For What It's Earth Environment, climate and sustainability podcast.

We make big issues bite-sized, explaining the science behind what’s going on in the world, and exploring the things that we can do to help out.

Ep. 83: Forget Me Not with author Sophie Pavelle Nature!

“The culture in which we have talked about climate change and conservation has been slightly doomy and gloomy… But your brain is so much more receptive to all kinds of information when you’re in a better state of mind.”

The wonderful science communicator Sophie Pavelle chats all things Forget Me Not (her utterly superb debut book) and the role of JOY in combating the climate crisis.

🎧 It’s ! And we’re popping an extra episode in your feed today to celebrate. On world bog day, we bow down to the awesomeness of this underrated habitat, which is fantastic at quietly getting on with an immense amount of carbon sequestration as well as supporting its own army of specialist plants and animals.

About a year and a half ago we recorded an episode on bogs, so it feels like the perfect time to resurface it and for you to find out exactly why we think bogs are super cool. So, if you missed it before, head over to your podcast platform for For What It’s Earth, on BOGS!

❄️🐧New podcast (or, at least, one that we forgot to post about on Facebook when it came out...) We're looking at Antarctica!

Can we protect it, or survive without it? Joined by fellow podcaster Ryan Dalton from Into The Wild Podcast for this ep, so you can expect a touch of nonsense as well as the usual eco and programming.

🌊 🌱 New episode: Save the seagrass, save ourselves?

Take a dive with us into one of the most exciting marine habitats on the planet - and it's often found just a few splashes away from the coast. Seagrass is thought to capture carbon 35 TIMES faster than tropical rainforests, yet it covers less than 1% of the seafloor and we're losing it globally, rapidly.

They're also vital habitats for marine life and provide more ecosystem services than we can count (almost). But, In the UK, we've lost more than 90% of our seagrass habitat. What can we do about that, you ask? Listen to find out!

Search For What It's Earth on your podcast platform or click below to listen:

We're also chatting about the great work that Project Seagrass and LIFE Recreation Remedies are doing to restore our seagrass meadows.

🎧 New episode: Bats! 🦇 (PLUS Lloyd pops back in from paternity leave!)

Far more than mysterious nighttime creatures of folklore, we dig into why macro bats and micro bats (like this brown long-eared bat here) are fascinating AND important, and what can be done to stop the loss of them from our countryside in the UK.

Also, swipe to see the bat-pollinated flower that Emma mentions in the episode!

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when we set this up and published our first episode (on bees). It’s become a space for joy, for learning, for better understanding the world around us and human impact on it, for finding tools to become more planet-positive and for celebrating individual sustainability journeys, no matter at which point they start.

Above all, it (and you awesome souls) give us hope. So today’s allotment sweater might look a little familiar!

🎧 New episode: Saving Fish and Top Pond Tips, With Wildlife Cameraman Jack Perks Wildlife Media! 🐟

This week Emma takes a dive into something she knows very little about; why fish in the UK are friends, the threats they're under, the fascinating projects working to restore their populations, and why we should all love a lamprey (…nope).

Joining her to head upstream is wildlife cameraman, author, and podcaster (and almost one of the dullest men in Britain...), Jack Perks. Plus, plenty of fantastic advice for anyone keen to put a pond in their garden to support wildlife. 🐸

We’re super excited to bring you this episode! Today Emma is joined by brilliant marine biologist, lecturer and science communicator Dr Steve Simpson, who we both studied with during our undergraduate degrees at University of Exeter, to chat about coral reefs, climate change, eco grief and hope!

You might have seen him on BBC’s Blue Planet II, but we still think this is probably one of his scicomm career highlights….

🎧✨ Conservation in Africa! 🐘🐆 In the first episode of 2022, Emma has travels south (virtually) to find out what it's really like to live in the African bush and work as a conservationist protecting and restoring areas of land in protected national parks.

What does 'rewilding' look like in Malawi? What is the issue with neocolonialism in conservation? How does the conservation sector differ in the UK from Africa? Rosie has spent the last 10 years as a bush guide and conservationist, specialising in tracking and monitoring predator populations. Plus, she's just published her first book 'Girl of the Wild'!

The only logical conclusion here, is that Shell listened to our episode on the proposed Cambo oilfield.... right?

This is an exciting, huge blow for the project! And, more than likely partly due to the heavy campaigning from the environmental movement against the project and pressure mounting on Shell, resulting in them probably needing a 'good' PR move. The development of this North Sea oilfield is by no means over, but this is a big step in that direction.

🎃WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR PUMPKIN TOMORROW?

In the UK we throw away enough on to make a bowl of soup for EVERYONE in the country. Sending these perfectly nutritious and delicious gourds to landfill contributes to a huge amount of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) being released as they all break down.

Here are some planet-positive things you can do instead 👆

Note: Any parts of your pumpkin left outside should be removed as soon as they start to go mouldy, to prevent wildlife picking up any diseases or health problems. At that point pop in your compost or food waste bin!

All this and more, YES, MORE ideas for an eco friendly Halloween on the podcast.

💡 New Episode: Light Pollution! 🔦 What’s up with bulbs, brightness and blinding nature?

We’re turning or attention today to a kind of pollution that you can’t just pick up and pop in the bin. Light pollution can occur in many forms and can, of course, have a great many impacts on all that it touches - including our plant and animal chums.

Join us to find out how our artificial illuminations are impacting moths, bats and trees, why we’re second-guessing switching street lights to energy-efficient LEDs, and why residents in California once freaked out when they saw the Milky Way.
