Along the lines of late night posting for this week's show, I've been thinking a lot about how NEO GEO machines were practically everywhere at one point. You basically got four or more games a pop for a cabinet, and definitely filled the halls of my eternal gaming memories (alongside laundromats). Excellent, excellent games, from Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, and, of course, The King of Fighters.

This is obviously my show for tonight, so see you soon for a great SNK infused set on 104.3 WAYO-FM at 10:00 PM!

I'm in the process of migrating all of my video game music and chiptunes to a more compact hard drive so there's not too much to lug around. This move also left me with a chance to reorganize a lot of of the beeps, as I've fallen into a very Folder (2) situation. Whooooops.

That being said, I did whip up a very quick, no frills set tonight. It'll be fun with minimal stakes of whatever beep selection I've put on.

See you tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM as per usual - next week will be waaaay more structured and more on time with the social media posting.

Is that Link? No, that’s Nigel from Landstalker!

Thinking about the sleeper hits and not talked enough fantasy entries of the 90s got me excited for a set. I’ll be playing music from the Lufia, Lunar, Alundra, and other classic series that deserve more air and playtime. Gonna have fun a lot of fun tonight.

See you on Sound Test at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Some games are just flat out cool. Maybe a smidgen transcendental. You think about how a game presents this post apocalyptic world ruined by an ancient civialization by means of excessive bio-engineering, and in turn you get to navigate it on a dragon. Like, that’s just COOL.

Panzer Dragoon and its successors all rule. With a majority of the games acting a rail shooters, they make you feel like you’re literally part of the ride. The whole journey feels wonderful as you skirt past low poly assets painted with a timeless art design.

And the music features beautiful new age compositions of Yosh*taka Azuma and Yayoi Wachi. Even when they veer orchestral, there’s plenty of fantasy involved in their work.

Very excited to feature one of the most iconic Sega Saturn games tonight at 10:00 PM. See you later on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Got a flat tire. Absolutely loathe the unexpected last minute no shows, but I’m not taking the donut for a spin as this wacky weather rolls through. Looks like I’m spending the beginning of this weekend doing what I usually do after the show anyway: staring at screen, playing games until who knows.

Anyway, stay safe / gold during the upcoming storm, and see you next week!

Happy New Year everyone! To shake things up a little bit, I'm playing not only the highlights in gaming over the last year, but personal snippets of games I've checked out that could have come from any generation. I think it'll be fun. This year ruled (as far as video games goes).

See everyone tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Last show of the year and it's Friday Night... Going to just get straight to it with some bangers to close everything out. It's always my favorite thing to do when the year winds down.

See you tonight at 10:00pm on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Realized it’s the holidays, and how I always throw on a Christmas song from NiGHTS into dreams, and then it dawned on me - I’ve never done a set on this beautifully strange game from Sonic Team.

So I’m doing just that. Join me tonight at 10:00pm as we journey with Nights in the wonderful world of Nightopia. It’s such a wonderful game.

See you on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

It’s incredible how Nintendo has both developed and published so many iconic franchises over the years. Obviously, Metroid is included in this, but incredible how a bounty hunter scouring the corners of outer space nestled into the overall IP portfolio. Samus rules. Metroid rules.

And the music rules, too. I cannot imagine this series without the chirps of the item room alongside the iconic fanfare upon collecting an upgrade. The dark, sinister lead melody in Kraid’s Lair. Or even the somber yet foreboding pads accompanying lower Brinstar. And all of Phendrana Drifts - ESPECIALLY all of Phendrana Drifts.

Many notable Nintendo composers lent a hand in composing the series’ music, from house staple Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka to Kenji Yamamoto, who has definitely left an incredible mark on the series.

It’s a night of fantastic Metroid music on Sound Test tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM. See you soon!

Alrighty, the obligatoryhope you all had a wonderful holiday last week” post! With that in mind, it’s the return of Sound Test!

Really feeling the soft, 90s tones of Commodore Amiga and PC tracker music, so that’s the overall vibe for this week’s show. If you dig old school computer / tracker music, or dig super sampled guitars and synths, this is definitely your show this week.

See you tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Thank you all so much for not only reaching our goal a day early last week, but for having our final mark be $19,105 out of a $15,000 goal. Also, huge, wonderful thank yous to everyone who came out last week to our fundraiser party at the Fedder building and stuck around with me for the last two hours of our 2024 drive. I got to play my favorite video games and hang out with some of my favorite people. A true blue dreamy experience.

I’ll be on for a regular hour full of regular beeps and boops at 10:00pm. A standard fare of my signature dweeb self curating all sorts of wacky noises. Doing this another whole year thanks to all of you. You! Thank you!

See you all tonight on 104.3 WAYO-FM.

Welcome to the fantasy zone.

Since it’s the WAYO fundraiser, where I try to really dish out the cream of the crop, I can really acknowledge my personal bias of the beeps.

I believe that the Sega arcade games developed from the 80s and 90s, especially those by Sega AM2, represent the best ex*****on of video game music full stop. It’s the best utilization of Yamaha FM chips, showcases a wide melodic variety, and adds depth to the respective game.

Games like Space Harrier, Galaxy Force II, Fantasy Zone, and Out Run all give me goosebumps. Cream of the crop music.

With that in mind, I’m doing a two hour set of this. While I’m gushing endlessly about these games, you should DONATE on https://donate.wayofm.org

First of all, it’s the kick-off to our yearly donation campaign. Which means you’re clicking on https://donate.wayofm.org to view the sweet donation perks and considering donating. Heck yeah.

Secondly, it’s the closest show to Halloween, which means I can feature one of the most iconic and appropriate PC games of the 2000s!

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodblines drips as much atmosphere as it does blood. Based on the traditional role-playing game, it’s already chock full of incredible world building and lore. What tops it off are the memorable characters, sharp writing, and an extremely spot on soundtrack featuring Ministry and Lacuna Coil. It’s the perfect goth club simulator.

I’ll be on for two hours tonight featuring the score and soundtrack in the first hour, followed by hilarious radio segments in the second half for complete immersion.

See you tonight at 10:00pm on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Tidying things up to kickstart the next three weeks of yearly fun, so I’m throwing together a little retro throwback set. Keeping things in the late 1980s and early 90s. Love me some old school video game beeps.

Like our very own Harry here, I’ve almost hilariously fumbled the ball on ensuring I post that I’m on the air tonight. Perhaps I’ll make a joke about passing an interfacing check. But I love Disco Elysium too much, so I’m doing a set on it tonight.

Hardcore. Hardcore to the mega.

See you tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM.

I can’t believe fall is one week away! Since the weather is going to warm up next weekend, I figured I’d get a comfy autumnal set going now. I’ve been doing too many wacky drum and bass and frantic beeps lately.

Enjoy a nice comfy video game music set tonight featuring Lena Raine, fingerspit, Masafuki Takada, and many others. See you at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Motoi Sakuraba is a prog monster. Sure, he has Dark Souls under his belt, but his main contributions to the Tales, Star Ocean, and Golden Sun series all have songs that seemingly come straight out of a Roger Dean painting.

The music for all these game series are so good, that I couldn’t settle for just one. So this is a set all for the legend himself.

See you tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

Since I recently did a Tetris set, it’s only natural I cover another iconic puzzle series that not only stood the test of time, but also crossed over with Tetris!

Puyo Puyo is a spin off series of a dungeon crawler series called Mado Monogatari, and has stuck around since ‘91. Featuring a slew of characters from the original series, the gameplay feels more like Columns or Dr. Mario. Small, slimey blobs called Puyo fall from the top of the screen, and players must match four or more Puyo together to clear them from the board.

The music is upbeat, frantic, and a delight to hear. Sega has owned the series since 2001, which only positively contributes to the “sonic” landscape of its soundtrack.

Also, Schezo.

Listen up phones! The World Ends With You.

One of the most striking and cohesive works by Square legend Tetsuya Nomura, this game, along with its sequel TWETY: NEO, is a visual and audio delight. They both take place in the Shibuya district in Tokyo, and pits their heroes (and villians) in the midst of the Reaper's Game.

The OG is honestly one of the best Nintendo DS games of all time, and has an absolutely banger of a soundtrack. I've littered songs from this series countless times over the years, so now it's time to get the groove on with a dedicated set.

So buckle up for an amazing set tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM!

11/08/2023

It’s Tetris. I can’t imagine a more ubiquitous title in gaming than this one. The Nintendo GameBoy release still remains one of the best selling games of all time. Practically every video game console, personal computer, or phone can run Tetris. It’s everywhere.

So this is a show about video game music, right? Korobeiniki is commonly know as “that Tetris theme”, originally appearing as Type A’s theme in the GameBoy release. Is that it?

Music and Tetris run surprisingly deep together. The iconic logo used from 1997 to 2019 is designed by Roger Dean, otherwise known for his contributions to progressive rock band Yes. The Philips CD-I version sports an aesthetic, vaporwave soundtrack. The New Tetris covers every popular electronic genre of the 1990s. Tetris Effect is absolutely bonkers with its overall presentation.

There’s a lot of palatable, engaging music that can stand on its own, and it’s exciting to compile this set together. This set pretty much captures the original vision of this show: highlighting how video game music is music in its own right, and found in the strangest places, even in Tetris.

So yeah, come listen to some Tetris music. That’s the big draw of tonight’s Sound Test on 104.3 WAYO-FM. See you at 10:00 PM!

Everyone should know that, in my short break, I saw Barbie not only once but twice. Everyone must know that I am Kenough.

Anyway, Sound Test is back at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM with the variety of wacky video game music you’ve come to expect from someone who is definitely Kenough for radio.

I often tell people, if someone has an interest in platforming and retro design, just play Cave Story. In fact, everyone should play Cave Story. It’s even been the background in my laptop for years now at this point.

It’s incredible how one person made the whole thing. In fact, Pixel rules. He designed the entire software used to make his own music. Then he did exactly that for Cave Story.

So I’m doing a Studio Pixel set tonight on Sound Test. Huzzah! Or, Oh Yeah!, depending on your translation.

We’re a week into the big release of Final Fantasy XVI, and Final Fantasy XIV still draws a massive crowd into its servers. It’s a great time to see all these spoony bards freak out over Square Enix chalking up another Roman numeral - myself included.

I’ve totally covered this series as a whole before, but it’s so HUGE, that more time spent raving about Nobuo Uematsu’s elevating beeps is always appropriate for this show. So it’s another Final Fantasy set.

Watch me suplex an entire train tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM. See you soon!

I’ve been thinking about the buffet style arrangement of platformers in the 1990s. We can basically blame Mario. This goes both for 2D and 3D games. Everywhere you go, you see some little video game character waltzing about in a mascot like fashion.

But within the slop, lies one of the most beautiful, innovative series from the best period of Namco’s output: Klonoa.

This series all about diving into dreams, exploring the whimsical, and resolving the nightmare. There are so many things these games get RIGHT, especially with the music. So much of it is so cheerful and bright, but knows when to scale back to these grand ambient pieces. So perfect.

Super excited to do a WAHOO set tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM. See you soon!

Perhaps Furi is of its time: a neon clad, brutally difficult action hack and slasher with an aggressive synthwave soundtrack. The whole cyber aesthetic ran RAMPANT in the 2010s. It’s not at the forefront right now, but, honestly, Furi still stands tall.

Sporting a synth laden soundtrack by Carpenter Brut, Waveshaper, Danger, and many others, it’s such a delight to listen to on its own. It definitely reminds me of Hotline Miami in regards to the relationship of its score to gameplay (minus the 80s ULTRAVIOLENCE, of course). There’s a ton of four to the floor, digital aggression to practically all tracks, with some saving grace inbetween.

Furi floored me when it came out and I’m excited to play music from it tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM. See you soon!

This show will be WHATEV.

Hylics is perhaps the most visually daring of all the RPG MAKER games. Practically ever art asset is done in claymation, with the backgrounds and effects contributing to this surreal, psychedelic wonderland. It’s bonkers, to say the very least, to see Wayne journey forth to defeat Gibby, King of the Moon.

The music is composed by the game’s developer, Mason Lindroth, with contributions by Chuck Salamone for Hylics 2. Compared to the game, it’s HIGHLY accessible, even a tinge indie bedroom at times. But it definitely dives into the weird to fully cement the game’s surreal atmosphere.

Join me today to fully capture the beauty of this worm petting simulator tonight at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO-FM.

But with a long weekend ahead, perhaps you’ll get back into playing of Tears of the Kingdom? Or another game on your backlog? Either way, you deserve it. See you next week.

Darius is the king of weird SHMUPs. Flying through space shooting nautical machinations, all while trippy, electronic psychedelica blares in the background. It’s all too cool. This series just gets better with age.

It’s also, to me, the crown jewel of Taito’s in-house band Zuntata. Their eclectic mix of genres and soundscapes shapes Darius from a standard fish shooter to a weird masterpiece.

I’ve always wanted to do a Darius set, and I’ve always wanted try a thing called tuna sashimi… Anyway, INCOMING LARGE RADIO SHOW at 10:00 PM on 104.3 WAYO. See you soon!
