Featherston based artist Dave Edwards (aka Dave Black/Fiffdimension) is the real deal. A genuinely original voice in the New Zealand underground. Incredibly hard working and prolific he has released dozens of small private press releases over the last 25 years. Roping in collaborators wherever he goes his work is at once eclectic and singular ranging from Beefheartesque free jazz beat poetry ('Cafes in Conversation' or 'Ornery Return Cravings' ), harsh noise ('Wealth and Riches' ) to ambient tape collage ('Lake Rotoiti to Fox Glacier' ); all sharing a unique 'Dave-ness'...

What is that Dave-ness? There's a busy brain in there certainly, most explicitly manifested in the wordy songwriting and the 100-ideas-at-once approach to playing that he somehow manages to pull off in his busiest songs ('Mouth of the Caveman' ), but also the capacity for meditative beauty ('Stromatolites' ). There is a certain embodied awkwardness that infuses all this work, transmuted advantageous into a unique approach to phrasing and voice.

Having spent a lot of time with Dave Edwards music my main takeaway has to be the recognition of a strong and original creative vision and the same kind of commitment to that vision that has sustained the prolific output of outsider artists elsewhere with whom we may be more familiar. As with similar artists Daves art has been too long ignored and misunderstood. Surely its time to change this?

As a footnote:
Full disclosure Dave now plays bass in The Troubled Times with myself and drummer David Heath and so I have gotten to know him and the range of his music an awful lot better over the last couple of years. We had played on bills together since 2001 or so in Wellington and elsewhere and at one stage I was so impressed by a live set I saw him do with his outfit The Winter that I insisted on releasing a cdr of the show on PseudoArcana (memorably and amusingly dissed by Amanda Palmer as part of her spat with The Winters drummer Simon Sweetman), but it is only recently that I have become cognisant of the full range of work that he has done. When Dave suggested that he would like to do a 25 year anniversary compilation I offered to help in any way I could. (This involved some help with final track selection, mastering and print layout etc).

November’s selection includes music made with the wind and water of Jeju, and music made with robots and cardboard boxes.

Stephen Clover's 'seht' project has been a consistent font of cerebral ambient electronica since its debut sometime in the early noughties. With his impeccable attention to timbric detail and the erudition and wit of his sample choices his albums have the tendency to tumble one gently into a fugue state. Try putting one on as background music while doing some household chore and I can virtually guarantee by the end of it you'll be sitting somewhere staring into space and not much work will have gotten done.
'Another (Looped) Sunday' is sehts first official release in a couple of years and with its explicit celluloid references lands one in a zone of washed out colour, a nostalgia in and of the everlasting moment.

Big news!: I'm curating a new series of CDs by various well known (and some not so well known) artists from the NZ experimental underground scene. The linking factor of the releases is that they all share the same title- 'Another Sunday'. The first of these are now back from the plant and ready for release. So its a year since Dave Edwards and myself (Antony Milton) first got together for a jam. We've been getting together every 2 or 3 weeks since and have since been joined by David Heath on drums.
To celebrate heres a collection of tracks all recorded at a Sunday session exactly one year on from that first session. As you will hear the addition of drums has pushed us in a more rocky direction but hopefully we haven't entirely lost our weird small town vibe..
