Here we see troops of the 199th loading onto choppers of the 190th Assault Helicopter Company. The nose art lets us known these slicks are those of the "Spartans". Just a guess, but this could be from the Cambodian Incursion. I can almost feel the adrenaline rush. I'd be pretty calm until we neared an LZ. Hoping it would be cold. I knew to unass the bird as soon as the doorgunner gave us the word.

Late April of '69, B Co. 3/12 inf. As I remember, three times while I was in Vietnam we worked alongside scout dogs. This time we had the dog and handler for a couple of days, west of Highway 14 between Pleiku and Kontum. The handler told me the dog's effectiveness was compromised by the fact that he had to contend with the scents of the unfamiliar men in our platoon. The dog was alerting quite often, with no positive result. I walked point much of the time during this mission as I was in charge of our Cheiu Hoi Scout, Lu. The area was loaded with bunkers, but we never did come across enemy soldiers. One memory of this mission was coming to a tree with words carved into its trunk. The message, "American Go Home." Our Kit Carson scout translated the carving for us. In the photo, to the right is Fred Bowers from Midland Michigan, who served as my squad leader during that time." The clearing most likely had been a Montagnard Village, or field. The US Army had probably relocated these folks to what were called secure hamlets.

The average age of a Huey pilot (UH-1) during the Vietnam War was relatively young. Most Huey pilots were in their early to mid-20s. Many of them were commissioned officers who had completed flight training, often entering service right after college or Officer Candidate School (OCS).

The typical age range for helicopter crewmen was between 19 and 25 years old. These young men faced significant responsibilities and dangers, conducting various missions from troop transport to medical evacuations under hostile conditions.
