes on for 50 seconds. It is the longest 50 seconds of your life.”
No, it is not a teaser from another doomsday Hollywood film meant to titillate moviegoers’ imagination to cash in big time come screening day. It is how scientists picture the possible scenario should the impending “Big One” hit the country.
These events are often unexpected by their very nature, leaving little time, if any, to prepare. That is why it is so important to put time into planning and preparation long before the disaster strikes.
Introduction of the four phases of emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, perhaps the place that individuals can make the biggest difference in their own state of resiliency and survival of a disaster is in the preparedness phase. Being prepared before a disaster strikes makes sense yet many people fail to take even simple, precautionary steps to reduce the consequences of destruction and mayhem produced by natural events such as earthquakes.
It is said that life can be over in 50 seconds when the Big One happens. Now is a good time to prepare for it. Let’s hope, though, that it will not occur. But being prepared is always worth it. Hence, we should all also focus on this.

In line with our community based output in Araling Panlipunan, we would like to share some friendly reminders during typhoons!

Storms aren’t just scary because of their powerful winds and the strong rain they bring; the chaos of a typhoon is also a prime time for injury, and conditions may make disease more likely. So first and foremost, your safety and that of your nearest and dearest should be your priority.

Be safe friends!

In partial fulfillment of our project PreDuPost Disaster Action Program, we would like to share our knowledge about fire prevention through this social media campaign....

Nobody knows when a fire would go ablaze. It is something that is least expected by all of us, yet it takes place at hundreds of places every single day, because of which hundreds and thousands of lives are affected. It is necessary for all of us for the sake of our own lives along with our families, neighborhoods, classmates to carry out all the prevention methods we can think of in order to ignore ablaze fires.

"Fire do not take holidays" This quote shows that all of us leaving the cares of our homes and schools, thinking we would only have fun; are not safe. Fire could attack us anytime whenever we want it or not. And as the cliché "It is better to prevent than to cure" goes by, everybody should be very careful when using matches, lighters, and other inflammable objects and substances at home or in any places like schools.

Supplying your houses with fire safety tools is one of the most effective ways to prevent fire. Nowadays, there are tons of information about fire safety engineering – the usage of scientific and engineering rules to prevent fires and protect people when there’s a danger.

People get hurt not only because of flame, smoke is harmful to human organism as well. That’s why it’s important to understand the value of smoke management systems. And above all this, fire alarms save a lot of lives too.

Can you think of something more dangerous than fire? It seems that all other kinds of disasters are no less hazardous, but fire…Fire is merciless; it takes away everything standing on its way, including people’s lives. This is why you have to be extremely careful with everything associated with fire.

*Carelessness is the biggest cause of fire...*
