The state government has not taken up repair and maintenance of schools that are in a dilapidated condition across the state due to lack of funds. At the same time, financial allocations have been made to build schools and anganwadis, but not maintenance, sources in the government pointed out.

In flood-hit areas, the Public Works, Education and Women and Child Welfare Departments have started the construction of 3,243 schools at a cost of Rs 756 crore and 842 Anganwadis at Rs 138 crore. These structures are at different stages of completion. PWD said that it has completed 2,722 schools and 551 Anganwadi buildings and other projects are nearing completion.

In a first for the state, the Nettukaltheri open prison has launched a culinary programme to help inmates make a career in the food industry. The project — aided by the Family Planning Association of India, an NGO — is meant to provide cooking lessons to interested prisoners so they can earn a living as chefs during parole period or after being released from prison. The programme was inaugurated recently with celebrity chef Suresh Pillai giving lessons to over 50 inmates.

Superintendent B Remeshkumar said the inmates will be given hands-on training in preparing staple Kerala recipes, like porotta and appam, as well as Chinese dishes. The training programme will run for a week and those who perform well will be provided certificates issued by industry leaders.

Experts say a combination of the Delta variant, which was the reason for the second wave, and Omicron could fuel the surge.

A principal of an Urdu primary school has been helping scores of children from poor families with classes at an Eidgaah ground after noticing that online education was beyond the reach of their parents.

Naseem Ahmed of State Urdu Primary School, Khijur Toli near Ranchi has been conducting classes for more than 60 students every day in different batches. Ahmed said that he was moved by the plight of these children as they did not had access to mobile phone or laptops at their homes.

New Covid-19 Variant in France: Known as 'IHU', the B.1.640.2 variant has been reported by researchers at institute IHU Mediterranee Infection in at least 12 cases, and has been linked to travel to African country Cameroon.

However, the researchers noted that it is too early to speculate on how this variant behaves as far as infection and protection from vaccines is concerned.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the Delta variant of coronavirus continues to be the dominant circulating strain in India and Omicron has not replaced it yet, meaning current preventive measures and vaccines would remain effective.

Dr Samiran Panda, additional director-general of the ICMR says that while Omicron numbers may increase, it may not necessarily cause a heavy burden on the healthcare system. However, he requested the states to be on the guard.

Chandigarh-born Harnaaz Sandhu was officially named Miss universe 2021 on December 12 at the Universe dome in Eilat, Israel. The 21-year old beat out 79 other contestants from various countries to win the 70th edition of Miss Universe pageant. The last indian to win miss universe was Lara Dutta, back in 2000.

Harnaaz, a Punjabi model, is currently pursuing her master's degree in public administration. Harnaaz began competing in pageantry as a teenager, winning titles such as Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018. After winning the title of Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, Sandhu competed in Femina Miss India. She had previously won 'Miss Diva Universe 2021' title that paved her way to the Miss Universe 2021 pageant.

The main event will be the inauguration of the phase one of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham constructed at a cost of around Rs 339 crore.

PM Modi will dedicate to people the ambitious Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in the heart of Varanasi after offering prayers at the ancient temple that draws massive number of visitors from India and abroad.

Even till late evening on Sunday, construction workers were busy polishing stones, labourers were occupied decking up the temple premises with flowers, especially marigold, and staff rushing things up at Lalita Ghat to make it ready for the function.

There is a palpable excitement among a majority of the residents of the temple town and domestic tourists flocking the holy shrine of the Hindus in the run-up to the high-profile event, in view of which the police security in Varanasi has been stepped up.

Excitement of the inauguration event, branded as Divya Kashi, Bhavya Kashi’, is such that a Shiv Barat procession was taken out in the streets near Godowlia Chowk, while owners of many hotels in the area have lit up their properties, with one saying, “It is a historic moment for Kashi and we are fortunate to be part of it”.

The farmers protesting against the several related issues, have decided to call off their demonstrations, soon after the Centre agreed to their demands. The farmers protested at the various borders of the national capital since November last year.

The farmers' unions have said the protesters will head back home after vacating Singhu border, the epicentre of the 14-month-long protests, near Delhi on Saturday (December 11) before offering prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on December 13.
