For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. (Ps. 5:12)
If you are born again, you have been made the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21). God’s favor and blessing flow from the gift of righteousness through Jesus Christ. His blessing is upon His people (Ps. 3:8).
What should this mean? It means you should expect good things, favor, health, joy, peace, and abundance. Yes, persecution exists in this fallen world. It has always existed against God’s people, but that hasn’t stopped God from promising His favor and blessing in the midst of darkness and corruption.

"Anchored"

If you’ve spent any time on a boat in the ocean, you know what it feels like to look up from the water, and suddenly realize you’ve drifted off course.

Without an anchor, there’s nothing to hold you in place.

Likewise, the ever-shifting waves of the world’s opinions can feel just as fluid and unsteady as the sea. When a storm rages, it can feel impossible to discern what’s up from what’s down—much less recognize God’s will.

In his letter to believers in Rome, where cultural trends were just as wobbly as ours are today, the apostle Paul wrote this:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

So how can you renew your mind with the right stuff? How can you test and approve God’s will? Here are a few ideas:

Keep listening. You can know the story of God and understand the heart of God by reading or listening to His Word. You’re more susceptible to lies when you do not know the truth. But when you’re anchored to Truth, lies lose their power.

Keep talking. As honest and raw as possible, keep talking to God throughout your day. Ask Him your hard questions, come to Him with your burdens, and worship Him for His goodness, as well as the goodness you see around you. Communication with your Creator keeps you anchored to your Creator.

Keep learning. You can stay curious while also filtering what kind of information you put into your mind. You can pay attention to what you’re watching, what you’re listening to, and who you’re allowing to speak into your life.

You can resist drifting by anchoring yourself to the Truth—the words that come from God Himself.

"What does God want you to do with your life?"

The only way to know God’s will is by getting to know Him. It’s through drawing near to God that His guidance becomes evident. There isn’t one correct way to do that, but there are steps we can take that will help.

Seek God through Prayer.
Think about a close friend. If you’ve known them for a while, you know what they like and dislike without asking. The closer you are to someone, the more you understand them. The same goes for our relationship with God. Knowing God’s will comes from having honest conversations with Him. That’s why we need to get into the habit of talking to Him regularly, about everything.

Search the Scriptures.
God’s will for your life will never contradict what is written in Scripture. So as you get to know God through prayer, familiarize yourself with His Word. The more you study the Bible, the more your desires will begin to reflect God’s will. And when this happens, you can confidently ask God anything—and He will hear you.

Listen to the Holy Spirit.
Listening for the Holy Spirit often requires silencing the noise around you. When you get rid of distractions and stop fixating on fear, you start to notice God’s peaceful presence in your present circumstances. So as you pray and search the Scriptures, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, and allow God to silence any distractions. (And if you want to practice intentionally seeking the Holy Spirit, try the YouVersion Guided Prayer feature.)

Look for confirmation from wise people.
Consider inviting people who are further ahead in their faith journey to be your “wise counsel.” Ask them to seek God’s will for your life with you. This step must be done alongside the previous ones. Seeking wise advice should confirm what you sense God is already telling you to do—it should not take the place of talking directly to God.

You may not always get it right, but the more you try to understand God’s will, the easier it becomes. When your desires align with God’s desires, He can trust you to do what is right. Applying these steps will help you, but discovering God’s will is a lifelong commitment that requires seeking God every day.

"Can you believe it?"

Zacharias and Elisabeth were righteous people (v. 6) who prayed for a child for many years. They felt the same disappointments and frustrations that any of us would feel and yet they kept believing God. The Lord finally answered their prayers and sent His angel to announce the good news.

What was Zacharias' reaction? He couldn't believe it! The very thing that he had been praying for was granted and he doubted that it was true. In Zacharias' case he received his miracle anyway. Perhaps his wife's faith pulled him through.

Likewise, you may be praying for the right things. You may even be sincere and earnest, but would you be surprised if those prayers were suddenly answered today? Have you made preparations for your prayers to be answered?

Before the children of Israel were actually delivered from Egypt, they ate the passover meal by faith. Their bags were packed and ready to go. We need to anticipate our prayers being answered.

Right now, imagine how you would feel or what you would do if the answer to your prayers was manifested this very minute. Then, as much as possible begin to think and act that way. You'll find out that your whole attitude will change as you focus on your answer instead of the problem.

"The Living Word of God"

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Bible is that it’s just another book.

In fact, many Christians treat Scripture as if it’s just a collection of ancient letters and books that inform us about God and religious matters.

While the Bible is certainly a collection of ancient documents, it is also much more than that. It is the very word of God. The Bible is inspired by God, which means He spoke through humans to create these letters and books.

More than that though, God’s Word is living and active. The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to speak to us even today. This is what makes Scripture distinct from any other book.

James tells us in James 1:22-24 that the power of Scripture doesn’t just come by hearing it, but by living it out.

Scripture has the power to radically change the way we live, but we must take the effort to first read it, and then do what it says.

James says that anyone who reads Scripture and doesn’t follow God’s way is only deceiving themselves. We think we are following God simply by reading His Word, but God desires that we live out the truths of Scripture in our own life.

This is what it means to follow God’s way rather than our own.

Take a moment to consider a few ways you can begin to live out the truths in Scripture. Spend some time in prayer asking God to reveal to you an area of your life to transform by His Word. And then, resolve to not just hear God’s Word, but to do what He says as you follow after Him.

How Can I Help?

Think about the last time someone was kind to you. Kindness is one of the most powerful forces on earth, and serving other people can transform someone’s life for good.

All of us have the ability to do good for someone, and God has gifted each of us with special abilities and talents that can be used to serve other people in our lives. Whether it’s a spiritual gift or a learned skill, you have unique opportunities to show kindness to those in need.

Paul, the writer of the letter to the Galatians, is careful to note that we won’t always have the opportunity to do good for others. We cannot know how many days we have left on earth, and we certainly don’t know how long certain people will be in our lives. That’s why we should use every opportunity to encourage and help others.

Serving and helping others is a form of love. When we take the time to help someone, we allow them to experience Jesus's love through us. Doing good for someone opens the door to conversations about the love that Jesus has for them.

Paul also says that we should help those who are believers. That is because those who are believers are our spiritual family. Just as we ought to care for our relatives, we should also look for opportunities to love those who are part of the Church.

How has God gifted you with talents and abilities to serve others?

Take some time to think about a few people in your life that you can help. Maybe it’s letting someone know you’re thinking of them, or perhaps it’s helping someone with a need they have. In any case, be on the lookout for ways to do good to all people as you go about your day.

Give Him Your Praise

Worship is the act of praising God for who He is and what He has done for us. Throughout Scripture, worship is a central act of the Christian life.

As Christians, we have received so much from God. Through Jesus Christ, we have received salvation and grace. We now have a new life in Christ and are secure for eternity.

Our response back to God for all of these things should be worship. Praising Him for His goodness and mercy and thanking Him for the things He has done.

We often think of worship as singing songs to God. And within this form of worship, we can do things like clap our hands, pray to God, or raise our hands in awe of Him.

But, singing songs is not the only form of worship. We can worship God in every area of our life. We worship God through prayer and gratitude. We can also worship God by being in awe of His creation.

As the writer of Psalm 47 says, shouting out to God and worshiping God comes from the joy within our heart. As we consider the greatness and goodness of God, as well as everything He has given us, we worship Him out of the joy within us.

Consider during this Advent season how you can intentionally worship God. You can begin by thanking Him for His faithfulness and goodness or any of His other attributes. Express your gratitude for the things He has done in your life and the things He’s given you.

"The Lord our Warrior"

There are many different ways we can think about God. He is presented in Scripture as a God of love and mercy. He is also the Creator as well as our Rescuer. God is even spoken of as a Protector and a Warrior. Most importantly, God is the Protector of His people, those who trust in Him.

We don’t always consider God as a warrior, fighting on our behalf through the various trials and battles in life. Maybe you even remember a tough season when it seemed like God was absent or felt distant. Typically, in seasons of difficulty, it is us who draw away from God, not God drawing away from us.

Scripture says that God is our strength and shield. But it also says that we should trust Him, which means we have to believe He is present and working in the background even when we don’t think He is. Psalm 28:7 says that as we trust in Him, He will help us in our need.

In addition to trusting in God during seasons of difficulty, the Psalmist encourages us to find joy in God, not only through trusting Him but also through singing songs of praise and worship. Singing to God, especially in the midst of tough seasons, has the power to turn our hearts and minds toward God because singing to God is actually a way of building trust in God.

Songs remind us of who God is and what He has done for us in the past, so that we can trust Him in the present. All of this builds our trust and produces joy in our lives.

During this Advent season, and time of reflection, consider: Are you trusting God to be your strength and shield, or are you trying to manage life’s difficulties alone? What songs can you think of that can help build your faith and joy in this season? Every season of life provides a new opportunity to trust God as our Protector and praise Him for all He has done for us.

"From Worldly Worries to Spiritual Anticipation"

How much time do you spend thinking about what to eat or worrying about what to wear? Do you obsess over having—or being—enough?

While there’s nothing wrong with meal planning for the weeks ahead or creating an annual budget, Jesus explains that worrying doesn’t help:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus never said not to think about your basic needs. He did say not to worry about them.

God knows what you need before you do. God knows your prayers before you pray them.

Recognizing your physical needs can remind you of your spiritual needs—an invitation to trust your ultimate Provider.

Later in the same chapter, Jesus reminds His disciples that if God provides for the birds and the flowers, He will provide for His people that much more. Then He adds, “but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬)‬‬.

So, let’s seek Him first. During this season of Advent, reflect upon the work entrusted to us while trusting in Him for provision. And let’s not waste another second on worldly worries!

"The Greatest of All"

In his first letter to the believers in the Greek city of Corinth, the Apostle Paul said this:

“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This well-known verse is the conclusion of what’s often referred to as the “love chapter” of the Bible. In it, Paul explained that spiritual gifts (like prophecy or knowledge) are helpful to the Church but simultaneously meaningless without an undercurrent of love.

Faith and hope are at the top of the list, but love is the greatest.

Think about it…

Faith is crucial to Christianity. In fact, “Without faith it is impossible to please God…” (Hebrews 11:16). “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). But one day, faith will give way to sight and what was once foggy will suddenly become clear.

Hope is also essential to those who follow Jesus Christ. And we certainly have a great hope—based on facts, evidence, and witnesses—in the God who created us, gave His life for us, and will return for us once and for all. But one day, the future we hope for will become reality.

And so, Paul says, love is the greatest. Earlier in the chapter (1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4‬-‭8‬), Paul defines love in action.

Faith and hope are important, but love is the greatest of them all.

"Faith and Trust"

A century ago, John Stockton penned a timeless reminder in his song, urging us to "Only trust Him now; He will save you, He will save you now." In a world where trust is often placed in our own resources, skills, and knowledge, embracing Stockton's counsel can be challenging. Yet, the path to a deeper trust in God is illuminated by three simple guidelines.

🔹GUIDELINE 1: Stretch the Muscle of Your Faith
Reflect on the moments when God has answered your prayers. Undoubtedly, there's at least one instance when your heartfelt pleas were met with His provision. As you recall these instances, let them be a source of encouragement, reinforcing the truth that the same faithful God who answered your prayers in the past is ready to provide for your needs today.

🔹GUIDELINE 2: Be Encouraged by the Testimonies of Others
Remember, God shows no favoritism (Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 3:25). To bolster your faith, seek out the stories of those whose prayers have been heard and answered. Their testimonies serve as beacons of hope, guiding us toward a profound trust in the unwavering nature of God's love and care.

🔹GUIDELINE 3: Stand on the Assurance of His Word
In moments of doubt, stand firm on the assurance of God's Word. His promises are a bedrock on which we can confidently place our trust. Explore the Scriptures, and let the timeless truths within them be a constant reminder that God is faithful, and His promises endure through all circumstances.

As we navigate the challenges of today, may we earnestly seek God's guidance and grace, trusting Him more with each passing moment. May our faith be strengthened as we stretch beyond our own understanding, find inspiration in the testimonies of fellow believers, and anchor ourselves in the unshakable promises of His Word.

May God, the source of all trust, guide us to an ever-deepening reliance on Him.

A Prayer of Blessing

This blessing represents an ideal condition for someone who follows God. The first part of the blessing is for protection. Because God is all-powerful, He is our ultimate Protector.

The second part is a prayer for grace from God. For God’s face to shine upon someone is for the favor of God to be on them. But for this to happen, we need to be in relationship with God. We ought to spend time with God each day, learning from Him and receiving His grace through His Spirit.

The last part of the blessing is for God’s face to turn towards us. This means that God is looking out for our good. And there is nothing we can do to earn God’s favor because He gives it freely.

The primary way that God blesses us today is through a relationship with Jesus Christ. When we have faith in Jesus, our future is eternally secure in Him. After we begin a relationship with Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives within us and empowers our new life.

God’s grace, favor, and protection are all available to us.

"Is time passing faster?"

Excerpt from Tom Clark from Life, Hope and Truth

More and more I find it difficult to fathom just how fast time passes!

When I was a boy, it sure seemed like time moved so much slower. The second hand on the clock in my classroom at school seemed like it was trying to move through putty! And the sensation of time being slow was even more acute if there was something I was anticipating.

Summer vacation from school always seemed like it would last a long time. There was going to be plenty of time to do everything. There was always time to play, work, whatever was needed or wanted. No worries about time.

Spend an afternoon fishing or laying on a bale of hay chewing on a grass stem. No rush and no worries, there will always be another tomorrow . . .

Some of you may have heard a song that came out a few years ago by Kenny Chesney called “Don’t Blink.” The song presents an interesting perspective about the passing of time.

The lyrics are about an interview with a man who turned 101 years old. In the song they asked the old man’s advice about the secret to life, and his answer is the chorus, summed up with the title—“don’t blink.”

In the blink of an eye he went from a boy to a young married man, to seeing his children grown, to celebrating 50 years of marriage, to turning 101. The message of the song is that life goes by in the blink of an eye, so use it well.

As a young boy I couldn’t have imagined it, but how very true that seems to be now! I must have blinked, because that boy with a fishing pole is now a grandpa taking his grandsons fishing.

And if time is going by so quickly, that means the future is rushing toward us just as quickly. Are we prepared, or preparing, for what is coming ahead of us?

One of the first scriptures that came to mind as I was writing this is what Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:15-16: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

The Christian is reminded of the need to use the time we have wisely, because time once spent can never be regained and used again.

We need to take advantage of the time we have to make sure we do the most important things. We are warned the time is coming when it will be far more difficult to live our faith, and no one knows how far off those days may be.

The Greek word for “circumspectly” means to walk carefully.

Some of the things we need to treat the most carefully are relationships: our relationship with God and our relationship with family and brethren. Our relationships are all impacted by (and also have an impact on) our personal growth in righteous character.

Do we, as a habit, make sure we do the most important things, like daily prayer, Bible study, meditation and occasional fasting? Do we value one another, and make the sacrifice of time to be with and serve one another as we can? Are we seeking to become spiritually mature in every aspect of our lives?

Or do we tend to put some of those things off for the future? After all, there will always be more time.

When I finish this project or after the kids are a bit older or maybe after I retire I’ll have time to do those things. There will always be another tomorrow . . . meanwhile the time goes by in the blink of an eye.

No matter how young or old you are, now would be a good time to consider how fast time passes by. And consider the biblical instruction to redeem the time we’ve been given.

There will always be more time—until one day there isn’t.

"A Great Reveal"

Without context, 1 Corinthians 2:9 could seem like Paul was referencing heaven. And while it’s true that our human minds have never seen, heard, or imagined the magnitude or magnificence of what God has planned for eternity, Paul’s message had a different point.

Paul was contrasting man’s wisdom with God’s wisdom (1 Corinthians 2:6-8), he clarifies that only the Holy Spirit can reveal God’s mysterious plan. Without the Spirit, we are blind, deaf, and incapable of comprehending His power. Without the Spirit, His wisdom seems foolish to even “the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters” (1 Corinthians 1:20).

It takes the Spirit of God to reveal the mysteries of God.

Only the Holy Spirit can divulge what was previously hidden—what cannot be seen with human eyes, heard with human ears, or imagined with human minds.

And Jesus Christ is the mysterious plan, hope in the flesh, and the long-awaited Messiah who has come to rescue His people, “In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:2-3). And because His Spirit now dwells inside of His people, we can also “have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).

So don’t forget: “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

"People of Peace"

In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul explained that those who had been given new life in Christ not only had a redeemed future but also a new reality.

Instead of being confined to a hopeless world, they had an eternal hope.

Instead of being powerless against sin, they had the power to fight back.

Instead of continuing cycles of chaos, brokenness, and trauma, they could be people of peace.

Paul went on to say in
‭Colossians‬ ‭3:15‬ ‭
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. "

With Christ we can take off our "old self" and put on our "new self" which is continually being made into the image of God.
