For the past two days, I was immersed in an outer body, transcendent, spiritual CREATIVE EXPERIENCE facilitated by South African Artist Nhlanhla Mahlangu Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. I have never been in a space (but always wanted to) where I was surrounded by other creatives who had multidisciplinary gifts and talents - which was truly powerful and stoic to be in that room. I have learned so much more about myself and the stories I want to tell as a Filmmaker while I am still processing this weekend🤯🤯🤯. I have been overwhelmed by His Spirit and my creative juices have been heighten supernaturally because of this experience.

So, I just want to thank Valerie Brown for seeing the Bigger picture, understanding the importance that artists play in our communities and making the financial invest to make this Residency Program come to life for us!

Special thanks to Jairo Ontiveros, as I stated to you - You have birth something powerful for the Creatives in South Florida and this was just a taste of the impact your programming will do for artists HERE! From the deepest part of my heart - Thank you for inviting me! This truly meant A LOT TO ME💜🙏🏾

And to the facilitators and Nhlanhla Mahlangu, thank you for the imparting and sharing your culture, South African history and the untold stories of our ancestors fighting in World War 1 in such a painful but beautiful way!

Last year, God blessed me with an opportunity of a lifetime! I got a call to work on an production with none other than ! who was shooting a TV series based out of my home town , Miami! I said YES!

During my 6 months working on this show in the Locations Department, I learned sooooo much more about production on so many levels - I worked with ALL departments, executive producers, directors, vendors and more!

But most importantly, I got to see and experience, for myself, Issa Rae being intentional about having a crew who reflects the diversity we will see on July 21st on HBO Max!

Issa for the many times I awardkly bumped into you in the bathroom, this was what I really wanted to tell you face to face:

"Thank you for being an intentional storyteller! Becuase of that, you opened the door for a Haitian girl from Liberty to work on a major, high budget TV Show, which allowed me to open doors for many people around me. The experience I have garnered from working on the show was life changing and a game changer for my career in Film and Television! I know you have a lot on your shoulders to bare and carry but God will continue to elevate you and your level of creativity on another level becuase of your heart and passion to truly include those who don't normally get a change to Direct, write, produce or work on a set of this magnitude and pressure. I LOVE YOU QUEEN AND I CAN'T WAIT TO WORK WITH YOU AGAIN - God Bless You Boo 💜💜🙏🏾🙏🏾

God blessed me with a baby girl 18 years ago and since she entered my life (through 😜🤪), it has been nothing but joy watching her grow into a beautiful young lady.

We are excited to announce that our very own M. Denise Simmons will lead an industry workshop and discussion for aspiring youth filmmakers and rising content creators here in South Florida. In partnership with URGENT, Inc., a community development organization focusing on empowering young minds in order to transform communities, M. Denise will address key topics in media making and film production. These topics will include understanding the power of media, industry professionalism, production set etiquette, relationship building and how to become a creator for change.

M. Denise will be joined by another fierce filmmaker from Florida, Joanne Rouza. Joanne will also share insight into the industry and how to use the media to empower.

Both M.Denise Simmons Joanne Rouza are currently crewing on Issa Rae’s upcoming HBO Max series.

This event will include breakfast and lunch and will be hosted at the CIC in Miami.

Leading a masterclass titled, “5 Senses of Social Justice Filmmaking: Laying Down the Foundation,” Denise was able to share her passion with others.

is a state-wide, not-for-profit entertainment production association that provides a leadership role in Florida’s film, TV, production & digital media/tech industry.

Denise will sit as a BIPOC filmmaker and will continue fight for inclusive sets, increased training and opportunities for minority creatives and the return of filming and incentive programs back to Broward County.
