I cannot tell you how it was,
But this I know: it came to pass
Upon a bright and sunny day
When May was young; ah, pleasant May!
As yet the poppies were not born
Between the blades of tender corn;
The last egg had not hatched as yet,
Nor any bird foregone its mate …

- Christina Rossetti

But Oh, 'Tis the merry month of May,
Be merry and glad and stay.

When a language dies, people often follow a path of cultural assimilation, where they adopt the dominant language and culture of the surrounding society. This can happen gradually, as successive generations of speakers become bilingual and then lose proficiency in their traditional language. In some cases, people may also migrate to areas where their language is more widely spoken, leading to a loss of cultural identity and language heritage.

As a language dies, people may also experience a sense of disconnection from their cultural heritage and history. The loss of a language can lead to the loss of traditional stories, myths, and cultural practices, as well as the erosion of a community’s sense of identity and belonging.

In some cases, people may also experience a sense of grief and loss when a language dies, as it can be a significant part of their cultural and personal identity. The loss of a language can also have economic and social implications, as it can affect the ability of a community to communicate effectively and participate fully in society.

Public Domain books on myths, legends and stories of the Philippines were written in English. None written in Filipino language, at least from where I already searched. 🥹

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

A setback met translating one of the 'All Time Favorites' of my heart. We are not big time enough to publish. Not even one yet. But, oh well... not any reason to not love.

Information on L. M. Montgomery has practically become an industry on its own: multiple volumes of her Journals, her letters, and many works on Anne, and the author have been published. Many organizations to celebrate her works, have their own websites.

Lucy Maud Montgomery is perhaps best known as the author of the Anne of Green Gables series. The Prophet
On Marriage

Kahlil Gibran

Then Almitra spoke again and said, And what of Marriage master?

And he answered saying:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

Tis The Set Of The Sail
(Or -- One Ship Sails East)
Ella Wheeler Wilcox
1855 (Janesville) – 1919

But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and way, and away,
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.

Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Alice in Wonderland
Of Whiting:
“They have their tails in their mouths —and they’re all over crumbs.”

Why?
Perhaps they have small frying pans or serving plates. Who knows?

Dialog follows:

"Oh, tungkol sa asuhos," sabi ng Kunwang Pagong, "sila—siyempre nakita mo na sila?"
“Oh, as to the whiting,” said the Mock Turtle, “they—you’ve seen them, of course?”
"Oo," sabi ni Alice, "madalas ko na silang nakikita sa hapun—" nagmamadali niyang pinigilan ang sarili.
“Yes,” said Alice, “I’ve often seen them at dinn—” she checked herself hastily.
"Hindi ko alam kung nasaan ang Hapun," sabi ng Kunwang Pagong, "ngunit kung madalas mo na silang makita, siyempre alam mo kung ano sila."
“I don’t know where Dinn may be,” said the Mock Turtle, “but if you’ve seen them so often, of course you know what they’re like.”
"Naniniwala ako," nag-iisip na sagot ni Alice. "May mga buntot sila sa kanilang mga bibig*—at lahat sila ay nasa mga mumo."
“I believe so,” Alice replied thoughtfully. “They have their tails in their mouths —and they’re all over crumbs.”

Translating the Classic Book Alice in Wonderland to Filipino, I learned a lot of things.

Did you know the name Mary Ann (I love this name and a name to few beautiful people I know) had some other meanings in the past, and perhaps even presently?

Mary Ann – From Gardner: “According to Roger Green, Mary Ann was at the time a British euphemism for ‘servant girl.’ … Mary Anne Paragon was the dishonest servant who took care of David Copperfield’s house. … Slang dictionaries give other meanings to Mary Ann that were current in Carroll’s day. A dressmaker’s dress stand was called a Mary Ann. Later the name became attached to women who attacked sweatshop owners. Still later it became a vulgar term for sodomites. Before the French Revolution Mary Anne was a generic term for secret republican organizations, as well as a slang term for the guillotine.” - Alice in Wonderland Glossary of Terms
for Madge Miller’s adaptation from Lewis Carroll by Aaron C. Thomas

I don't like to sound like a moralist but let's call something by its proper name. It's very unfortunate for the beautiful names to be associated with something else, like Karen and the now popular euphemism for busybodies in the Philippines: Maritess.

The Duchess of Wonderland might wag her tongue and say: 'Never try to call someone not to be otherwise than what it might appear to everyone that what it was or might have been was not otherwise than what it had been would have appeared to others to be otherwise.'

That's my twist on the original ‘Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.’

Imagine you're in a court of justice, now as a witness while previously being sentenced for ex*****on! You would have lost your shoes too!😆

Watching Alice in Wonderland or looking at Mad Hatter's photos, I used to wonder, what's with the hat with "10/6"?

Well, the numbers mean "ten shillings and sixpence" in old English money.

Now it makes sense. The Hatter used to carry hats to sell, and even the hat he wears on his head is meant to be sold - so the top hat style is ten shillings and sixpence.

But why Mad? In the 19th century, hatters used mercury to soften fur and wool to make felt for hats, leading to 'hatters shakes' and other physical and mental problems. Wearing a price tag on a hat was one indication of erratic behavior in Lewis Carroll's tale.

But do you know there's Mad Hatter's Day?

In 1986, a group of computer programmers in Boulder, Colorado noticed the "date" on the Hatter's hat and petitioned for it to become a national holiday. Mad Hatter Day was founded in 1986.

Oh dear, aren't you glad, Miss Faith, it's not a dime and a nickel?😆
