Some words for today. These words have hit a cord as I continue my healing journey. All the feels in these words. Celebrate your worth. Reclaim your worth. Know your worth.

‘I’m not going to ask you to kiss me,
neither ask for forgiveness when I believe that you have done wrong,
or that you have made a mistake.
Nor am I going to ask you to hug me when I need it the most,
or to invite me to dinner on our anniversary.
I’m not going to ask you to go around the world to live new experiences, much less ask you to give me your hand when we are in that city.
I’m not going to ask you to tell me how pretty I am, even if it’s a lie or that you write me anything nice.
Nor will I ask you to call me to tell me
how your day was or tell me you miss me.
I’m not going to ask you to thank me for everything I do for you, for you to worry about me when my moods are down and of course I will not ask you to support me in my decisions.
I’m not going to ask you to listen to me when I have a thousand
stories to tell you.
I’m not going to ask you to do anything, not even to stay by my side forever.
Because if I have to ask you,
I do not want it anymore.’ - Frida Kahlo

11 days. 264 hours. 15840 hours. 950400 seconds. I’ve been quiet. I’ve attempted to write something many times but my voice was silent. So I paused and went inward. Which is what I’ve been practicing for the last 18 months. Social distancing became a term that I’d hear every level of politician use. I’ve been social distancing for the last 18 months.

So this time has been very strange for me. I’m mostly calm with bouts of panic. But I silence the news feed, put away my phone, turn off my computer and I go inward. Ive tried to meditate but overwhelmed with all the support available online. I’ve just sat in my own silence.

Social distancing became something I did to heal after my separation. Healing from the idea of how I thought life would be, healing from being in a relationship that didn’t serve me for a long time, helping from old trauma wounds that were inflicted far before this relationship even starting. I’m still healing.

I have been reading that lungs hold grief.

By definition grief means:
‘deep mental anguish’,
‘a source or cause of deep mental anguish’ ‘annoyance or frustration’
‘trouble or difficulty’

We all hold grief deep in our bodies. Releasing it is not easy. It stays buried. Burying grief protects us - mainly our minds. Keeping it buried can lead to side effects that show up in different ways - chronic complaining, health issues, depression...

This time has been triggering for me. Hearing other people’s grief, pain and complaining about what’s happening in the world right now. I wanted to run away for the first few days. Then I felt frozen. Now I feels it’s opened me up again to turn inward and heal some grief I’ve buried deep inside me moment after moment. That’s been my motto for the last 18 months go inward and now is not the time to change my course. What’s coming up for you?

I received this email the other day from my yoga studio. I had a a little chuckle to myself. The story I was telling myself was untrue. ‘Oh big deal 25 classes I should have been to more!’

I came back to the email a few hours later. I reread the email. I sat with it. I could tell myself you should of went more. There’s nothing to be proud of. That’s not an achievement. In that moment I changed the story I was telling myself.

Sure I could have gone more. What’s more important is that I showed up for mySELF 25 times in the last 4 months. That’s 25 more times than I had shown up for myself in the 4 months before. And that’s the achievement. I began making myself a priority. I began walking through of my FEAR. I began saying YES to my healing. I opened mySELF to feeling good.

This is the win. This is the achievement. This is the point.

104 years ago women were granted the right to vote in some provinces in Canada.

52 years ago ‘divorce’ became legal in Canada.

43 years ago Federal Pay Equity legislation was passed.

35 years ago Indigenous women who married a non-indigenous person had their treaty and Aboriginal rights restored.

32 years ago abortion became truly legal in Canada.

20 years ago women were able take 12 months paid leave after becoming a parent.

Today we observe International Women’s day. A day to raise awareness to eliminate discrimination against women. For me it’s not just about discrimination because this is a human right not just a woman’s right. For me this day is about eradicating inequities towards women and looking deeper at the inequities of various demographic intersectionality on women. It’s about removing barriers for women to fully participate in the workforce. It’s about changing the narrative and how we speak about and to women. It’s about recognizing we are s*xual beings but we ARE NOT s*x objects. It’s about how we nurture the next generation of men. It’s about being unapologetically ourselves and carrying zero shame about this. It’s about governments creating policies and legislation that removes barriers for all genders and for driving towards changing the narrative.

In 104 years we’ve come far but not far enough. I won’t be here to see what our world is like in 104 years. My hope is that the work that this generation and the next is doing will eliminate the need to have such a day for the all of the generations after.

Happy International Women’s Day.

design YOUR destiny Speaker Spotlight: Natalia Ria
Embodying Inner Freedom

Natalia empowers women travelling on healing journeys from co-dependence to self-belonging. As a recovered people-pleaser, Natalia creates gateways for healing the self-abandonment wound and building a Home within the Self. Through feminine embodiment practices, breathwork, connection, touch and the cyclical power of the female body, Natalia helps women heal their inner child, reconnect with their aliveness and re-discover the profound joy of receiving. The sacred intention for her work is to end the legacy of emotional starvation, shame spirals and cycles of depletion experienced by women who come from lineages that carry the emotional abandonment wound - a debilitating lack of emotional nurturing.

The picture in this photo brings up so much for me - emotions, values, my essence. I got it during my first trip to a country I fell in love with literally - the people, the climate, the views, the life, the food, the ocean, the history. I bought it from a vendor at the resort I attended for a wedding. I had the person I purchased it from take it off the wood frame and I carefully rolled it up in my suitcase to bring it back to Canada. When I arrived home I brought it to a framer to find out it would require a custom made frame! I remember picking it up from the framer when it was ready - I was so happy. I hung it in my apartment living room and it brought me so much joy.

It’s stayed with me on my journey these last 13 years - moved with me to a few apartments, packed safely in storage for a couple of years and hung above my bed.

Recently, I took it down. I was tempted to put it away, maybe even give it away. It now reminded me of the ending of my marriage, my heartbreak, pain, empty hopes, trauma and being alone. I hesitated. I made excuses as to why I needed to keep it. Reminding myself of the joy it once brought.

One morning while cleaning my room I was about to put it ‘away’ out of sight, tuck it away in my closet. I opened the closest. I tucked it inside the left side. And I had this wave of emotion come over me and I quickly took it out again. In that moment I looked at it again and thought oh my - this artwork is a reflection of my current journey - to return to my essence.

It represents my beliefs and a return to my long held values. I now see Matriarchs (the original harvesters of the land), the feminine, the returning of my voice, my journey to love all of me, to turn inward to do the deep healing, to sit in my feelings, to walk through fear and be myself. Life is about shifting and evolving just as this artwork has for me. Has anything you’ve had in your life shifted and evolved with you?

I was buried. I was lost. I felt unworthy. I didn’t know the woman in the mirror. I was sad. I was broken. I had no energy. I was angry. I felt sorry for myself. I wanted to run. I wanted it to all stop. I wanted to be loved. I wanted my soul back.

That was three years ago. Today I still struggle. I’m doing the inner healing and nurturing. My days are light. My nights are brighter. I’m loving myself more and more everyday. Today my seeds are starting to grow.

Relationships are fu***ng hard. They take energy. A lot of fu***ng energy. Never believe anyone If they ever tell you it’s all on you. It’s not. It’s on you to go inward and do your work NOT their work. Inner work can be really painful. Moving with that pain and sitting in that pain can help you to grow your seeds. As we move into the spring equinox I encourage you to go inward to the depths of your being and find the seeds that you need to nurture.
