What do I do when I'm not camping? I think about camping and I crochet an extra pillow for My SUV! All of the squares were crocheted in 2020.

While camping this week, I was next to a shallow lake area where these little coots (American coot or mud hen) were foraging for food. Interesting to watch.

This week I spent a couple of nights at Walleye Park on Lake Cypress Springs, Texas. It is crappie time, so my goal was to enjoy God's Beauty and to catch some fish. It was a great time!

Greetings fellow campers! My name is Lynda and I love camping in my SUV! When I purchased my Chevy Equinox in 2012, I had spent over a year searching for the perfect long term vehicle. I wanted the ability to use it for everyday use, but also wanted to use it for camping. This car is a perfect fit for me.

What made me start this page?

I've been camping in my car since 2018 and over the years I have researched and learned so much. I think I can help others to get out of the house, and out in nature. I improve every time I go out and I learn from others. I rarely camp over 2 nights locally, but hope to take a long trip one day.

Benefits to camping in an SUV:

- I've had fire ants attack me while camping in a tent (in all fareness I set my tent on them)/not so in SUV
- I love decorating and setting up camp
- I sleep way better than any tent or trailer I've camped in
- I am able to set up/break down quickly (15-30 minutes) and my set up is flexible (maybe sleep in car without tent, maybe put up privy tent)
- I keep my car ready and can be at the campground within an hour of deciding to go (can work around the weather or fish biting)

I will be sharing more about my Equinox in the future.

Happy Camping!

I knew that I wanted a comfy chair for enjoying the outdoors, and love this (5 year old) chair. It takes up a little more room in the car, but once I'm camping it stays outside or in the privy tent.

Why do I like this chair?

- it has a cushion feel, so it is comfortable
- it is big enough for me to fall asleep in (sideways)
- plenty of room for my pups to join me
- I can turn it to block wind (cooler nights especially)
- it is sturdy
- it is easy to fold up

Cons?

- it is a little heavier than many camping chairs
- there is not an attached table (I carry a little table)
- it can be a bit too warm in the summer (lack of air)

My recommendation for a future SUV camper is that she/he take some time and find a comfy chair.

Note: I keep my chair in the car and should have kept it covered (so it would not have faded due to the sun).

I like having a privy tent and may or may not put it up based on circumstances (weather, length of stay, etc.). A few times when it rained, I set my comfy chair in the tent and enjoyed a lovely afternoon reading. I use my car for day getaways as well and leave most everything in my car for quick use.

I am adding pictures of 2 separate privy tents I've owned. These tents both fold up similar to windshield shades and take up little room. The black one was more expensive (around $70), a little bigger, and the floor of the tent was attached to the tent itself. I liked that better but currently have the green one (around $35). It has a separate floor piece. I place these tents close to trees for additional support (tie the tent strings directly to the tree and add a few steaks) or my car. You would be surprised how tough these little tents are.

I have a five gallon bucket that I have with me always (fishing, gathering fire wood, restroom, etc.). I purchased a seat cover for use in the privy tent and it works great.

For sleeping comfort, I purchased a tri-fold 3" mattress. I have a Chevy Equinox and do not have a lot of room, so chose 3" depth. The 25" width turned out to be perfect because it allows me to keep the right passenger seat upright (for items easy to get to from bed area). It also gives me room to keep my cooler in the back.

A great feature: removable and washable cover on the tri-fold mattress.

Measure and be prepared. There are lots of options out there!

One of my favorite additions is dark screens for the windows. You place them over the window and then have the flexibility of having that window open or closed.

You can search for "SUV window screens" (Amazon, etc.) and will come up with lots of options. I purchased the front and back separate. Be sure to verify the car model as there are different sizes.

Between my tent screen and these window coverings, it is very rare I have flies or mosquitoes in the vehicle. They also provide nice privacy.

I have been camping for as long as I can remember and have done so in everything from a tiny tent to a 30+ foot motor home.

In 2018, I purchased a tent for the back of my car, grabbed up my Yorkie, and headed to a lake located an hour from home. (I'm looking for my pictures from that trip)

The pros to this tent:
- super easy to put up, one person
- screen included, works well
- nice privacy
- can park anywhere including smaller areas, parking lots, and getting close to paradise

The cons:
- does not really add much room to interior space

One of the items I take camping with me every time I go is this set of small lights (about the size of a light bulb) that include removable hanging hooks. I place all four of them in different places around my campsite.

- on the outside of my privy tent
- Inside my car on a hook located in back of suv
- near the lake (on tree or bush)
- on the picnic table or place where I need the light

The lights run on 3x 3a batteries and last for a long time. I've used them through about six 2 night
Camping trips so far.

The one thing that would make these better is if they were rechargeable.

As a note: I use them for power outtages at my house as well.
