What do you know about the Warrior Princess, Moremi Ajasoro?
Beautiful and brave Moremi Ajasoro, was a member of the royal family by marriage in the 12th century.
She hailed from Offa and was married to the then king of Ile-ife, of the family of Emperor Oduduwa, the founding father of the Yoruba tribe.
At the time, ile-Ife was said to have been at war with a neighbor tribe known to them as the forest people (Igbo people although historians say they are not related to the present day Igbo people).
According to history, Ife people were being enslaved by the Igbo people, causing hatred between the tribes.
In desperation to save her people, Moremi offered anything she had in sacrifice to the spirit of the river, Esimirin, just so she could discover the secret of her enemies powers.
She is said to have been taken into captivity by the Igbo people and married to their ruler as his anointed queen.
After discovering the secret to the strength of her husbands army, she escaped to Ile-Ife and revealed it to her people, who went on to defeat the Igbo’s in battle.
After the war, Moremi returned to her husband, Oramiyan of Ife, and later of Oyo. She was immediately reinstated as his princess consort.
Moremi later sacrificed her son, Olurogbo, in fulfillment of her pledge to Esimirin before she embarked on her journey to Igbo land, as that was what it asked for after she returned to its shrine.
The Edi festival which is celebrated in Oyo state is said to have begun in celebration of the sacrifice the princess made for the Yoruba people.
To this day, a number of places in Yoruba land have been named after her, such as one of the female hostels in the University of Lagos and Ife.
Oba Ogunwusi, the Ooni Of Ile-Ife, Osun State, erected a statue of princess Moremi in his Palace in 2017. It is the tallest statue in Nigeria and the fourth tallest in Africa.

Meet Sinikiwe Kademunga, the 24 year old Zimbabwean born rock star who lives her life radiating that nothing is impossible in life if you put your mind to it. She was born with no arms, no knees.

Although she grew up with cultural, social and economic barriers, she did not let that ground her.
Sinikiwe is the winner of the 2016 Courage award for the Zimbabwe International Women’s Awards (ZIWA). She is currently completing her degree in Social Work at the University of Cape Town.

Sinikiwe also runs a blog called Life in the shoes of a short girl where she shares her life journey to inspire and mentor other young Africans like herself to be more confident in their own bodies and believe that anything is possible in life despite their physical barriers.
