The octothorpe, commonly known today as the hashtag ( #), has an interesting history. Originally, the symbol emerged from the abbreviation of the Latin word "libra pondo," which means "pound weight." Over time, "lb" was written with a horizontal line through the letters to indicate the abbreviation, eventually evolving into the # symbol.

The name "octothorpe" was coined in the 1960s by Bell Labs employees. It combines "octo" (referring to the eight points or edges of the symbol) and "thorpe," which is believed to honor Olympian Jim Thorpe, though the exact reason for this is unclear.

The symbol gained widespread use on telephone keypads, representing a number or code. Its modern resurgence came with the advent of social media, particularly when Twitter (now X) adopted it in 2007. Chris Messina, a social media expert, suggested using the hashtag to group related tweets, and it quickly became a popular way to categorize and search for topics across various social media platforms.

Today, the hashtag is a powerful tool for communication, and organizing content.

"Baby, forgive me."

“Sambayanang Pilipino, patawarin ako sa kasalanang ipinaratang ninyo sa akin. Pilipino, pinatay ng kapwa Pilipino”

Regardless of his last statements, he was convicted as a ra**st, a crime that shook the nation and sparked intense debate on justice and the death penalty.

Leo Echegaray's case remains one of Philippine history's most significant and controversial legal events. Convicted in 1994 for the heinous crime of repeatedly ra**ng his 10-year-old stepdaughter, Echegaray became the first person executed by lethal injection after the death penalty was reinstated in the Philippines in 1993. His ex*****on on February 5, 1999, at the New Bilibid Prison, marked a pivotal moment that ignited intense national and international debates about the death penalty's morality, effectiveness, and the potential for judicial errors. The outcry and discussions surrounding his case played a crucial role in the eventual abolition of the death penalty in the Philippines in 2006. Echegaray's ex*****on is a stark reminder of the complex issues surrounding capital punishment and the justice system.

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH.🐾❤️

Happy Tuesday PAWS friends! This month we’d like to put the spotlight on our older shelter animals so that you can get to know them better and they can finally get a chance to shine!🌟

Being older doesn’t make them any less lovable or adoptable because our more senior rescues tend to be more gentle, relaxed, and loving just the same.❤️ All our featured seniors are also adoptable or available for fostering and would love to meet you when you visit PAWS!

We’re starting off our series with our gentle mama dog Menchie who is a beautiful 8-year-old aspin rescued inside the UP DIliman campus along with her puppies who have all been adopted already.

Those who have met Menchie when PAWS holds morning walks at UP Town Center know that this dog has a calming and huggable presence that will definitely lessen your stress at the end of each long day.

Can’t adopt but want to help Menchie love her best life? Please consider fostering her for a limited time so she can finally experience what it feels like to live in a real home! Or help donate for her food and medical needs by donating in cash or in kind via Gcash or through any of the bank accounts listed at www.paws.org.ph.

Sweet mama Menchie wishes you all a lovely day ahead! 🌸🩷🐕🐈
