We noticed that Deborah Adele Author posted an article that we all need to read. She says, "This tendency to only see what we know how to see most often produces a defensive stance when our beliefs are challenged. When we truly see how deeply this pattern sits in us, it becomes understandable how our country has become polarized to the extent of extreme incivility. Our beliefs feel that personal to us. How do we learn to separate reality from our own beliefs and perspectives, discomforts and judgements, needs and idealism, and our reactions and defensiveness?" I recently received an email from a self-proclaimed “fan” of my two books.  She told me she loved the yamas and niyamas and was enjoying the kleshas, that is until I mentioned Ruth Bader Ginsb…

I've been having some fun doing a cover photoshoot to show Deborah Adele Author's two books side by side. Look at the incredible use each book has had. My personal copies show 15 years of reading, note taking, teaching, and sharing for The Yamas & Niyamas. And after just one reading group /book club with Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute, my copy of The Kleshas is showing the love too. I've included a contrast-compare pic of the books: new vs. well-loved. What does your copy look like?

Deborah shares her story of writing the Kleshas book, including how taking a bad fall on the Superior Hiking Trail, which resulted in surgery and a cast on her arm, was actually a gift. As she asked herself questions such as, "Where do my beliefs come from?" and "Can I let other people have their beliefs?" she realized that the Kleshas were keeping her mind in a cast. Her mind was as rigid in its belief system as the cast on her arm was. As her arm healed, and the writing of the book came along, she was able to practice her "Gap Time" reactions and examine where her own beliefs came from. In this book, Deborah invites us to examine our own beliefs, to develop our gap time, to still our minds, to become free from reacting to the Kleshas, and to become sourced from within.

When we are free from the Kleshas it doesn't mean that they stop existing. The Kleshas are always present. But what happens is that by working with Practice & Nonattachment, we become free from identifying with the roaming tendencies of the mind (free from the effects of the Kleshas). We become free from being dependent on external sources to make us happy. We develop "Gap Time" - the space to respond rather than react. We become sourced from within.

When we are free from the Kleshas it doesn't mean that they stop existing. The Kleshas are always present. But what happens is that by working with Practice...

Practice asks us to focus and train our minds to find that innate stillness that the mind craves. Nonattachment asks us to dis-identify with the swirling tendencies of the Kleshas. We all long for wholeness, harmony, and completeness and Practice & Nonattachment are the Power that get us there.

To free our minds, Patanjali gives us the practice of "Practice and Nonattachment." Practice asks us to focus and train our minds to find that innate stillne...

The Kleshas and The Mind!
Yoga is defined as, "Mastery over the roaming tendencies of the mind." What are roaming tendencies? Entanglement in the Kleshas, of course! Yoga believes that the innate state of the mind is tranquility. The feeling of having unruly thoughts, or a lack of focus is because our minds are swirling around the Kleshas. Thankfully, we can learn to still our minds and stop identifying with the Kleshas. The Mind is both entangled in the Kleshas, and the Platform that can free us from the Kleshas. Liberation from the Kleshas happens in the Mind.

Final Thoughts on The Kleshas - - - AND - - - Introducing the Mind!
Once we've learned about the five Kleshas, and recognized the role they play in our lives, we might feel depressed or discouraged. But Deborah assures us that the Yogis have provided a path to freedom from the whims of the Kleshas. Knowing how we are entangled is the start of the path toward greater happiness, power of choice, power of discernment, and eventually, peace.

Once we've learned about the five Kleshas, and recognized the role they play in our lives, we might feel depressed or discouraged. But Deborah assures us tha...

Abhinivesha has us afraid to live and afraid to die; we're afraid of change, but we want things to be different. Sounds depressing, but knowledge and awareness create freedom. Thankfully, Deborah Adele Author teaches us a path out of the Kleshas in her new book.

Abhinivesha, the fifth Klesha, translates as fear of death / loss / change. It's the final step to smallness along the Klesha path from Avidya to Asmita to R...

Deborah Adele Author explains how Dvesha and Raga are a dynamic duo of diminishing ourselves into smaller and smaller selves and spaces. While Raga had us only doing things that make us feel good, Dvesha is even trickier, making us avoid things we don't like.

Dvesha, the fourth Klesha, is a dynamic duo with Raga. While Raga has us seeking to feel good, Dvesha has us seeking to avoid feeling bad. Dvesha accommodate...

We're joined by Deborah Adele Author again as she explains Raga. Raga, the third Klesha, has us seeking to feel good. It can be thought of as our personal agenda for happiness. We all have our preferences - and there is nothing wrong with that! But when we find that we can only be happy when things "go our way," we have made ourselves small. We have limited ourselves in our experiencing and enjoying life.

Raga, the third Klesha, has us seeking to feel good. It can be thought of as our personal agenda for happiness. We all have our preferences - and there is no...

Hi Folks - Here's Klesha #2: Asmita (video 4 of 12). Asmita is how we define ourselves and all the roles we've absorbed through family and cultural expectations. Deborah Adele Author explains how Asmita has us doing the "should's" of our life instead of finding and following the "love's" of our life.

Asmita, the second Klesha, has us giving definition to who we think we are. Asmita helps us have a sense of identity but it also limits us by making us think...
